Default LET'S PLAY HOTLINE MIAMI 1 & 2 - America is a tune, it must be sung together.

Hello ladies and gentlemen. Welcome to Let's Play the Hotline Miami Series.

The Hotline Miami series consists of a pair 2D top-down action games made by Jonatan Sderstrm and Dennis Wedin working together as Dennaton Games. The first game, simply titled Hotline Miami, was released October 2012. Its sequel, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, was released in March 2015. The games are known for their heavily stylized graphics, challenging fast paced trial-and-error gameplay, deliberately confusing storyline, and their use of pulse-pounding techno music. Was there anything else? Because I feel like I'm forgetting something...

Oh right of course! THE VIOLENCE. The Hotline Miami games are brutal, but not just in terms of difficulty. The pixelated graphics do very little to disguise that this is a game about amoral monsters doing horrible things. That said this isn't a case of gratuitous pointless violence as seen in games like Mortal Kombat. Here the violence is absolutely the point. They ask "Do you enjoy hurting people", and they expect you to have an answer.

HOW IS THIS LET'S PLAY GONNA WORK?

I will be recording all the footage for this let's play hangout stream style, which basically means I'll be playing the game with a bunch of funny and cool internet friends on the call, who may or may not even bother to actually watch the game.

I realize this makes for commentary that isn't always 100% focused on the game itself, but Hotline's not really the kind of game you can do a focused live commentary on. The very nature it's levels means it could take anywhere from 30 seconds to 30 minutes to finish one, and I'd rather have a relaxed chillout stream that's not always on point than commentary from four guys absolutely suffering while they try to think of interesting things to say about me failing the same floor 50 times in a row. If you've seen any of my other LPs on this forum, you know what you're getting into. After the footage is in the can, I'll be chopping it into individual level videos, and posting them here, alongside writeups where I try to hit on everything important in that chunk of the game.

As is customary, please enjoy the complete YOUTUBE PLAYLIST. I also am happy to present a CHRONOLOGICAL PLAYLIST that takes all the videos, and arranges them in order according to the dates the events in them took place! You can now experience the timeline of hotline Miami as it mostly actually happened! How about that?!

HM1 CHAPTER 00 - THE METRO

APRIL 3RD 1989

COMMUTERS
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Paris

In which we breeze through a surreal tutorial, experience a rather surreal vision of being spoken to by a trio of masked individuals in a dark room, then head out on our first mission: obtain a suitcase, then leave it in a dumpster.

QUICK NOTES
  • THE TITLE ON THE START SCREEN IS IN RUSSIAN. Also wow there seem to be a lot of Russian Gangsters in Florida, huh? wonder why that is?
  • EVERY MISSION STARTS WITH JACKET IN HIS APARTMENT. Right now the place is mostly pretty clean, if a bit sparse. He gets coded instructions on what to do from his answering machine, which he obeys without question. So in case it's not obvious, he's not well.
  • JACKET'S NOT USED TO THIS SORT OF THING YET. After offing a handful of Russian mobsters, and a homeless man who was apparently just in the wrong place at the wrong time, he breaks down and vomits.
  • THE DUDE IN THE CONVENIENCE STORE IS KNOWN AS "BEARD". He's basically Jacket's only friend, and he never charges him a dime. That's not weird or anything.

IN GREATER DETAIL

SO THOSE THREE MASKED GUYS IN THE DIM ROOM HUH? They're never identified by anything other than the names on their masks, which you can pick at the start of each level. Rasmus the Owl has the body of one of the enemy mobsters, and he acts openly antagonistic towards you. Don Juan the Horse has the body of a woman who's identity hasn't been revealed yet. She comes off as mostly sympathetic towards you. Finally there's Richard the Rooster, who's body is identical to your own, and who's mask is the first one you receive in the game. He speaks in riddles and generally seems to know much more than he lets on.

Smiler: Hi! I'm Henry Hotline Miami! You're really killing it in the game today kiddo! But I want you to know, in the real world, killing is.

This game sure is a game.

It is only a game.

Please don't go to the cops, because it is only a game.

And now for Rebel Knows Too Much About This Game:
  • You would get Rasmus from this level
  • The letter for this level is "U"
  • The dude with the briefcase is very frail; even just a punch will kill him
  • This level has an additional mask in the PS3/PS4/Vita versions of the game called Russell. It's effect is "Raging Bull" and gives the game a Black and White filter.

