Default Trial by OCD! Let's play Minecraft: ROGUECRAFT EDITION

Because somehow this game runs faster than dwarf fortress.

TAKING NAMES FOR ENCHANTED GEAR!
ALSO TAKING NAMES FOR THE CHARACTER/PROTAGONIST

YOUTUBE PLAYLIST! CLICK HERE!

So here's how this is going to work. We're not playing Minecraft... we're playing ROGUECRAFT, aka If Minecraft Were A Roguelike. This means I'll be generating a world on hardcore mode, and if I die even once, the world will be locked out and I'll be forced to either delete it or let it sit on the hard drive, taking up space and taunting me with my failures. I will continue doing this until I am able to complete the following three tasks:

Defeat the Ender Dragon and retrieve the Egg
Create and subsequently destroy The Wither and construct a beacon
Locate and clear out an ocean temple by killing all the Elder Guardians and looting the place.

Once I have done this, I will consider the character to have "ascended" (NetHACK slang for victory, coming from the victory condition being trading the MacGuffin for demigodhood) and the LP will be over. Alternatively, the LP will end when I break down crying and screaming in frustration.

This is our world. It is called Roguecraft 19.

Yes, I have already failed 18 attempts. This will be a hell of a project.

TirMcDohl did something like this a few years back, but his mission ended with the ender dragon.

I'm looking forward to this!

Suggestion: Let us vote on what to name any animals you befriend. And any particularly beloved weapons, etc.

Personally, I vote we name our first pair of enchanted pants "Shirt" and our first enchanted breastplate "Pants."

Seriously, though: this is a nightmare. I suspect you will get very efficient at setting up a system to keep yourself fed and equipped.

You should build machines to do everything for you.

Even if you don't, I'm pretty interested in this. Good luck.

Pretty cool how you survived almost everything the game managed to throw at you! There were multiple times watching it where I thought "Oh man he's so fucked" and you somehow pulled through!

An hour is a LITTLE LONG for a single episode though. My gold standard is around 20 minutes, maybe you could edit your next one down a little bit?

Yeah, I played for MANY hours yesterday, and recorded about half of it (the other half was spent fishing off-camera, because there's no way I can possibly edit that to look remotely engaging). That stuff's getting cut down. The only reason I didn't cut this one is because there really wasn't a good spot. I mean, I COULD have cliffhangered it but that's kinda mean to do on the FIRST episode.

I'm sure there will be potential for exciting cliffhangers in the near future though. Next recording session has me going into The Cave Of Horrible.

I just uploaded a ton of videos. Six more episodes, to be exact.

Do y'all really want me to embed them all or should I just direct everyone to the playlist at the top of the OP? Because... yeah.

I always go the Embed route so I can write WAY TOO MANY WORDS beneath each and every one.

Episode 3 features the expansion of the wood farm, the beginning of underground excavation, and a whole bunch of boring busywork tasks I should've cut out, but decided instead that I'd keep it in and explain internal mechanics during the time.

Of note: I've already uploaded through episode 8 on the playlist, and while I'll space the replies here out over a few days, I won't likely be recording for a while, just because I've been doing a LOT of fishing. And nobody has time to watch that shit.

In this episode, I demonstrate proper lighting procedure, declare myself to be A TIME WIZARD, and begin digging out a new home underground. What can I say, I'm more comfortable under the stone.

Couple more episodes of this homemaking stuff, and then we're gonna get STUPID in the caves...

In this episode, I flirt with disaster, harvest animal flesh, and run out into the wilderness and chop down a whole bunch of trees for no reason other than I can do it.

In time-wizardry related news, I lucked out and saved 80+ minutes of what I thought was lost footage, and starting with episode 9, the episodes are getting edited to cut out totally useless recording. Also, Fun happens. Prepare your butts.

In this episode, I don't know how horses work, tempt fate with a chasm of doom, and start moving into the Dorf Cave.

EDIT: Looks like I'm a liar and what I thought was salvaged footage was actually another recording session entirely. I made three cave trips, and only the third (and most interesting) was lost. FARTS.

Just wanted to let you know that I've been watching these!

I like them! You are entertaining and informative, and I say that as a man who is largely incapable of actually playing minecraft!

