Cross-Forum Fervor! Let's Play The Sims 3!

When I saw the trailer for Tomodachi Life, I joked that I'd Let's Play it as soon as it was out. This is a joke mainly because I wouldn't be able to get the game, didn't own the system it's for, and don't have any way of recording anything but a screenshot LP off my PC.

But my wife reminded me we already have a copy of Sims 3 kicking around. So sure, Let's Play The Sims 3.


Sims 4 is gonna be out in September, so it's almost topical again.

The Sims 3 is a fantasy lifestyle simulator. I don’t mean “fantasy” in the sense that the game has time travel or vampires — though there are expansion packs for those — I mean “fantasy” in the sense that it’s possible to have a rewarding career and afford to own a home. Do ho ho ho! Social commentary.

Anyway.

Player characters in The Sims are virtual people, living their virtual lives. They work at jobs, they buy things decorate their homes, they cook, they scrub toilets, they develop relationships, they have children, they grow up and grow old.

So the first step to this Let's Play is character generation, and I'll be basing those characters on you! Reply in this thread with a bit of information to apply.

Furthermore! I'll be posting the same application thread on the Brontoboards and, erm, to a Tumblr I've genned for this purpose. I'll be running three concurrent Let's Plays, with different characters from different communities, and the highest Lifetime Achievement score at the end of the game wins! It's a cross-community competitive LP!



Gonna app? The character information I need from you is this:

• Name: First and last name, like you'd expect. Invoke your username somehow in the character's first name so everyone knows who you are, even if you get married and your last name changes.
• Are you male or female? There aren't any nonbinary options so choose whichever you present as. (All this determines is whether you can get pregnant or stand up to pee, anyway.)
• Pick five Traits.
• Choose a Lifetime Wish based on your Traits.
• There's a section in chargen for your favorite Music, Color, and Food, if you wish to be so thorough.

Most of the character generation options are appearance-based, and I have no idea what most of you look like. Send me or link me a picture and I'll do my best. If you're internet-shy that's cool too, but you'll end up with a randomized look.

I'll be taking five characters from here on Talking Time, enough to reasonably fill a house with a little room for people to get hitched and move their spouses in. I'll be closing applications... eh, let's call it Monday, 8/4/14. The LP will begin shortly thereafter.

You posted while I was typing mine and I love that I went for most of the same traits. But yes, I want to be a Mad Scientist all the way.

The top level of the Science career track is actually called "Mad Scientist", whether you make it a lifetime goal of it or not. Mixing the Science career and the Tinkerer Lifetime Wish is a pretty broad application of skills, but we'll get to that after applications are in.

Nice! And yeah, I'll definitely have to get a better idea of the mechanics and details. Excited for this.

Whenever I play a new Sims game I always include Mario & Luigi. However, you got enough requests as it is. I second Wily.

You know what? Whether you run with that suggestion or not, I am busting out this free copy of Sims 2, and I am populating an entire town with Mega Man characters, sharing houses by game at least initially, maybe later eventually moving into their own theme-y lairs. Might work better in 3, but meh, I don't have a giant pile of dumb expansions there.

So great.

The game is version 1.0 (compared to the "current" 1.6), with no mods and no expansions. The more I fool around with patches, updates, or new content, the crash-to-desktop-ier and system-freeze-ier the game gets.

You'd expect games to get more stable with patches rather than less, but... well...

Please, please, please, please make BEAT. The stuff you can do with the character creator in this game will surely make a hilarious and terrifying skeleton. There is no budging here, the BEAT must go on.

Yeah, you have to make BEAT. Maybe I'm misunderstanding stuff because I thought you just wanted sims from us to populate a virtual neighborhood and not just characters to play.

After the outcry to have a real skeleman in the game, I went to look at the mod, and...

It's for The Sims 2, ya knucklehead.

That's perfectly fine. His skeleton can be his secret, the secret the world is not ready for...yet.

Looking at the traits has been interesting. Brontos are more likely to describe themselves as Bookworms and Geniuses (and a lot of them are struggling to get published). Tyrants would sooner call themselves Evil or Inappropriate, but with a Good Sense of Humor about things.