Death Count: 2

Brandon is the best mask. Gotta go fast

HM1 CHAPTER 01 - NO TALK

APRIL 8TH 1989

SERVITUDE OF SILENCE
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Crystals

In which we read part of a pink newsletter left on our kitchen table, then head back out into the world for a little bit of the old ultraviolence.

QUICK NOTES
  • THE NEWSLETTER ON THE TABLE IS FROM THE GROUP "50 BLESSINGS". We're a proud subscriber!
  • I SPEAK BRIEFLY ON HOW JACKET IS AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR? Minor spoiler I suppose, but I've already got pretty much his entire campaign fully recorded, so we'll be getting into exactly how that effects what we're seeing soon enough.
IN GREATER DETAIL
THERE'S A RED 50 BLESSINGS LOGO PAINTED ON THE FLOOR OUTSIDE THE APARTMENT. Hotline 2 reveals that this was likely left by other 50 Blessings "subscribers" who haven't quite gotten to the point where they're willing to slaughter a room full of armed mobsters, possibly as a sign to let their murder members know they've got the right place.

HM1 CHAPTER 02 - OVERDOSE

APRIL 16TH 1989

JUNKIES
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
Jasper Byrne - Hotline

In which we embark on our third mission, and kill everybody at a methadone clinic. which is actually a front for the mob.

QUICK NOTES
  • I MISSED CHECKING THE NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS ON JACKET'S COFFEE TABLE AND BY HIS SINK. They're all related to the murders he's committed up to this point. In case it's not obvious, Jacket is kind of completely out of his mind.
  • SMILER MENTIONS THAT JACKET IS A DLC CHARACTER IN PAYDAY 2. His character class is, "Sociopath" and he's voiced by various recordings that he plays on a tape recorder. Smiler claims he kind of a regular nobody, which I argue is the point.
IN GREATER DETAIL

THIS LEVEL CONTAINS THE FIRST FINDABLE MASK. It's called Earl and unfortunately you don't see me pick it up here because I already grabbed it in a prior playthrough. It would be found on the desk in the southernmost room on the second floor. That said while the mask is gone, it's original owner (presumably named Earl) is still there, slumped over dead on the right side of the desk. This means that you're not the first person sent to attack this location, just the first to succeed.

HM1 CHAPTER 03 - DECADENCE

APRIL 25TH 1989

FILM CREW
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Hydrogen
M|O|O|N - Release

In which Jacket, noted sociopath and mass-murderer... actually makes a friend?

QUICK NOTES
  • I'M NOT 100% SURE WHAT KIND OF BUILDING WE'RE INVADING HERE. The obvious answer is always "Video game level" but for the most part these games are actually pretty good at setting up their layouts to look like they could be actual buildings with actual purpose. Given the placement of beds, The huge ornate bathroom, and the fucked up room in the back with all the recording equipment, I'm gonna guess with "rich bastard's beach house converted into a porn studio."
  • WE ENCOUNTER OUR FIRST "BOSS". The big giant guy can only be hurt with firearms, you can kill him as soon as he's down, but if you knock him to the floor three times like I do, he'll plead for his life and not get back up.
  • MEET "HOOKER". She's the only person in the game that Jacket seems to care about other than the bearded fellow that runs every place he shops at. Given the shape she's in when we "save" her, I don't really want to think about exactly what kind of film these guys were making.
Also you can spin her around as you carry her out. Ladyspin is OP please nerf.

HM1 CHAPTER 04 - TENSION

MAY 5TH 1989

IMAGINARY FRIENDS
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Paris

In which we enter part two of the game, have a brief interlude in a dark room, and then have our first encounter with the worst enemy ever!

I refer of course, to dogs.

