Default The Doom that Came to Mordavia: Let's Play Quest for Glory: Shadows of Darkness

Shortly after finding his way out of the dark cave, the hero meets a mysterious woman named Katrina. He traverses the swamps in the dark forest and finally reaches the town. However, the town is also engulfed by a foreboding atmosphere, and the hero cannot allow himself to relax. He must find out what is going on, why the town inhabitants are so hesitant and reluctant to help him, and what horrors are lurking outside of its walls. Life has never been quite so dangerous for our hero. He'll discover his quest soon enough - that is, if he lives.

Additionally, the undead and Lovecraftian monsters differed significantly from the lighter monsters of earlier games (there were, however, vampiric rabbits reminiscent of Monty Python and the Holy Grail). Moreover, to fight the new monsters, Quest for Glory IV implemented an entirely new fighting system. While sometimes criticized as clunky, the new system was undeniably different.

The CD-ROM version of Quest for Glory IV is the first game in the series to feature voice actors and an audible narrator, John Rhys-Davies. Additionally, the game featured a largely original sound track by Aubrey Hodges – although it did feature a reprise of the Hero’s Theme from previous games and a rendition of "Anitra's Dance" by Edvard Grieg which played as background music in the Hotel Mordavia.

According to an InterAction magazine article, John Rhys-Davies' part took more than three weeks to record, causing him to refer to the game as the "CD-ROM from Hell".

The dub of a trio of local farmers is conspicuous for its emphasis on quips and banter, and its indifference to what actually reads on their text boxes.

The narrator's voice is provided by John Rhys Davis - famous for his role as Sallah in the Indiana Jones movies, and Ghimli in the Lord of the Rings films - and while he has some fun with certain lines, it's a bit on the dry side.

The music in the Quest for Glory games has usually been pretty decent, but there's been little outside of the title themes or battle songs that really stood out. In contrast, Shadow of Darkness' soundtrack is particularly spectacular, especially with its battle themes and beautiful rock ballads. Although it could've benefitted from real guitar instrumentation, the MIDI music - even on the weak Adlib synth - is pretty damn good, and easily up next to Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, as the best Sierra soundtrack.

If you've forgotten who are hero is you can catch his adventures here:

Quest For Glory: So You Want to be A Hero
Quest For Glory 2: Trials by Fire
Quest for Glory III: Wages of War

Sadly, I've had quite a bit of computer trouble between now and the last LP and the saved file for our dear Garcon Perseii Jackson Danar Seepgood, Magister Esoterica of the Third Eye, Lord of Keys, Hero of Spielburg, Prince of Shapier, Savior of Raseir, and the Glory of Tarna has been lost.

This is what he looked like last we saw him:

Now some questions:

1) Do I recreate Garcon using black cyber arts or just start a new character that is a close proxy of him?

2) This game has a kick ass soundtrack and awesome voice acting, as highlighted above. None of that is going to come through in a screenshot LP though... So, do you want a video LP or a screenshot LP where I try to highlight the soundtrack and voice acting through whatever I find on-line and at youtube?

Are you ready to enter the dark lands?

1) No other game gives you so many options as you fight the forces of the Dark One! So you should use those options to recreate our hero.

2) The VA is amazing, but I personally prefer a screenshot LP :I

Please recreate Garcon Perseii as best you can.

As for the format, I selfishly prefer screenshot LPs (a lot easier to read at work ;D ), but maybe you can refer us to embedded YouTube videos for particularly good songs or voiceover bits?

I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS!

I would also love to see a screendhot LP, maybe with video clips of the more memorable scenes... but I'm just glad Garcon is back in the saddle again!

Don't overwork yourself. This will be a good game no matter how close we got to Original Jackson.

VIDEO LP MASTER RACE.

Nah screenshot with relevant links would probably work better for a game like this. What kind of game is this anyways? Asking for a friend.

That said if you're not confident you'd be able to find the voicebits & stuff you want on Youtube, you might consider keeping a recording running of your own play session and chopping out the relevant parts for upload to youtube.

