I will play this, but I prefer my FF to have sci-fi elements. This looks to be strictly fantasy which is fine, but its not my preferred FF setting.

I hope that there are more ladies than this trailer indicates, but it feels good to go medieval again!!

Up and down. I like the resume of the director, don't think XIV is particularly special, don't much care for the atmosphere or world design of the trailer, interested but... not as much as for XV or VIIR. Didn't pop for me as a first impression, especially the gritty bits, but I'm sure whatever releases will be an interesting game, just not sure how much I'll like it.

I'm not the biggest Final Fantasy fan so possibly the trailer isn't for me, but it makes me sad that we've lost a turn based series to action. I'll continue to sit this generation out, I guess

It looks... bad. I mean, the graphics look FINE i guess, it's just... I dunno. I think Peklo's post in the general FF thread pretty much mirrors my exact reaction:

Joyless "prestige" violence with women existing in extremely ancillary male-propping roles, if at all. Fool me once, I guess.

I'm sure it will be a decent enough game, just not one I'd be interested in playing unless the final product diverts a lot from what was shown in the trailer.

Status: cautiously pessimistic. As many of you have said, the series has gone in a direction that no longer caters to my interests. FFXV was good, and I'm sure XVI will be good, but they're not what I wanted.

The more I think about this trailer, the more unsure I am. I just don't really want grittiness in my Final Fantasy games, you know?

Serves me right for trying to keep an open mind about a trailer I wasn't thrilled with I guess.

I posted some negativity in the other thread, so I just want to say I’m not intending to come down anybody being cautiously optimistic here, especially since we don’t know much about the game. The tone of the trailer just didn’t hit with me was all.

I'm tentatively onboard because I don't really trust a trailer like this to be at all representative of the game as a whole.

I'm optimistic because it looks like the combat doesn't feel like terrible sludge this time (I really really really didn't like playing XV, okay?).

Core dev management appears to be mostly poached from XIV, which makes sense on a couple levels, as they're the only team at S-E currently capable of delivering quality product mostly on schedule. They also apparently hired the guy behind Devil May Cry's combat systems to do XVI's, fwiw.

what theyve shown of characters it seems like widely old achool in both good and awful ways, but id be intrigued if it meant job system (which is probably less convincing and exciting with the action style)

This trailer left me pretty cold. When I first saw the dour dudes sitting around the fire I was like "what kind of jank is this," because the character models felt kind of off, and they didn't really look next-gen at all. But then there were chocobos and then the song, and then I spent the rest of the trailer trying to convince myself it wasn't XVI, just an oddity like Type-0 or something.

I don't mind a more medieval fantasy setting, because they haven't really done that in a while. But to my eye, the combat right now looks a lot like XV, which I found to be pretty lackluster, especially in comparison to VII Remake.

That this is a terrible trailer really doesn't help at all. I didn't find it exciting. It leaned a lot on recognition, "Look, it's Shiva, and chocobos, and the song, and a marlboro, get excited for Final Fantasy."

If they make it more like VII Remake, with a swappable party of characters that have different combat styles, then I'll be interested.

The contemporary FF style is just so... bland looking. Like, something about the way the characters are rendered specifically.

My first impression is that it looks like they're trying to cater to the crowd that's into stuff like Game of Thrones with this one. We're back to (non-MMO) medieval fantasy with this latest installment, but this is darker and grittier.

Personally I wish they would go in the opposite direction and do something more like FFIX again instead of turning Final Fantasy into The Witcher or whatever.

did i do all of that?

Which is why I'm paying attention to this at all after XV - the XIV people know what the fuck they're doing (as you well know, MB lol).

I'm onboard until I'm given a reason not to be. And intentionally vague, rough-edged teaser trailers several years out from actual release is definitely not a reason to be in my book.

That's what I can't get over. This trailer is so rough, and obviously rushed, they might as well have done a brief cinematic thing to get people excited, and instead they did this and it's ... meh.

That combat engine looked more refined to me than a game "several years out" would look. Doesn't mean it still won't take a couple years for it to release. But I really don't see a level of roughness in that trailer that others have expressed.

I have a prediction about how the story is gonna go: everything they showed is part of a Prologue of sorts and the actual meat of the story is gonna happen after a time skip where the main character is possibly that kid.

I'd guess that Sony insisted on something with actual in-game stuff behind it, even if it's super early (I did notice the "this is actually running on a PC" notice at the beginning). They needed something to hype up the reveal I guess, especially given the way the Halo Infinite reveal was a wet fart for MS.

Did they even show enough to demonstrate it's anything other than a concept at this point yet? It's not that it looked rough, it's just that it didn't convincingly look like a combat engine. It could be and maybe it is, but it could also be a few seconds of attack animations spread out to show the feeling they're going for.

It's not as blatant as say the FFXIII reveal trailer, but but I don't think we have any reason to believe that a working combat engine necessarily exists. We also don't have a reason to believe that it necessarily doesn't exist, to be clear. I'm just saying that if it does exist, it wasn't on display in that trailer, so it's impossible to evaluate if it's rough or refined or whether or not it's several years out.

That is a very Final Fantasy trailer. Since the last decade has killed any expectation I had that we would ever see a turn based game again, I'm on board.

FF7R proved to me that square enix can still make a fun-to-play final fantasy game, while FFXIV proved to me they can write a really compelling narrative. I'm all aboard the motherfuckin hype train for this shit. Toot toot yall, let's go