QUICK NOTES
  • WELCOME BACK TO THE DARK ROOM. Don Juan drops some really obtuse hints to the fact that we're not getting all the details of our adventures 100% correct. Rasmus just hates on us, like he always does. Finally Richard asks us some piercing questions, none of which Jacket knows the answers to. BUT I DO! Check out the spoilerpop in the greater detail section for more.
  • DON JUAN'S BODY IS THE HOOKER'S. I didn't tell you earlier because hooker hadn't been introduced yet. But now she has! So yeah.
  • I MENTION "THE GAME I JUST STREAMED." I'm referring to the dinner date, have you read my LP of the dinner date? You should read my LP of the dinner date.
  • I DIE A TON AT THE START OF THIS VIDEO. Hotline Miami's all about getting into a groove and I'm just totally botching it here.
  • THE PHONE CALL MENTIONS THAT THEY ALREADY SENT ONE GUY BUT HE DIDN'T SUCCEED. That would be the guy in the room that's rigged with explosives. The shock I felt when I played this level for the first time and suddenly half the map blew up in my face is something I still remember very clearly.
  • JACKET'S IDENTITY REVEALED! 600 Pounds of Cocain and a Garfield Phone! It's gotta be Richard Harrison! Haha, inside jokes.
  • RICHTER, THE RAT MASK MAKES HIS FIRST APPEARANCE. Unlike Don Juan, Rasmus and Richard, Richter actually exists in conventional reality! That said appearance here getting mean mugged by mobsters outside beard's store, is almost certainly just something Jacket is hallucinating.

IN GREATER DETAIL
RICHARD'S Q&A SHOWDOWN. So Richard has four questions for Jacket, and Jacket, (who never really figures out what's going on) doesn't have a solid answer for any of them.

1.) DO YOU LIKE HURTING OTHER PEOPLE. He absolutely does. His breakdown in the first level is now a distant memory, and as the game wears on Jacket's methods become more and more openly sadistic. The way he killed the boss in the last level comes immeidiately to mind but it's not the worst execution we're going to see by far.

2.) WHO IS LEAVING MESSAGES ON YOUR ANSWERING MACHINE? Jacket has seriously no idea who's giving him these commands. In the end he decides (against all logic) that it's the very mob organization he's systematically slaughtering. In reality it's 50 Blessings, a patriot organization that he subscribes to the newsletter of.

3.) WHERE ARE YOU RIGHT NOW. After this "dream" the game places Jacket in his room. But as I've outright said in the videos, Jacket's not really there either. He's currently in a hospital bed, in a feverish coma, re-living the events of the last few months in his mind, and filling in any fuzzy details with whatever "sounds right".

4.) WHY ARE WE HAVING THIS CONVERSATION. This one's just fucking rhetorical. Still, as long as we're here...

I interpret these scenes in the dark dirty room as Jacket trying, (and failing) to reconcile who he thinks he is against what he's done. Don Juan, lit in blue and appearing as someone who cares about him, shows him concern and shades of kindness. A brief glimpse of humanity that he wants to believe he still has. Rasmus, lit in red and looking like the people he's killed hurls insults at him, and claims that he's a monster. Finally Richard, lit in yellow and looking like Jacket himself, offers no emotion at all, just questions.

And he has no answers.

Jacket is a silent protagonist, but it's not so the player can project a personality onto him like in other video games. In fact, most of his scripted actions serve to horrify and alienate the player. It's my personal theory that he doesn't speak because he's so completely at a loss that he couldn't think of anything to say if he tried. And it's because he's so lost that he he'll jump on anything offering guidance. Even an answering machine.

Hotline 2 reveals that someone knew he was the perfect candidate to follow morally dubious orders from an uncaring source, and that by extension, it's possible he was targeted by 50 blessings from the very beginning. But we'll get to that later.

I remember when I played this game and I asked you if there was a way to save the guy in there. I don't think I was motivated by kindness (hell I still didn't really know why we saved the girl last video, and from her dialogue she wasn't really expecting salvation anyway) so much as DUDE MIGHT HAVE A NEW MASK GIVE PLS.

the guy getting mugged is Dennis, the mask you would get for beating the next level

EDIT

minor thing, in Decadence you can attempt to leave before picking up Hooker, and if you do:

Code:
Hooker: Hey asshole, you can't just *cough* leave me here. I got nowhere to go.

Hooker: Why don't you finish what you started?
The dude in the room you explode is Tony.

Total letters, in order of level: U T A O A E

Beating the level Overdose while wearing the Nigel mask nets you a secret achievement, "Batman".

HM1 CHAPTER 05 - FULL HOUSE

APRIL 11TH 1989

ROWDY ROOMATES
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Crystals

In which we finally hit a level that gives me way more trouble than it should! It's not the worst level in the games by far but you would be forgiven for thinking otherwise because oh my god BEAT, git gud scrublord.

