Square Deal: Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, et al to be sold to a Swedish company

I guess the Marvel games are the reason that Eidos is getting sold off. It never really seemed like Square Enix knew what it wanted to do with Eidos anyway, and that for better or worse they were just trudging along as if the two sides were completely separate companies.

By the way, if you were wondering what "Embracer AB" was, that's the new corporate name of T*HQ-Nordic. I was confused too.

The more I think about it, the more I think The Avengers and GotG flopping the way they did really is the key factor here, considering how important Square Enix being in good graces with Disney is what with Kingdom Hearts. In addition to the financial burden recently Eidos is shitting the corporate relations bed.

Everything I've read says that the GotG game is really good. Shame it didn't sell yell.

I don't know how much interest Im going to be able to keep in SE if they start doubling down on crypto bullshit.

No doubt about it. Square Enix wants to keep on Disney's good side, and two Marvel games flopping at market doesn't look good on them.

It's likely that SE feels that they don't need Eidos anymore, especially not with their highly successful salvaged MMORPG and how they can make cash off of various gachas and remaking and remastering RPGs from two to three decades ago. Tomb Raider and Deus Ex haven't seen a new entry in years, Just Cause 4 was a flop, Hitman was wholly bought up by IO Interactive...Guardians of the Galaxy was likely their last chance and being allegedly good didn't result in sales.

At the very least they still see value in more traditional games...but yeah I'm not thrilled about this either. I'm not surprised the company with dozens of gachas under its belt would be into NFTs and shit, just disappointed.

Chocobo GP should've been a home run but they had to throw GAS rubbish all into it.

So where is Life is Strange falling after this? I didn't see it on the list, but that didn't look to be everything either.

"Square selling Eidos to THQN so that they can focus on NFTs" is a big ol' story with no good side

And also this just makes it even less likely that we'll ever see that Walt Disney World Quest: Magical Racing Tour HD Remaster

Apparently this news means that now the rights to Gex and Duke Nukem are held by the same company, which is a thought too cursed for mankind to handle.

Didn’t those guys get up to some pretty fascist stuff not too long ago? Or am I just confused?

A couple of their execs did an AMA on 8-Chan, and seemed a little too comfortable with the racist memes on display, if that is what you are thinking of. Not on the level of rampant sexual abuse or being owned by a despotic monarch, but definitely eyebrow raising.

That was poor form for sure. But what bugs me as a Generation X gamer who doesn't easily let go of grudges is that Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, and Legacy of Kain will soon be owned by the people who gave you the shittiest video games you ever owned in the early 1990s. "The fate of Raziel is now in the hands of the makers of the Game Boy version of Race Drivin'? Ooh, sign me up! Seeing endless possibilities here!"

Sounds like Square-Enix is keeping their indie game collective, which is funny because part of the pitch of it was giving indie devs access to their Eidos/Crystal Dynamics IP back catalog.

I mean, they could let indie devs use their Square/Enix back catalog. It's not like they are making any new Chrono or Terranigma sequels. Hell, I'd take a new Evermore game.

THQ Nordiq doesn't actually have anything to do with the old THQ, I'm pretty sure. They just bought the trademark and IP.

(grumbles) I know, I know. Jack Friedman left the company years before its bankruptcy, because he was more interested in the licensing aspect of video games than the actual "making video games" part. (Fun fact! Jack Friedman was also CEO of LJN, which is why those games kind of stunk too.)

Nevertheless, when I see the T*HQ logo, I don't see that as a mark of quality. They earned a reputation as a publisher of crap games, and it's odd that someone would willingly cling to that brand given its dubious past. (Plus, I did mention that thing about holding grudges, right?)

Are they using Embracer on their games now? I heard it was their corporate name but I didn't know it was being used on their box art. Due credit for them making a clean start, I guess, even if it sounds like an aftershave.

By the way, the NFT crash news is so good I could pour it into a champagne flute and sip it for the next ten minutes.

Considering the press release mentioned crypto as part of a word salad including other gaming investment buzzwords like THE CLOUD, I'm not sure we should take the idea that Square Enix sold Eidos specifically to fund Blockchain games too seriously, as opposed to this being PR and more polite than saying they are divesting themselves of a studio that has become a major long term burden, and packaging their IPs with the sale was the only way to get other publishers to bite.

Looks like Square Enix lost a combined $200,000,000 on their Marvel games. That's...a lot of money and I can hardly blame them for wanting to be done with the studios responsible.

That said, I'm actually OK to see Eidos et al out from Square's banner. They've constantly dumped on the non-Japanese developers in their company and maybe everyone will be better off parting ways.

That's a genuine shame, Guardians of the Galaxy is very good. Hopefully can continue at Embracer (I hate that name btw). I'm guessing most of that loss was from Avengers. Guess it makes sense why they sold the bundle for what seems like relatively little.

They're still shoveling their money into the garbage, though, if they're investing in NFTs just as the market collapses.

I would make Animal Crossing images for this to celebrate but I already did over the months.
