I'm excited for two weeks of "is Soto getting traded". There's talks of Cardinals being in for it which really feels like either clickbait or hopeful thinking. I know Arenado and Goldschmidt were huge trades, but Soto is going to require like, 4 of any orgs top 7 or so prospects. No way they pay for it.

Would love it though, especially if they could figure a way without having to get rid of Walker/Wynn (start with Carlson, choice of two of top three pitching prospects and a top ten position player not walker or wynn is a good start)

just having some fun:

I'd do that, but I tend to not love positionless hitters (which burleson and gorman mostly are for the current cardinals roster)((soto is an exception, that bat transcends position))

also interesting, and would probably be preferable for Cardinals. Corbin's deal is up same time as Soto, so wouldn't be a hindrance to an extension. Corbin isn't that good anymore (why he's negative value) but he gets better with Cardinals defense (ERA of near six, but xERA is slightly lower, and FIP is under 5)

Not sure if I'd expect nationals to accept either of those, though. They'll probably ask for more than rigid trade values considering he's a once in a generation type hitter

I don't really have the heart to dig up the posts, but it suck when your team is both bad and unlikeable. At least Bobby Witt seems to be coming along.

Juan Soto is a Padre.

Nats get 4 of SD's top 5 prospects. Not a bad deal (cardinals could have beat it). Pretty much the biggest trade haul in history tbh.

That's why they had to throw in Josh Bell as a sweetener for taking Soto off their hands. (The Nats got fleeced, but that was going to be true of any Soto trade.)

It's wild to me that we've got the reincarnation of Babe Ruth playing the game right now, and they're both languishing on a bad team, and that I never hear anybody talk about them ever.

San Diego has already committed a lot of money to Machado and Tatis, I wonder if they have what Soto is gonna be looking for or if he's gonna be the biggest free agent ever.

A big value get of that trade value is getting 2.5 years of exclusive negotiation rights. I would assume San Diego makes him the right offer eventually, but the allure of being the most sought over free agent of all time has gotta be there.

Now, do they just become Mike Trout+[pujols/harrison/rendon/upton/other highly paid guy] Angels? They probably save themselves by just being more willing to spend money outside of guys they can advertise than moreno is, but even in a non-cap sport having that much money in a couple of players is scary. Already saw how they had to work deals to get out of luxury tax threshold and Soto is still on arbitration deal.

Also for something funny, in a weird trade for Raisel Iglesias, the most traded player in MLB history has moved again. Congrats to the nomadic Jesse Chavez.

Ohtani basically gave my team the finger to go play for the Angels, so I'm not too broken up about him gathering dust in L.A.

I'm not a huge baseball guy, if I have a team it's only because my uncle loved them so much that he imparted some of that love to me. He followed the team even after they left Brooklyn. Last night Vin Scully died. He was the voice of the Dodgers from 1950 to 2016 when he retired. As, I said I'm not a huge fan but his voice was always instantly recognizable. What a huge loss for the Dodgers, and for Baseball, really.

I find it grimly hilarious that Whit Merrifield got traded to the Jay's, weeks after missing a series in Toronto because he would not get vaccinated. I guess he finished doing his own research.

I might live in a bubble, but I don't think I've seen an athlete torpedo his popularity faster. From fan favorite to guy everyone hates because he literally said he didn't mind missing games because the team sucks.

Still no clear word on if Merrifield has actually gotten vaccinated. Everybody's being very coy about it. Very much hoping that he does, otherwise this feels like managerial malpractice on the part of the Blue Jays.

I cannot believe the Brewers traded Hader to the Padres with a year and a half left on his contract. The Padres are really going for a World Series, like... this year.

They're voting on three bad new rules tomorrow, and I hope none pass, but I worry all three will.

Pitch clock (batters take more time than most pitchers)
Banning the shift (I just generally think outlawing a workable defensive strategy that doesn't out-and-out exploit a loophole in the rules sucks)
Larger bases (I don't even really get this one, I guess it's ostensibly to prevent players from jamming their fingers or twisting ankles on the bases themselves, but I don't really see how a bigger base fixes that)

both are required to be ready by the end of the pitch clock. if a batter takes too long then it's an auto strike.

almost every article i've read about the trials in the minors have been extremely positive

Pitch clock I'm 100% in favour of. Pace of play is a huge issue in the game and the effects in the minors were extremely positive, as long as enforcement remains in place. Almost every player in the majors has played with a clock at some point in the minors too, so I don't even think it will be much of an adjustment.

Bigger bases is primarily to increase the running game and reduce injury. I'm skeptical it will have much effect, but it's pretty harmless. If you had asked me before yesterday how big the bases are currently, I wouldn't have been able to tell you. I think it's also for safety, to reduce the chance of players stepping on each other during force plays.

They've also proposed a limit of two step offs - including pickoff attempts - per plate appeance, again to increase pace and the running game. I worry this will have unintended consequences but I'm interested in seeing it play out.

The banning the shift thing is the most controversial, obviously. I'm generally against it for the same reason a Shakewell, and don't think it's going to have a huge effect because it's debatable how effective the shift actually is in many cases. That said, I'm not up in arms as long as they can do it in an unobtrusive play. But I do worry that we are going to get a ton of replay reviews to see if an infielder was a quarter inch onto the outfield grass.

If they want to decrease injuries around the bases they probably shouldn't be implementing changes that will increase stolen base attempts.

Having lived pretty much exclusively in cities with minor-league teams at most (the closest I've come to regular access to MLB games was living in Morgantown, WV, which was about an hour out from Pittsburgh, but in the 2000s so who would even bother) I've seen the way that the pitch clock improves game pace and I think it's a good thing for the game.

my only real concern with pitch clock was if it'd increase injuries. Doesn't seem like that has happened at all though. No league saw increases to injuries from it, and players seemed to like that quicker games inevitably led to more rest/recovery (probably extremely minor affect, but good nonetheless).

I think banning the shift is a solution in search of a problem, but the way the rule is written is fine with me. In general i think position restrictions are alright (can't think of that many throughout sports though. Football's line of scrimmage rules is about it). I think the real worry is that it limits the value of slap hitters, but it seems unlikely that we'll see that have any consequence for a while, and there are more impactful ways to address three true outcome baseball

It's definitely a bandaid on the sucking chest wound that is the increasing difficulty of hitting a pitch thrown by an MLB pitcher.

Hopefully the pitch clock means pitchers can't throw max effort anymore and that helps the offensive environment as well.