QUICK NOTES
  • HOOKER SEEMS TO BE DOING MUCH BETTER. you can see her in front of the bathroom mirror in the intro. Her new roommate is probably far more dangerous than any of her prior captors combined, but hey at least he's not savagely beating her to death! No he saves that for other people.
  • I'M PROBABLY WRONG ABOUT THE CROWBAR. It's less that it has to be at THAT EXACT SPOT and more that you just have to be able to get it on your way out of the house. Still, given how I toss weapons all over the place it's better for me that I just let that one be.
  • THE DOGS ARE ABSOLUTE MOTHERFUCKERS. They are so fast, and you can't stun them, so you'd better kill them the second they see you.
  • YOU CAN SERIOUSLY JUST SKIP AHEAD TO LIKE 6:44. The first half of this video is basically a travesty. I am so sorry.
  • EASTER EGG TIME! Grab the crowbar when you leave the level, and instead of going to your car go around the entire outside of the building to find a manhole cover. I have no idea how they expected anyone to find this one.
  • THE GUY IN THE SEWER WOULD GIVE THE ALLIGATOR MASK IF I HADN'T ALREADY GOTTEN IT. If we assume the masks are named after their original owners, then this guy is "Jones". He rattles off some cryptic phrases before apparently dying from his wounds.

There's always Lenny, right? except that you wouldn't have that one during a first play But there's also Tony, especially since there's another trophy here for beating the level barehanded.

because with Tony, punching things is never the wrong answer

HM1 CHAPTER 06 - CLEAN HIT

MAY 15TH 1989

JANITORIAL STAFF
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
Jasper Byrne - Hotline

In which we storm a hotel. Seems like pretty standard affair by now. Bust into a building, start stacking bodies. Everything's the same as it's been for awhile now, right?

Wrong.

QUICK NOTES
  • THE JANITORS. You run into one of them while leaving your apartment, and make uncomfortable eye-contact with the other as you pass by the hotel room he's cleaning. Neither of them say anything, they just them just leer at you with the smuggest faces imaginable. Check in greater Detail for More
  • JANITORS ASIDE, THIS LEVEL IS STILL REALLY WEIRD.It introduces a bunch of things you haven't seen or done before, and a few that never get seen again. For example there's a bunch of enemies on the first floor that are actually dressed as waiters. It's also one of the first real cases where blind firing is actively encouraged to clear out a huge open space.
  • BEARD MENTIONS THE FACT THAT THERE'S A WHOLE ORGANIZATION OF GUYS DOING WHAT WE'RE DOING IN THE POST LEVEL VIDEO STORE VISIT. Just in case you missed Earl, (kinda hard to miss) the guy strapped to the giant bomb (REALLY hard to miss) or Jones in the sewer (Actually really easy to miss).
IN GREATER DETAIL

THIS IS THE FIRST LEVEL SINCE THE INTRO WHERE YOU HAVE TO KILL PEOPLE WHO WON'T FIGHT BACK. The restaurant area has several large enemies that won't leave their chairs when the shootings starts. They just sit there, not threatening you or anybody and you cannot advance until you kill them. Same goes for the guy in the bathroom upstairs. The game has effectively removed Jacket's ability to claim that "It's them or me".

THE JANITORS ARE BASICALLY 50 BLESSINGS MIDDLE MANAGEMENT. I will be getting the secret ending to this game and go into more detail on it there, but for now just know that the two of them know exactly what's going on. The one in the entrance of Jacket's apartment is presumably to get a quick look at him in person to make sure he's still at least halfway functional. Likewise the one upstairs in the hotel is probably there to keep an eye on Jacket while he's "working" and possibly destroy evidence that would incriminate either of them after the fact.

Another fun time hidden achievement here: on the second floor there's a fire axe hidden in the hallway; if you grab that and kill the guy on the toilet with it you get the "Smell Something Burning" achievement.

HM1 CHAPTER 07 - NEIGHBORS

MAY 23RD 1989

PHONE COMPANY
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Hydrogen
M|O|O|N - Release

Murdering Entire buildings full of dangerous criminals has become kind of commonplace for our good friend jacket! So let's mix it up a little bit at the Phone company!

