R.I.P. David Warner

Johnny Unusual

(He/Him)
British actor David Warner is dead, having passed from cancer.

Warner is one of those actors who clearly will say yes to, if not ANYTHING, than many things. He's certainly been in some bad movies. But he's also... just always been around to me. I first remember him in Terry Gilliam's bizarre darkly comedic fantasy adventure Time Bandits where he plays evil incarnate.

He was also Sark and MCP in Tron.

Primarily, though, I knew him from TV, playing Ra's al Ghul in Batman the Animated Series

The Archmage in Gargoyles, The Lobe in Freakazoid!

And mocked for his dual role as mentor to hero and villain on MST3k in the movie Quest of the Delta Knights.

Boy was Warner always around. And he did seem invested even in a bad movie or show.

did i do all of that?

I knew him from various Doctor Who projects, mostly Big Finish audios, though he was in the tv episode Cold War, overall a mediocre episode, but an outright oasis of quality in an otherwise dogshit season (and he was probably my favorite part of it). RIP.

Literally the first actor I thought "this guy is great and I should pay attention to what he does," when I recognized him in both TMNT and Time Bandits. One of the all-time great voices, and subject of possibly horror's most legendary decapitation scene (in The Omen). RIP, really bummed about this.

Sad to hear. When making my list for the Top 50 actors I was surprised but delighted that I placed him at #3 on my list. And yes it does seem that he has always been around and been in just about everything. He was in two Star Trek movies and an episode of TNG. He was also in an episode of Tales from the Crypt and was the voice of "evil Gaia" in Captain Planet.

Aw, maaaaaan! I liked this guy's body of work. Hey, if you want to see something really cool that he did, watch Time After Time. It's about HG Wells coming to the far-flung future of... uh, 1979, to capture Jack the Ripper. Wells is played by Malcolm McDowell, and Warner is Jack the Ripper. They had great chemistry, as two threatening British men with voices like sharpened axe blades. Come to think of it, I think they worked together one more time in the Batman Animated Series episode Showdown, with Warner playing R'as Al Ghul and McDowell as his sadistic son.

I guess in light of this news, I should watch the episodes of Gargoyles with the Arch-Mage, as that was also one of Warner's roles. It's pretty great listening to the future Arch-Mage snap at himself in the Avalon story arc. "If you don't know, don't guess!"

They get some excellent scenes together.

I love that their montage of pervasive modern-day violence includes a football game (I mean yes but it’s not like rough contact sports are especially new) and... a rock concert.

Warner did an excellent portrayal of Sark in TRON: A character that wants to be a powerful and intimidating leader, but often betrays uncertainty and even fear as the stooge to a near-divine monster fighting against a god and a demigod, realizing that he's clearly in way above his head. Warner's acting is especially memorable when barely supressed anger is accentuated by Sark's circuitry glowing brighter.

"Take him!"
And lest we forget, in the same movie he also plays the slimy corporate manager Dillinger, who also after a while realizes that he's in over his head. AND he does the voice of the Master Control Program, meaning that there are many scenes where he's acting against himself.

The Guardian wrote a memorial for him, but used the term "equine handsomeness" to describe his appearance, which is probably not so flattering unless you're a devoted horse enthusiast.

Close your eyes and think of the hottest horse you've ever seen. That's how handsome David Warner was.

I knew him best as Jon Irenicus from Baldur’s Gate II, which was another delightful scenery-chewing villain role. May he rest in peace.

Some Key Roles for me:
THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS
Chancellor Gorkon
oh and the decap victim in The Omen

Also he was very nearly Freddy Krueger. They even did a makeup test

Warner rules.

I don't think I was truly aware of him until I watched TRON. I mean, I also knew him as the scientist sidekick in TMNT II: Secret of the Ooze, but... anyway, he's great. Just watched Star Trek V a few weeks ago too.

Warner was great. Always brought his best to every role and played some pretty chilling villains. Gul Madred is easily the most frightening character in TNG. He only knew he was playing Madred three days beforehand, too.

And he had to use cue cards during the performance. Would never have known that if someone hadn't told me.

I get little shivers every time I have to quote him to someone: "I don't understand how you can be so wrong." (Chain of Command)
Also had a part in the rough first season of Babylon 5 as the grail-seeker.