It would probably be a giant pain in the ass though.

There's no way the voice clips aren't already on YouTube. Finding them would probably be a bear, though.

I have to say I really love this description:

Turns out these dark arts are harder to do than I thought! But it turns out a new character will start with higher stats than we would if we imported Garcon... though buying magic will take up all our extra points and I don't know if we'll get all the magic spells we need...

Let me poke around some more...

Apparently, if you import the character from QFG1, his stats will all be multiplied by a factor of 4.

Default Some Background

For those of you who don't remember or can't be bothered to go through my previous LPs in the QfG series, here is Garcon's Story so far:

In the beginning, Perseii a no account wandering hero of no reputation showed up in Spielburg, a valley that had been cursed for many years. The Baron of the valley tried to drive away the Ogress, Baba Yaga, he failed and she cursed him. The curse robbed the baron of his his son and daughter. The realm was overrun with brigands and monsters, and the Baron locked himself away in his castle. That's when Jackson showed up. He became friends with the innkeepers, Kattas names Shameen and Shema. He also got to know their merchant friend, Abdulla Doo. He also met such people as Zara, the owner of the Magic Shop, the Wizard Erasmus and his rat-like familiar Fenrus. He traveled to many interesting places, encountering many new forms of flora and fauna which he promptly killed. It was in Spielburg that Danar first learned of the great Archmage Erana, and even found her meadow, believed to be her final resting place...

He freed an enchanted bear, who turned out to be the Baron of Spielburg's lost son, Barnard. By spying on brigand's int he valley he learned of a plot to overthrow their leader and then found a way into their forest fortress snuck his way to the leader's room, and dispelled the enchantment on her. The leader was, in reality, the Baron's daughter, Elsa. After leaving the fortress, the Hero made a visit to, Baba Yaga and drove her from the land.

After freeing Spielburg of the Ogress' curse, our hero, Seepgood, travelled to the desert realm of Shapeir, with the Kattas and Abdulla Doo. The Emir of Raseir had disappeared a year ago, and a portent of evil hung over the entire realm. Garcon made new friends in this desert realm, including the Liontaur Paladin, Rakeesh, the warrior woman, Uhura, and the Enchantress Aziza. Using his wits and some magic Perseii saved the city from the ravages of four Elementals, and freed the spirit of the tree healer, Julanar.

After saving the city of Shapeir, he traveled to Raseir, where he made himself known to the city's criminal underbelly before eventually being captured and hypnotized by the evil Wizard, Ad Avis, and taken to the Forbidden City, to obtain the Statue of Iblis, which Ad Avis intended to use to take over the world. After escaping the tomb with the help of a genie, Danar assaulted the Palace and knocked Ad Avis off the balcony of the Ritual Chamber. For his actions, in Shapeir and Raseir, Jackson was adopted by the Sultan Harun al-Rashid, and became the Prince of Shapeir.

Shortly after this victory, Rakeesh's wife, Kreesha, called him back to his homeland of Tarna. There was talk of war between two native tribes in his homeland and it was believed only Rakeesh could prevent the conflict. Rakeesh brought the Prince of Shapeir and Uhura with him to Tarna in the land of Fricana. Seepgood met more colorful people here, including Salim the Apothecary, Yesufu the Simbani Warrior, and Johari the Leopardwoman. Through his usual mix of magic, charm, and quick fingers Garcon brought peace between thetribes by returning their sacred artifacts, and travelled to the Lost City of Eastern Fricana to put an end to the Demons that caused the war.

But after defeating the demons, his doppleganger, and a demonic wizard our hero was summoned away to places unknown by dark magicks!

And using a little dark magic of my own, here's Garcon:

All of Garcon's stats that were under 200 the game bumped up to 200, except for magic for some reason... The game gave us 100 points to spread around I sunk most of them into magic, and thief skills.