QUICK NOTES
  • I MENTION JACKET'S BATHROOM HAS NO TOILET. Apparently the devs just forgot to put it in! how about that, huh?
  • I ONLY DIE TWICE ON THIS LEVEL! You'd think I knew what I was doing!
  • PHONEHOM IS FULL OF DEAD BODIES
  • I MENTION IN THE CALL THAT NEITHER BIKER OR JACKET DIE. Whaaaaaat? Check "in greater detail" for more... uh... details.
  • BEARD MENTIONS SAN FRANSISCO. I immediately tell everybody what happened in San Fran in the video, but I actually regret doing that, and therefore refuse to mention it again until the hotline 2 portion of this LP! Sorry boys and girls, get used to the idea.
IN GREATER DETAIL

BIKER VS JACKET: FIGHT OF THE CENTURY! So in this video, Jacket descends upon Phonehom to find the place just littered with dead bodies. Then he bashes Biker's skull in with a golf club. Okay cool. So Jaket won.

EXCEPT once you beat the rest of the game you're treated to a few epilogue chapters starring the biker. And sure enough, biker eventually make it to PhoneHom where he... kills the shit out of Jacket.

So only one of them could have actually happened, right? Well in hotline 2, Jacket's trial is the center of a media circus and he's very much alive, so I guess Jacket must have killed biker. So his version must be the real one.

Except no, because biker is alive and well too! You can find him in "The bar of broken heroes, where it's revealed he's still completely out of his goddamn mind, but in a more sad mopy way instead of the brutal kill murder way. Best guess is the fight happened more or less like jacket remembers it, but biker just got a nasy gash instead of having 3/4ers of his head ripped off.

HM1 CHAPTER 08 - PUSH IT

MAY 27TH 1989

PARTY PEOPLE
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
Perturbator - Miami Disco

We make another trip to the dark room, which astute viewers will notice has gotten more and more filthy every time we've dropped by. Then it's off to the club to party down!

If by party, you mean murder.

QUICK NOTES
  • LOL IMVU & FURAFINNITY. Truly the most beautiful internet paring there ever was. A match made in heaven.
  • SO THE DEAD GUY ON THE DISCO FLOOR NEAR THE ENTRANCE. That would be where the Carl mask would be if I hadn't already grabbed it. Guess they double-booked the DJ gig.
  • THIS IS THE FIRST LEVEL WHERE YOU CAN CHOOSE THE ORDER IN WHICH YOU TACKLE THE ROOMS I take the southeast exit that goes upstairs first because it's way, way easier than the the southwest one which goes into the giant dancefloor in the basement.
  • THE DANCEFLOOR CAN GO RIGHT TO HELL. Seriously. That fucking room.
  • THE AFTER LEVEL CONVENIENCE STORE SEQUENCE GETS... WEIRD. The screen starts wigging out with static, and beard straight up tells you that what you think is happening and what's actually happening aren't really lining up. "What you saw just now did not actually happen." Huh! wonder what that means!
IN GREATER DETAIL

IT MEANS JACKET IS OUT OF HIS GODDAMN MIND. No really? Wow, tell us something we don't know.
OKAY FINE, IT'S A HINT AT THE EVENTUAL REVEAL THAT JACKET IS IN A COMA, AND THAT HE'S GETTING THE DETAILS WRONG. That's more like it! The most obvious of which is that biker's head is not really split into pieces, and that he could sill be alive out there, but it also throws into question everything jacket's memory is haphazardly throwing together. This isn't the only time beard hints to something before the game shows us it outright. San Francisco, and the death of Hooker are other examples.

HM1 CHAPTER 09 - CRACKDOWN

MAY 31TH 1989

LAWMEN
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Crystals
M|O|O|N - Release

Hey, isn't it kinda weird that we've stacked enough bodies to fill a churchyard, but the police have never once shown up?

Turns out the police thought that was weird too.

