September 2022 New Games Thread

Violentvixen

(She/Her)
A thread for examining the new games of September! Share your personal picks, interesting curios, and not quite there possibles...

Did you discover some small game that not everyone knows about?
Share that and let us know what it is about!

Already know a thing or two that interests you?
Make a list of your interests and/or possibles!

Don't know what's so great about an upcoming game you keep hearing about?
Ask here!

Don't follow gaming news that closely and just want to passively see what BigGames™ people care about?
This is the place!

~

Thread concept:
The basic idea is to list new games that you are interested in, as well as games you are potentially curious about or want to give wider attention to. You can briefly describe them or ask other people to help fill you in. The hope is that regular threads like these can act as a collective filter/discovery mechanism to help people decide what is worth checking out.

"New games" means any new title that is being released or ported this month in any capacity (not "backlogs/what you are playing this month"). The angle here is sharing your anticipation and promoting game discovery (as opposed to sharing comments about a first playthrough in progress - that belongs elsewhere).
  • If you want a handy list that covers most of the major upcoming games of the month, here's a few text lists of upcoming games:
  • Here are the subscription service lists for September:

  • Feel free to post other lists or list videos that you find useful.
  • If there is already a thread on TT about a game, please add a link to it.
  • Final request: If you are the first person to mention a game please provide (at minimum) a short sentence description. (If it is a very big AAA release though, then don't worry about it.) This is a good convention that makes the thread more useful as a discovery mechanism, and especially helps out anyone who doesn't follow the news as closely as you.

Splatoon 3 on September 9th. Played the beta last week and had fun and very much looking forward to it, here's the main thread and the multiplayer one.

I played the demo of Kaichu, the Kaiju dating sim during some steam festival thing and it's super goofy and I loved it. Express your love by smashing buildings together! Comes out on the 7th.

Another "I liked the demo" one is Monorail Stories but I'm less sure I'll buy that this month. Comes out on the 26th.

I'm intrigued by the Dreamlight Valley thing. Disney Animal Crossing is at least worth a look if it's free on Gamepass.

Going to keep an eye on Freedom Planet 2 which comes out on the 13th. The first one looked like something I was going to love on paper but the levels were just way too long and it never clicked for me. I'd be curious to try again though.

Shovel Knight: Dig is Steamworld Dig, Downwell and Shovel Knight mushed together

Anno Mutantium is a super cool looking cyberpunk adventure/platformer that is also a baffling array of animes.

Also Splatoon 3 is a gimme

Valkyrie Elysium brings back the long-gone Valkyrie Profile series in an action game form; maybe the general label of "action RPG" is also fitting but the game's general bearing reminds one of Bayonetta as much as anything, so it might be leaning in that direction over the more number-crunchy aspects. The series always had in its presentation an inclination to be more of a chaotic melee than most turn-based affairs, so this extrapolation of it feels natural to me. I'm happy that it seems in keeping with the traditions of the series in deathly melodrama, while having the opportunity to occupy a sort of action game niche of relatively modest means that doesn't happen too much these days, as if its return is also keeping it a couple of industry generations adrift from modern trends. I'm interested to see whether it fumbles or sticks the landing, but conceptually there's a lot to grab onto.

The game releases on PlayStation platforms at the end of September, with a PC release set for November; also curious if the performance is okay enough on a base PS4, as I sure don't have a PS5. An additional carrot might be that the PlayStation releases also include (in their higher-price special editions) an emulated version of the PSP release of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. Don't take it for a modern Square Enix remaster as it appears to be just a direct port running on Sony's proprietary PSP emulator, explaining its exclusivity to those platforms. It's still very appealing to have been dug up for a barebones resurrection, as Lenneth quickly became infamously rare and expensive for its original PS1 release, and then repeated the same fate with its PSP port which did not get a digital release until now to make it more widely available.

I'm thinking of picking up White Day: a Labyrinth Named School for PS5. White Day has been out previously for other systems. Its a survival horror game set in a school. My understanding is that you avoid enemies instead of fight them. As October gets closer, I'm in the mood for horror games.

Splatoon 3 and TMNT Shredders Revenge (physical) will likely be it for me this month.

Actually Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth has been available on mobile devices for over four years now. With controller support, even.

I meant the PSP port, literally. They did some additional work on the mobile version like non-digitized character portraits that make it distinct to me, as well as generally being for pretty different audiences from the console/handheld skew. As far as I know, Lenneth was one of the several Square Enix PSP games that was totally ignored for digital distribution on Sony handhelds after its physical release, which made it especially unobtainable in the years when Vita was current and of course could not do anything with second-hand UMDs. If Crisis Core can get a new lease on life thanks to its glitzy remake, I'm happy that Valkyrie Profile is another PSP alumnus recipient to its own straightforward unearthing, given the circumstances.

I'll be picking up The Last of Us Part 1. I borrowed the PS3 version several years ago but only put about two hours into it, so I'll be looking forward to finally seeing what everyone else has been talking about for a decade now.

Valkyrie Elysium has piqued my interest but I did not play the other games in the series and I'm not very good at action games, so I'll wait for some impressions.

Splatoon 3 is the big one for me followed by The DioField Chronicle which is a new RTS game by Square Enix. There is also the retail version of Bayonetta for the Switch releasing towards the end of the month as well.

Wait what

Ooh. Also minimal/no cleavage on the female characters?! And a free demo?! How on earth did I totally miss this, thanks!

Someone needs to let the guy at 1:19 in the trailer know that facial hair is hilarious though.

Jack Move, a very slick looking cyberpunk JRPG, comes out next week. It has a a demo on Steam as well, which is how I came across it earlier this year.

Oh yeah, that too For me.

Also, the third Voice of Cards game, The Beasts of Burden was just announced and it’s out in a couple of weeks; they’re really solid, stripped down RPGs

I was briefly excited for a video game based on the Evan Dorkin/Jill Thompson funny animals vs. unspeakable horrors comic of the same name.

Splatoon 3 obviously, but ninja toitles and shovel knight both look like likely pickups, at least eventually.

Man, they're releasing these fast, huh? I'm still waiting for the first one to go on sale!

How long are they?

I thought it was weird nobody was mentioning this. I would have normally preordered this one but I really doubt I'll have the time to play any games very much for the foreseeable future, so it woulda been more prudent to wait a bit and see how my schedule shakes out before throwing money at places I probably don't need to be.

Yeah, I'm unlikely to buy a big game like this right away both time and money-wise since but am definitely checking out the demo to decide if it goes on the wishlist or not.

Oh hey, Fuga: Melodies of Steel was just added to Gamepass! I've had that on my Steam wishlist since someone mentioned it here last year I think? Downloading that now.

Also this makes me wonder what else has been added. Maybe it's harder to track what's coming to Gamepass than I thought, hmm.

I'm honestly surprised I have not seen one single "but it was me, Diofield"!" joke on Talking Time, of all places.

The official English release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is out this month, the 27th I believe. The first half of the duology that follows Trails in the Sky and precedes Trails of Cold Steel. PC and Switch versions are shiny new ports that get some minor asset cleanup and quality of life niceties, PS4 version's a localization of the release Zero no Kiseki Kai so missing these changes. Still, either version's bound to be good if you enjoy very very long winded JRPGs and have an investment in the broader Trails series. Once Trails to Azure releases next year it'll finally be possible to play from Sky to Cold Steel in the intended sequence.

Anyone have any impressions of Return to Monkey Island for Switch yet? Mostly looking for feedback on the interface and performance.
