Who wants to play Guess That Machine-Translated Game Title?

Strange fate in the wind

Pocahontas

I'm really curious about this one. I've heard the Powhatan name means playful or curious one and it would be a long shot for a machine translation to have that language. I would assume it's somehow linking this to the colors of the wind song but that seems odd too? I went back to find releases of the Disney movie and found this listed for her name in Mandarin: 寶嘉康蒂 but don't know what the characters mean and Google Translate just spits "Pocahontas" back out.

That's literally what Fatal Fury's Japanese name means: Garou Densetsu
I learned something new today!

A lot of the Game Gear games (of which there are 99 listed) share titles with games we’ve already seen: Ninja Dragon Sword, Double interceptor, Iron head boy, Youyou white book 1, Real person hit, Warehouse fan, Bean eating elf, and The power of light. I found a bunch of entertaining new ones, but I didn’t feel like there were quite enough to bother splitting this out into multiple posts. (I never owned a Game Gear and it wasn’t a popular system among my friends, but I’ve been having fun with a bunch of these games especially on small emulator handhelds that they’re well designed for.)

Interesting, thank you!

What website would people recommend for looking up character meanings? I know Jisho for Japanese and assume there's something similar for Chinese.

This also gets to be a short one: There are only 31 Neo Geo games included on this system, and pretty much all of them are the European versions of various arcade titles. I particularly love the fact that “Cadillacs and Dinosaurs” is an actual game that features both of those things.

Today’s fun anecdote: When I was in college, we had a Neo-Geo cabinet at my eating club that was supposed to have free credits, but the switch wasn’t flipped and you needed to put quarters in. I spent an afternoon sweet-talking a girl into removing the padlock on the machine, less because I wanted the machine unlocked (though I did) and more because she was really cute and I suspected that letting her show off her lockpicking abilities would make for good flirting.

…She wasn’t interested in me. But we did manage to remove the coin case cover so you could just keep dropping in the same quarter over and over!

And finally, a bunch of arcade games the system groups under FB Alpha. This overlaps with the Neo-Geo collection a bit (I’m guessing there’s an overlap of what the two cores run), but we’ve got a much bigger collection here.

The arcade games are definitely the best to play on the X2, because the wide screen is stuck in “stretched” mode and they generally look better than games made for the aspect ratio of a CRT TV or a classic Game Boy. Also, most of them are the European versions of the games (and therefore in English), as opposed to the Japanese or hacked Chinese versions.

In retrospect, I probably could have been more thorough during this project in looking up the Japanese names of games to see what they could potentially be translating. Not that this would have told us anything about BAZINGA, but it might have shed some light. Ah, well. Hindsight.

And here we are with our very last batch of bizarrely-translated game names, rounding out the last of the arcade selections. There are more NES games that I could go back and pick through (there are actually 2,000 NES roms that came on this, and a decent number of them are repeat games with invincibility hacks or fanhack roms), but I think I’ve done a decent job with this project and I’m running out of steam on it.

I hope you’ve all had fun on this little journey through inexplicable translation. My X2 handheld certainly earned its keep on this (even if I wasn’t also playing some of the games), so you’re also contributing to my handheld emulator addiction feeling worthwhile. Thanks for reading!

I also enjoyed this but I don't know how I feel about encouraging addictions...