QUICK NOTES
  • TAKE A MOMENT TO NOTICE HOW JACKET'S APARTMENT HAS CHANGED. In the first few levels it was kind of a total pigsty, garbage bags and empty pizza boxes all over the place. Ever since hooker moved in the place has been significantly cleaner. Just a little detail indicating the stabilizing effect she's having on his life.
  • THE POOL CUE IS ACTUALLY A PRETTY UNIQUE WEAPON. It can only be used twice, the first time it breaks in half. The second time Jacket will use the piece he's still holding as a stabbing weapon. It only shows up on pool tables, which I think there are only like two or three of in the whole game.
  • THIS WAS RECORDED THE SAME NIGHT I MADE DINNER DATE. Which is why it keeps coming up. Obviously you've already read, watched, commented on, and liked and shared to facebook every part of that particular let's play, so it merits no further discussion.
  • WE ALSO TALK ABOUT BAD RATS. Which you clearly have ALSO already fully enjoyed so I don't even need to link it oh my how did that get there WATCH MY FUCKING VIDEOS GOD DAMN YOU.
  • THE COPS SHOW UP AND EVERYTHING CHANGES. You can start hearing the sirens after you score the first few kills on the second floor. a few more kills and "chapter clear" suddenly shows up all unannounced. All the mobsters put their weapons down and surrender, the red light of a police sniper starts shining through the bottom windows (And yes, it WILL kill you) and the police start to pour into the building. The route I took lets me off the remaining enemies, because I am a PROFESSIONAL, and I GET SHIT DONE, but you don't actually have to take them out to leave. I think you can kill the police just like you kill everyone else but I've never actually tried past knocking down that one guy on my trip back through the first floor.
  • JACKET'S AFTER-MISSION STOPS ARE NOW VERY, VERY UNPLEASANT. Before we even enter the Pizzeria we get bitched out by a vision of one of our brutally murdered victims and his dog. Once inside we see that Beard is lying on the floor dead, and replacing him at the counter is an unfriendly bald fellow. Who is he? Check out the in greater detail spoilerpop to find out!
  • I NORMALLY CUT THE VIDEO RIGHT AS IT TRANSITIONS TO THE NEXT LEVEL BUT THIS TIME I DIDN'T. Why? Because I could not bring myself to edit out Maflare's farewell kiss. Shit like that is priceless.
IN GREATER DETAIL
THE DUDE AT THE REGISTER IS RICHTER, AND HIS REPLACING BEARD IS IMPORTANT. I'll have a lot more to say about exactly who Richter is, and what makes him such an anomaly in a game as full of violent killers as this one, but for right now let's just focus on how he and Beard exists in Jacket's hazy, not-entirely reliable dream-slash-memory.

Beard is nice to Jacket on levels that are just blatantly unrealistic. He always has Jacket's favorite thing waiting for him the moment he comes by, never charges him for it, and sees him off with a smile and words of encouragement. That's because this version of him is a wish-fulfillment character. He exists to fulfill any desire Jacket has, while telling Jacket "Bro you are just AWESOME" all the while. A perfect fantasy best friend.

But as the dream comes closer to it's inevitable end, that perfect fantasy friend is replaced by someone who acts much like any other tired overworked cashier. Richter doesn't care about making Jacket feel good about himself. He never gives him any free stuff, and he doesn't really even seem to recognize or know him. Jacket is just another annoying customer that Richter has to deal with at the end of a long shift. He seems mean when compared to Beard, but really he's just realistic, and I think that's the whole point.

In Jacket's fantasy, Richter is reality creeping in at the edges. He takes away the kindness Jacket wants, and replaces it with the indifference of the real world. He's a sign that the time for make-believe is over, and that Jacket will soon have to deal with the hostility of the real world once again.

HM1 CHAPTER 10 - HOT & HEAVY

JUNE 3RD 1989

SPA ATTENDANTS
FanBoyMaster - Smiler - Phat - Stush - Patito - Nodal
SOUNDTRACK
Jasper Byrne - Hotline

In which we storm what appears to be some sort of sauna, that just so happens to have one of the most aggrivating floors in the entire game.

It's got NOTHING on Hotline 2 though. You'll see.

QUICK NOTES
  • THE COMMENTARY GETS SUPER UNFOCUSED SUPER QUICK. This will be a running theme for the next few videos. I blame myself, which is to say I blame every person on the call. That said, given how bad this level can get, it would have been absolutely cruel to demand SUPER FOCUSED COMMENTARY because oh my god.
  • MEET JAKE! Around 3:45 you can find his corpse lying on the floor of the northmost room, right where they left him.. This is how I would've gotten the cobra mask was I not playing on new game + mode.
  • WELCOME TO MOST HATED MAP IN THE GAME. the first three maps in this level are standard hotline Miami fare, which makes the third seem even worse. I've seriously spent over an hour on it on some ill-fated streams. It's a lethal combination of long hallways, tons of enemies with guns, and dogs that run from the top or bottom of the screen at approximately mach 3. It is the official point at which the game is no longer fucking around.
  • FANBOYMASTER KNOWS SO MUCH ABOUT WRESTLING. Where did he get all this info oh my god.
  • ANOTHER DEAD BEARD SIGHTING. I already spoke at length about the significance of that in the last spoilerpop so... I dunno... go read it again or whatever.

