the next next gen: talking about the ninth generation of videogame consoles

the DualShock 4 really hit a sweet spot for me personally
Same. The touchpad is basically just a big extra button or two most of the time, but it’s a comfortable controller and it basically does what you want. The headphone port is brilliant.

My only complaint is that you can’t turn the light off. It would be nice to get a bit of extra battery power.

Yeah, turning mine down to Dim was one of the first things I did. I also turn off vibration in every game I play, if the option is available.

Oh yes, I can't stand controller vibration. I love Limbo lots but I view the fact that there is no way to turn off vibration as an attack on me, personally.

Remember that for every one who holds the correct opinion that the GC controller had the best shape ever, there's somebody who prefers the Dreamcast controller and it's "power cord in the front" approach.

No one thinks the Dreamcast controller is actually good.

I have big hands but for whatever reason, the Xbox line of controllers has always felt too bulky for me personally - I referred to the original Xbox controller as "like a canned ham, but with buttons on it".

Same here. I can palm a basketball, but I despise the Duke.

I have waited till Sony releases the slim version of their console for the last two generations. I will probably keep that plan with this new generation. Unless the new Final Fantasy*, Resident Evil, or Silent Hill** games tip my hand.

*I assume a new Final Fantasy is being worked on.
**Rumor mills are hinting at new Silent Hill game(s).

No one thinks the Dreamcast controller is actually good.

It's mystifyingly bad. Sega did 3 consecutive controllers in a row that were much, much better. Sharpest D pad ever too. Playing Street Fighter 3 on that thing felt like you were paying penitence for doing something awful

Weird. I never had any issues with the d-pad on the Dreamcast. Played a ton of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on it. Now the analog stick, that was the dicey part of the equation for me.

As for this next generation, Sony had better match or beat the Series X. I think Microsoft may have actually gotten it right this generation from a hardware perspective - I'm even intrigued by the Series S, which sounds ideal for folks that want to jump into next-gen gaming but don't even have TVs that can take advantage of 4K. I do have a 4K set... but I'm honestly not sure I care to run at that resolution. I'd much rather prioritize frame rate.

DS4 is a banger of a controller. I've been playing FF7 on my PS3 lately and the step back from the DS4 is really unpleasant. I'm a bit worried about the PS5 controller, but Sony has my confidence in their ability to iteratively improve controllers.

Regarding the smaller storage space discussion from a couple pages ago, it is my understanding that because studios will know that the devices will have SSDs, they can optimize installs for space instead of speed and save some GBs on installs. Since HDDs have to deal with seek time, often game installs will cluster data together that loads in game together to reduce that seek delay. This means that certain data may appear many times in an install. Those extra copies can be eliminated because there is no seek time to read disparate data on a SSD. How much space that saves on a practical level is probably up for debate, but on a theoretical level less storage space should go further.

It's kind of hard for me to muster any enthusiasm for the upcoming next-gen hardware; which is strange since even though I never jumped on the PS4/Xbox One wagon I still remember being very excited about their releases. My interest in gaming hasn't waned since I'm still very excited for games like No More Heroes 3 and Bravely Default 2 so I'll just chalk it up to my preferences solidifying more towards portable gaming.

I am going watching the PS5 Showcase and hope to see some great announcements, but for the time being the next-gen feels very lackluster to me which is disappointing since I do want to be excited for these systems.

I believe the PS5 will probably support almost all PS4 games in BC, but it's a huge bummer to me that they aren't pushing for PS1/2/3 support. I never bought a PS4 but I almost certainly would have if they had added in PSX compatibility - I have like 30 PSOne Classics that I bought from PSN! I know not everyone cares about legacy game support but I think it sucks that Sony (and Nintendo to a certain extent) is so disinterested in their own history.
When people get used to games taking full advantage of the new super fast loading, they may want old games remade to take advantage of it but not many will want to play the actual oldies anymore.

I don't need them to remake Einhander with faster load times, I just want to be able to play it again.

My guess is that PS3 would be pretty tricky to pull off given its architecture, but PS2 and PS1 should absolutely be doable. My understanding is that PCSX2 has come a long way, and with Sony's internal know-how, they should be able to nail it on an x64 architecture.

Regarding load times, it would certainly be nice to improve them, but yeah, most people probably won't play said old games much. I don't think most gamers are quite as retro-focused as a lot of us here. I do find, though, that I tend to ignore the immediately prior generation for a while, then when the next one comes out, I come back to it. My PS2 got very little play for some time, but it has come back into the rotation now, for instance.

PS2 games are available for emulation on PS4 already. Presumably you can play them on PS5, you just can’t play PS2 discs. As to why they’ve seemingly discontinued their PS1 emulation, I don’t know.
True, but I have to think they're doing a more specific port job in those cases, as opposed to a general-purpose emulator that would work with almost all the PS2 library. I could be wrong, though - not like I've seen the source code or anything, haha!

I wouldn’t be surprised if it is just general emulation. I had an old desktop somewhere between PS3 and PS4 in terms of power, and it was able to run PCSX2 pretty well. Granted, there may be some edge cases the base PS4 wasn’t up to snuff with. I know the God of War games tend to be difficult to emulate for instance.

Ah, got my wires crossed a bit. Yeah, PS2 wouldn't be surprising as a general purpose emulator given the state of homebrew emulation and the power of the PS4. PS3 is the one where I think ports might be more specific in nature.

No one thinks the Dreamcast controller is actually good.

I'll give it this much: hell of a joystick (love the grooves for cardinal directions) but, yeah, an odd shape overall. Love the kinds of design choices available by way of that VMU screen, but the original XBox did a much better job of fitting those sorts of ports in.

FFXVI: Oops No Women (Again)

What even is this series anymore.

(Maybe the trailer is just misleading but this is not how I would want to create a first impression for the followup to FFXV. I was an apologist for FFXV having a bros road trip story under the assumption that it was a one-off, but...)

As I recall that book sold like maybe 600 copies over several months, then when they realized they were taking a bath the publisher said "oh yeah actually this is JK Rowling" and then people apparently bought it. I'm convinced that nobody who bought it during that ~hype reveal~ actually read it either way.

Disappointed at the $100 gap, and yet not surprised. This (and if the Series S is successful) is just going to fuel the downfall of physical media even more quickly. And that bums me out.