Here is the introduction to the game:

And here we are welcome to... somewhere?

Our inventory:

Our money, not much:

Our magic:

And we're off!

Default In a Cave Darkly

Imagine that being read to you in the husky, seductive voice of Gimli the Dwarf.

Ahh, that's nice right?

Not the nicest looking place Garcon's ever been... Is this what BEAT's house looks like? Is that BEAT right there? Perseii checks the skeleton:

Then his neighbor:

Next, Jackson violates the remains on the bottom left of the screen:

With all skeletons looted, Garcon checks out the rock he picked up and the rest of his inventory:

The only other thing of interest in the room is that alter looking thing to the right:

Right next to the alter is a torch, and you never know when one of those will come in handy Danar swipes it and using his knife and the piece of flint lights it:

That's better! It should make navigating that spinal bridge up ahead easier! When he approaches the sphincter looking thing at the end of the bridge it opens and Seepgood heads deeper(?) into the cave(?)

Garcon looks closer at the alter in the center of the room:

Unpleasant.

A sharp eye, and you know Perseii is, catches something scratched on a rock near the south exit:

Ah, a thief mark! This one seems to be indicating that there is an exit to the south! This is good news as none of the other doors in this room will open. Danar heads south:

As Jackson approaches the edge of the ledge he's on he looks over the rope to see what condition it's in. It seems to be sturdy enough to support his weight. As he's looking over the rope something below him in the pit catches his eye:

That's bad.

Nothing helping it though, Garcon climbs onto the rope and begins to the tightrope walk:

(You can see some computer timing issues here. Some of the events in the game use the CPUs timer and the coders never thought there'd be computers as fast as ours... The hero should have plenty of stamina to cross the rope but it's fully depleted at about the half way point. I don't think it'll be an issue in the game but we'll see!)

Once across the pit Danar heads through the tunnel to the north:

Default Out of Harm's Way?

That tunnel leads out of the Dark One's cave/lair and into... a real dump! Where is Perseii?

As Jackson approaches the land, and the women on it's shore:

"Tell me truly, were they as dashing as me though?"

Smooth Seepgood...

Ladies love mysterious strangers with an attraction to Danger! And that answers our earlier question. Welcome to Mordavia Garcon! It's apparently not safe here! Like every other place you've ever been.

"But we hardly had time to flirt!"

With that Katrina disappears into Mordavia. I've got a feeling we'll be running into her again! Just a hunch, an itch, on my neck...

With Katrina gone Perseii is free to examine the arch at the entrance to the cave:

So fascinating Jackson decides to take it for himself!

With nothing else to do here for the moment, and vague directions to a town Garcon heads into the wilderness of Mordavia:

Mordavia is not putting its best foot forward to impress the regions newest guest... Beyond the slime and the monolith Jackson also notes a small tree in a small pool of slime (on the lower right hand side of the screen)

He makes a mental note and begins to carefully walk down the path:

That's one way to get down... He moves deeper into Mordavia:

Yeah, really not feeling welcomed...

Default North to Somewhere!

There's no way Garcon is going to explore a swamp where the dead entrapped within it seem intent to have you join them! North it is, which is where Katrina told us to go anyway:

Finally! A landscape that doesn't appear to be overtly trying to kill our hero for simply existing! North!

This Mordavia is beginning to look downright pleasant! North!

She said there was a town somewhere up here...

We can't go any further north, and we still haven't run into the town Katrinia mentioned. Garcon flips a coin and goes east:

And there in the distance is the town! Better go introduce yourself the natives!

Perseii notices the stump by the side of the rode and looks in it:

Score!

No use waiting outside, I suppose:

Danar casts detect magic and to the surprise of literally no one:

Magic: sometimes redundant

Seepgood reaches out to touch the staff:

Creepy!

Jackson walks beyond the staff toward the buildings in the distance. As soon as we enter the next screen:

Oh, great the people of Mordavia are as friendly as the land they live in...