Oh God, the last time I remember seeing "Cyber" in a TV show title was on a rebroadcast of this, where they changed it to "Cyber C.O.P.S."

That was...mid 90's, I think?

HM1 CHAPTER 11 - DEADLINE

JUNE 8TH 1989

IN THE BACK OF THE VAN
FanBoyMaster - MagFlare - Smiler - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
M|O|O|N - Hydrogen
M|O|O|N - Release

In which we're all just talking about wrestling while I play a video game. Storming some kinda office or something. No big deal. Nothing really happening here- OH GOD DEATHVAN.

QUICK NOTES
  • THE TWO BEDS IN JACKET'S BEDROOM ARE NOW PUSHED TOGETHER. You can only see it for a second at the start of the video, so keep those eyes open. Guess he and hooker are getting pretty serious!
  • THE DISTURBING VISIONS FROM THE LAST FEW AFTER LEVEL BITS ARE NOW SHOWING UP IN JACKET'S HOME. Nothing to start the morning right like getting screamed at by a horribly mutilated corpse.
  • CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. Phone's acting up, huh?
  • THE FIRST ROOM OF THIS LEVEL IS PRETTY ROUGH. I'm bad with pistols and and the glass walls aren't making this any easier for me. I don't even know how many times I died here.
  • FANBOY KNOWS SO, SO MUCH ABOUT WRESTLING. I don't even know who any of these guys he's talking about are!
  • SKIP TO 6:25 FOR SUDDENLY VEHICULAR HOMICIDE. I die a bunch but honestly this boss took me a lot less time than I thought it would! That said, once the fight is over, well…
  • THE WAY JACKET KILLS THE SURRENDERING ENEMY IS ESPECIALLY UPSETTING. I can understand not letting him live, sure, But Jacket doesn't just kill this guy. He breaks his arms and legs, then burns him alive. This is what I was talking about his actions alienating the player back in the Chapter 4 spoilerbox. You might wanna go back and read that pretty soon.
  • WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU LOOKING AT? Cough.

HM1 CHAPTER 12 - TRAUMA

JUNE 21ST 1989

ORDERLIES
Smiler - FanboyMaster - StushCinta - Phat - Nodal - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
Scattle - Flatline

Wake up sleepyhead

QUICK NOTES
  • LET'S GET THIS OVER WITH. Jacket gets home from the last mission to find the door wide open. Hooker is lying dead on the bathroom floor. Her killer, A man in a rat mask is sitting on the couch like he owns the place, and when you talk to him, he nonchalantly shoots Jacket in the chest. Press R to Restart.
  • LOOKS LIKE IT'S ONLY YOU AND ME LEFT NOW. Suddenly Jacket's in his room. The music and lighting indicates that you're in for another meeting with the masked trio, but this time Don Juan and Rasmus are nowhere to be seen. Only Richard remains, sitting in the same spot as your attacker. Jacket's body lies on the floor right where he left it, slowly bleeding out.
  • I'LL LET YOU IN ON A LITTLE SECRET. Richard lays down the law in his typical enigmatic manner. He tells Jacket that this won't end well, and that he'll soon be all alone. He follows that up by saying that everything he does next will be meaningless, that he'll never really understand what's been happening, and that he has no one to blame but himself.
  • YOU LOOK LIKE YOU COULD USE SOME REST. As Jacket slowly walk across the hall to the "Warm Bed" Richard spoke of, a flash of static replaces his sprite with one wearing a hospital gown and covered in bandages. Sure enough, the door on the other side of the hallway takes us to a hospital room, where Jacket finds his own comatose body lying in the bed.
    He's asleep right now.
He's been asleep the whole time.
But it's time to wake up.
  • JACKET "WAKES UP" BY EXPLODING HIS DREAM SELF'S HEAD. Because Hotline Miami I mean come on.
  • OKAY NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT THE ACTUAL LEVEL. Trauma is completely unlike all the other levels in the game. Instead of running around all crazy as an incredibly proficient murderer, you hobble slowly from room to room trying to avoid being seen by by hospital staff and police. Due to a combination of traumatic injury, loads of medication, and that whole "Just woke up from a coma" thing, you move very slowly, and get progressively dizzier with every step taken until everything goes white and Jacket falls to his knees and rests for a moment. In terms of merging gameplay and story it's brilliant and I love it. In terms of actually playing it, it sucks and I hate it.
  • I TAKE THE HARD ROUTE, BUT ONLY BECAUSE I HAD NO IDEA THERE WAS A BETTER WAY. The path I take is just walking down the main hallway past two wandering doctors at the exact right moment so neither of them see you. I go this way because in the three years I've been playing this game, it never once occurred to me to go just a little bit north, where I'd find a keycard with a big old arrow pointing at it, which I could then use on the locked door that another big old arrow points at and breeze through the northern rooms in relative safety. That's the intended way through the level, and I seriously didn't even know it existed until I checked some wikis to do this writeup.
  • THE LITTLE LEVEL-END BIT WHERE IT'S NORMALLY TREES AND BUILDINGS ZIPPING BY IS NOW SLOW AND LABORIOUS. I think that's a nice touch.
Wow BEAT those quick notes weren't very quick at all! Good things you covered everything you could possibly want to cover with them and have no need to do an in greater detail segment about spoilery stuff!