In this episode, I wrangle some chickens, have a harrowing experience with the Eldritch Gate, and finish moving my furniture into the new home.

Also, consider my heart officially warmed. I mean, like I said, this is round 19, and I was gonna keep putting these vids out whether or not anyone cared, but now I feel more like I'm providing art to the community, instead of subjecting you people to my mouth pollution.

In this episode, I show off the home renovations, demonstrate the power of fishing, and burn a creeper to death with lava.

In this episode, I build my security box, wrangle some cows and make some anti-skeleton racist remarks. (It's okay, though, because they're all evil monsters.)

Also, I fixed the "broken" links. The reason they were broken is because I keep trying to put full URLs in the youtube tags. Silly me!

In this episode, I play hide and seek with an Enderman, use the Super-Bow on the Creeper Brigade, and vow to dig deeply and greedily, as any true dwarf should strive for. But not in the lava ravine, because FUUUUUUUCK that noise.

That being said, there's a nonzero chance I might go secure that area if I get bored. NO clue how to edit that together, though... I might need a co-commentator! Le gasp! (The alternative is to do most of the grunt work off-camera entirely, but that risks dying off-camera and that's dumb. What I've been doing is recording hour-plus sessions at a time and cutting out the grunt work, but if I record for too long in one sitting, we risk Percy dropping all the footage.)

I'm still interested in the concept of your LP and wish you the best of luck, but I'm not exactly a long videos guy. I'm not necessarily asking for anything here, so feel free to ignore me, but more detailed video summaries would be cool.

Hah, yeah, you and me both. The only reason I haven't done it yet (or better yet, scrapped the video concept and done it screenshot style) is cause I just can't seem to summarize what goes on in much more detail than "I mined a bunch. Then I put torches everywhere. Then I planted a sign. Repeat times fifteen."

Cutting out the more filler bits after you've showcased them might work - I do it in my LP. Or at least I try to :V

Honestly though, I think your system of not cutting footage is fine right now, because this is the first RougeCraft run you're displaying so far. Once you inevitably are treated to the harsh realities of PERMADEATH, you can totally cut massive amounts of setup and stuff that we've already seen, but on this one leaving it all in sets the baseline for what future runs will be like.

And if by some miracle you manage to see this run through to the bitter end... Fuckin awesome!

Just chiming in to say I've been watching these too, they made great videos to have on while I was mindlessly going through the first hour or two of FF5.

I've never been able to get too much into Minecraft, as much as I'd like to. Every time I try I eventually get to a point where I need to keep a window open to some wiki to get the recipes I need and my interest peters out shortly after.

BEAT probably has the right idea re: cutting footage. If you ever have to re-roll then, yes, I'd cut out a lot of the grass-cutting and basic digging and clearing and etc. For now though it's probably fine.

Believe it or not, from episode 9 on, I've actually been cutting quite a bit! My plan has been to leave in the first pass through a particular tunnel, as I'm lighting it up and putting down signs. Tomorrow's episode even features fast-forward mode!

That being said, things are about to get shaken up. Let's just say that I Did A Thing...

Also, episode eleven, in which I craft the Rod of Plenty, measure my height to be exactly sea level, and spend too much time in the wrong damn cave.

EDIT! Because of EVENTS, I am now taking naming suggestions for gear. And we should name the character, because why not.

Gear I currently have access to and/or in abundance: Armor (Iron) (Helms, breastplate, leggings/greaves, and boots), picks, axes, rods, bows, swords, shovels, hoes (NOT FUCKING WORTH MAKING ANY MORE EVER), and I guess any other miscellaneous equipment or tools that you guys are particularly attached to.

In this episode, I demonstrate a zombie spawner, foreshadow overpowered bow enchantments, and dance with lava in fast-forward.

Frankly, if you skipped this episode, I wouldn't blame you. The next one is where things get interesting, though...

I'll throw up a desc for this one later. Just... if you watch no other episode all the way through, watch this one. I don't wanna spoil too much, but let's just say that about five minutes in, we say so long to the caves and we get all kinds of sparkly all up ins.

In this episode, I embark into a new and exciting frontier, almost burn to death, and finally use that book I fished up forever ago.