Garcon tries to tell the Burgomeister how he came here but:

I can't really blame him, can you?

Next week! We explore this quaint, friendly hamlet we just discovered.

Argh I can't read this LP because I love this series but this is the one game I've never tried and everyone says it's the best and now I own it but I need to play it myself before I read this because it sounds too good to spoil but I'll never find the time.

Nah, 2 is the best, and 4 is only better than 1 if you have the version with voice acting.

Anyway, the easy solution is to read the LP and play the game as a different class. Most of the puzzle solutions will be different. Problem solved!

Default Friendly Neighborhood...

Last week Garcon made his way out of a creepy cave, met a mysterious lady, and made his way to the town of Mordavia. Where he was grumpily greeted by the town's Burgomeister, he's like a combination mayor and sheriff, who didn't believe a word we said about who he was or how he ended up in their quaint, quiet valley... Despite his unfriendly manner Perseii attempts to engage the Burgomeister in conversation:

See? Super friendly. A small, xenophobic town in a valley full of killer monsters!

The Burgomeister doesn't have anything more to say for the moment so Jackson takes his leave and starts to explore the town:

(just like I said!)

Just like Dmitri said! Danar heads into the Shop first:

"I literally just got here. How could you possibly know that? Well, I guess I should introduce myself. I'm Prince..."

As you can see the shopkeeper has a lot to say...

Default Checking Inn

Small aside here. I hope some of you have noticed the parallels between the set-up for QfG4 and QfG1? Already we note that both begin with our hero being trapped in a valley with a small town and a castle. As we explore the game more I'll try to point out additional similarities... If I miss any please feel free to point them out.

I like to think that the current realities in the valley of Mordavia are what would have happened in Spielburg if the hero hadn't shown up. That's it! Maybe try to keep this in mind as we go through the game.

After talking with the shopkeeper Seepgood goes next door to the Inn:

Oh, great another friendly face...

"But the sign outside said it was an 'inn?'"

This all happens automatically. We don't have a choice in whether or not we stay at the end. If you walk into it you're going to be paying for it.

Garcon looks over at the villagers sitting in the inn's common room:

Default Village Idiots

The voice actors for these guys go way off script and are impersonating some famous Hollywood actors. Seriously, the voice work for these three is the only thing that made me want to do this as a video LP. For a sampling of their work I put a link in below:

Town Folk Talk

Despite the stares and whispers Perseii approaches the the villagers and introduces himself:

See, what you're missing here with a screencap LP is that the voice actors added stinky as a description to the people. So in the end the last statement is "Ya. Many stinky people."

Classic!

I'm beginning to see why the people here are so unfriendly. The whole place is starting to seem like a downer...

Default Northern section of Town

The townsfolk don't have much more to say really. So, Jackson says goodbye and leaves the inn and heads to the northern part of town:

That must be the creepy monastary people have mentioned. It and the castle outside of town seem to be the two place people say to keep away from. Besides the swamp and the cave of the dark god, and anyplace at night generally...

Danar looks at the building on the left:

This is actually the Adventurer's Guild Hall, but yeah, it doesn't look like it's been open in quite awhile...

And the one on the right:

"Six legged cephalopod, huh? Those seem to keep turning up..."

Next, we look a the tiny man hunched over by the closed building:

Seepgood talks to the fellow and runs down the list of conversation points:

Next, he checks the door on the guild hall but finds its locked. Normally, Garcon would just pick the lock but he lost his tools in the journey to Mordavia. He could also just cast open. But, with the little guy sitting right there and the aversion everyone here seems to have to magic that probably isn't a good idea. Instead he heads back to the Burgomeister:

Score! Next week we check out the Guild Hall, explore the rest of town and then probably get into trouble!

I'm so sorry I missed the start of this!

I absolutely adore the art of this game, especially when it veers into German Expressionism territory with its intentionally odd angles.

like here with the monastery:

or the cozy shop:

or the looming foregrounds of these spoilery images:

just amazing, amazing work.