Oh fuck you.

IN GREATER DETAIL
RICHARD CAN'T STOP TALKING SHIT. most of what he says here is pretty self-explanatory. There's no possible way a 3-month campaign of brutal murder could possibly "end well", now that Hooker is dead Jacket is very obviously "all alone", etc etc. But one line sticks out to me as deserving special attention:

"WHAT YOU DO FROM HERE ON, WON'T SERVE ANY PURPOSE."

Why is that line so important? Well for the last three months Jacket has murdered countless people just because his answering machine thought it would be cool. He has no idea who's telling him to do these things, or why they want him to do them. He doesn't stand to gain anything from this rampage, or have any personal motivation to want to kill those people. He's just mindlessly following orders with no thought as to why. As far as he (and the player) are concerned, there is no purpose behind his actions up to this point.

But that all changes when Jacket escapes from the hospital, which is the first meaningful choice he's made in the entire game. From this point onward he's done blindly following the commands of a disembodied voice. He's on his own mission, setting out on his own terms to get his own answers and accomplish his own goals. The game is now a personal quest for revenge upon those who used him, hurt him, and robbed him of the only person he truly cared about. He (and the player) have a sense of purpose for the very first time!

So what's Richard going on about with this "won't serve any purpose" shit? Is old Chickenface mistaken, or intentionally lying to us?

Turns out it's neither. Richard is a lot of things (a hallucination, a guide, a superego, maybe even a god) but he's never wrong and he never lies.

Jacket's revenge, in addition to being a pointless gesture, ends up being completely misguided as well. He never finds the force that actually killed Hooker, and never comes any closer to understanding where the phone calls were really coming from, much less what was actually going on. His newfound purpose is purposeless.

HM1 CHAPTER 13 - ASSAULT

JUNE 21ST 1989

THE LAW
Smiler - FanboyMaster - StushCinta - Phat - Nodal - Patito
SOUNDTRACK
Scattle - Knock Knock

In which a man who just came out of a coma who could barely walk a few seconds ago somehow manages shred through an entire police station, just to get to one guy.

QUICK NOTES
  • I AM REALLY, REALLY BAD AT THIS LEVEL. 17 Minute video. Oh my god. Absolutely disgusting.
  • COMMENTARY WHAT COMMENTARY. It's a really long level you guys. Enjoy the SKYPE CREW shooting the shit about wrestling, old cartoons and planning outerheaven casts like it's my Bad Rats lp all over again.
  • IN MY DEFENSE THE LAST FLOOR IS ACTUALLY PRETTY HARD. But really it's something I know exactly how to deal with and has much less chance of offscreen death out of nowhere than the last room in Hot & Heavy. I'm just careless and stupid.
  • WHAT THE HELL THAT GUY WAS STILL ALIVE?! Fuck you! All your friends are dead!
  • THE MAN WE'RE HERE TO SEE IS RICHTER AKA THE MAN IN THE RAT MASK THAT SHOT JACKET, AKA THE LESS NICE CLERK FROM THE DREAM. Instead of fighting or begging for his life he just apologizes for what he did to Jacket, and gives him all the information he has. Including a bombshell in the form of a qustion:
  • HAVE YOU ALSO BEEN GETTING THOSE WEIRD PHONECALLS? Gee, I wonder what that could mean?!
  • YOU HAVE THE OPTION TO KILL RICHTER, OR LET HIM LIVE. Not a lot of guys Jacket goes after get that opportunity! Richter himself doesn't even expect you to take it. That said, I let him live because I'm nice like that.
