Default Ratchet scrolling wall of doom! Let's Play Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics

It was only a matter of time...First, a quick FAQ.

What is Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics?

One Way Heroics was an indie game created by a Japanese dev who goes by the alias SmokingWOLF. It's a ratchet-scrolling roguelike where you go across the world to try and stop an advancing wall of darkness that's destroying everything in its path. Spike ChunSoft approached SmokingWOLF with the initial intent of porting his game to consoles, but eventually decided to make their own version with his blessing instead. This LP is for that game.

So what's different about Mystery Chronicle over regular One Way Heroics?

Well for one thing there's a lot more classes, allies, and quests available. And the wall of murderous darkness is now a wall of murderous light called the Shine Raid. And there's traps now. And it's arguably not as balanced as the original, though I wouldn't know from experience. I welcome commentary from anyone who's played the original One Way Heroics.

Are you going to play the original One Way Heroics?

I will when I get a replacement laptop. I'm playing this game on PS4.

How will this Let's Play of Mystery Chronicle: One Way Heroics work?

It'll work like this:

1) I will take suggestions for a name for a world, or you can suggest Campaign with a number between 1 and 5 and I will play one of the limited time campaign worlds corresponding to that number.
2) I will take name, class, and type suggestions for a character to explore this world. I reserve the right to select the perks of my choosing, though.
3) Eventually I will take suggestions for quests to undertake. But to start things off we'll focus on killing Alma, the Fallen Angel.
4) I will bash my head against the selected world until I beat it, die three times, or (in the case of Campaign worlds) the world disappears from the list.
5) Lather, rinse, repeat until I beat all the quests or get bored of this LP.

This LP will primarily be screenshots and animated GIFs of select moments from my current adventures with commentary, presented alongside a full video* without commentary.

* Assuming it doesn't go over an hour.

Anyway, let's get this underway.

First things first, suggest a class out of the following:
  • Swordsman
  • Knight
  • Archer
  • Thief
  • Sorcerer
  • Adventurer
  • Half-Beast
  • Ranger
  • Pirate
  • Astrologist
  • Priest
  • Samurai
  • Beast Hunter
  • Assassin
  • Gunner
  • Zombie
  • Queen
  • Dark Knight
  • One Way Hero
  • Dracon
  • Wrestler
  • Wanderer
  • Ult. Student

along with a name featuring up to 8 characters* (No bad words, the game will know!) and the letter A, B, or C.

* Note: For reasons that will become apparent when we pick them, you cannot rename the Wanderer or Ult. Student.

Also suggest a 1-8 character name for the world we will explore. It can a combination of capital and lowercase letters, numbers, and for some reason, periods. Or say Campaign followed by the number 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5.

Just a heads up, but before getting started in a new world I will be doing a run of the Tutorial world with the Swordsman. In the meantime, keep those suggestions coming!

I don't have much opinion on what character to play, but I'm looking forward eagerly to this nonetheless.

I should have an update covering the Tutorial world (which I failed for a dumb reason I will discuss when I talk about it) sometime later today.

In the meantime, here's the tl;dr edition, courtesy of the game's replay feature.

Just a heads-up, but it's going to take a lot longer than I expected to compile the images and GIFs I wanted to use for the Tutorial world. And I'll probably have to split this into two parts. One for the initial tutorial, one for the proper tutorial world seen in the video above.

Episode 0-1: Hey! Listen! Fairy Memoria's Tutorial!

Here's the first part of the tutorial. Animated GIFs of select moments with commentary await in the spoiler pop.

Always go right, do not let the glowing wall of death get to you.

You can break walls, no pickaxe needed. But it helps.

You can run if you really need to get somewhere fast, but being a turn-based game this speeds up the enemies, too.

Eating a Natuya to restore +70 EN. You have three stats up above: HP, ST, and EN. If HP drops to 0, you die. If ST drops to 0, you receive damage if you do any actions that exert stamina (basically mountain climbing, swimming/being in water in general). If EN drops to 0, your HP regenerates slower, your ST stops regenerating altogether, and you receive penalties to your attacks, agility score, and evasion.

Equipment has limited durability and eventually breaks, items all have a WT score and you can't move if you carry too much stuff.

Also you can throw items. There is a reason that thief didn't die in one hit that I'll go over in the next video.

Every class has skills at their disposal, and the one consistency is that everybody gets Awakening. This skill gives you three free turns where time does not advance, and you can only use it five times per adventure. Save it for when you need it most; good situations to use it are handling a large group of enemies (pictured above) or a boss, avoiding enemies, and when you need a few more turns to bust open a chest or tear down a wall before the Shine Raid gets to you.

Traps exist in this game. You can disarm them by swinging your weapon over a revealed trap and you can use them against enemies.

Traps also really suck because they're always hidden in random places. Mines going off when carrying a pile of bombs will be the death of many an adventurer.

Seek out towns on your adventures; an Area Map makes this easier for a while. Most towns will have goods and services to offer, and occasionally allies and ally NPCs you can recruit to help make your adventure an easier one.

Unfortunately we have no money in this tutorial, so all we can do is get some free bread crusts to refill EN a bit.

Unless you're taking on a quest or trying to reach the end of the world, your main goal is to defeat the Fallen Angel to stop the Shine Raid. Alma has barriers that protect her from damage, but they're limited; combos will run them down faster and criticals will ignore them.

We cannot defeat Alma here, though.

Other things:
  • Terrain has an effect on your stats. The desert drops your movement and increases the drain on ST actions.
  • Yes, there are ways to repair your equipment. But we won't see the good ones often.
  • Memoria is with us for the long haul.
  • I usually play the game with voice acting turned off, but I've turned on the English dub for these videos.
  • Yes, there is a reason this game has a dub even though all we've heard so far is grunts.

Next time: King Konrath's plea! Nameless Swordsman and Fairy Memoria in Tutorial World!

Huh, neat, didn't expect this game to have a fairly "realistic" HP-stamina-energy system, but here we are.

Default Just so you know this thread's not dead...

Just some basic backstory stuff.

And here's the ridiculous anime intro made with what assets Spike Chunsoft had on hand. This plays before the title screen and after the first part of the tutorial.

Sorry, but I'm gonna go ahead and declare this LP Abandoned. If I try my hand at another LP, it'll be something a lot shorter (already got something in mind for that) and a lot easier to do with just photos.

Aw, sad I missed this. I got super into this game when it came out here, enough to snag a physical copy. Well, good on ya for starting the LP anyways.
