Default McDohl's Video LPs of Excessively Critical Science

Spinning off the discussion from the Great LPs thread, where my video DOESN'T belong.

Here's the playlist.

A running list of the worlds I've played, and lost, except for the latest one.

Roguecraft 1:
Roguecraft 2: A Bloo Bloo Bloo
Roguecraft 3: Dammit Percy
Roguecraft 4: 404
Roguecraft 5: Unreleased, because I'm saving it for Sweeps Week.
Roguecraft 6: suavebaby
Roguecraft 7: 1736813803934715730
Roguecraft 8: xXSephirothXx
Roguecraft 9: Angband
Roguecraft 10: It Is A Good Day to Die
Roguecraft 11: McDohl_sucks_at_Minecraft
Roguecraft 12: Flapjack Fields
Roguecraft 13: carameldansen

Post new seeds, and make fun at how bad I am at Minecraft, or you can send them to me on Twitter @dohlbomber

Re: my most recent off-screen death: I was looking for iron underground so I could make some armor, when I got sniped by a skeleton off the ledge I was on, and in to about three more.

So xXSephirothXx land is gone forever.

I got a suggestion on one of the videos to start naming my worlds after Roguelikes. So I'll start with the next one this afternoon with "Angband".

You could maybe link your videos for the people who aren't psychic.

So basically this thread is just like your Minecraft worlds: a massive failure.

Personally I think we should let you select your own seeds. Not with your knowledge of course, just taking random things you say during the videos and making them into worlds. With that in mind, I tested a couple of ideas to see what it would get you.

Easy mode seed: A billion freaking sheep
Hard mode seed: What is with all these sheep?

Have you used 404 yet? You should use 404.

And make sure that the first thing you do is get a lot of sand. Sand is awesomely useful.

Roguecraft 4 (world 4, not video 4) was 404. Ironically enough, Roguecraft 5 appears to be, you know, not found. Seems to go from 4 to 6 in the videos.

A handy dandy list of used seeds:

Roguecraft 1:
Roguecraft 2: A Bloo Bloo Bloo
Roguecraft 3: Dammit Percy
Roguecraft 4: 404
Roguecraft 6: suavebaby
Roguecraft 7: 1736813803934715730
Roguecraft 8: xXSephirothXx

We don't talk about Roguecraft 5.

Yes, it was a clear oversight on my part. I was hoping nobody would notice.

Here's a link to the playlist.

(bonus points: the last 4 characters in the URL is "lolz")

Two things, McDohl:

1) Instead of doing stuff off camera, and risking losing interesting footage (like deaths), why not just record everything and throw away the uninteresting things (like mining)?

2) Get VirtualDub (or something) and use it to crop the Windows title bar and border out of the videos.

Then your videos will be more fun to watch!

I agree, it would be better to just editing the bland stuff out.

For recording I've been using fraps, not only will it record Minecraft without having to worry about window borders, it will also record your mic input onto the video as well. As for editing, I just use Windows Movie Maker... not really the best choice but it works.

I've been playing a bit of Roguecraft Gaiden, under the same rules McDohl is using (Harcdore, no F3) and I've identified the hardest part of the early game: getting enough iron to make enough armor so skeletons can't kill you outright. You can gather resources on the top all you want but at some point you need iron to progress.

The safest way is probably to just travel light on the surface until you find enough exposed iron to make a suit, then go underground.

Skellies are way more dangerous than creepers.

I've got another episode in the can, ready to be uploaded this afternoon. After that, I think I'll try to record a long session and figure out how to cross-fade stuff in Camtasia. Brickroad, any advice?

Jungles are a mess. Just how much of a tree do you need to cut down before the whole thing dies? How lucrative would it be to clear out some space around your tree-house?

Well, I do need to think about a renewable source of food. A wheat farm might be in order.

Just spent about two hours getting a foothold in Roguecraft Gaiden III. I have determined these to be the most important resources to get on Day One:

1) Sheep.
2) Chickens.

If there aren't any in your starting area, your best bet is to get your early stuff together (stone tools, stack of wood, some torches), make a boat, and set sail. Skirt the coastlines until you find a pack of each animal.

Once you have some wool you can make a bed, which trivializes resource gathering on the surface. Make yourself a little cubby, wait for night to fall, then plunk down your bed and sleep. When you wake up you'll have a much easier time picking off the roaming creepers and spiders. In this way you can make a bow really easily.

Once you have some feathers, go hunting for gravel and make as many arrows as you can. Your dungeon delving will be a lot safer now.

Next you need iron. It's best if you start near a ravine, of course, but if you don't you can get about the same effect by doing some "light spelunking". That is, go into a cave a short ways, lighting it as you go, until the terrain gets dangerously complex. Then leave and go find another cave. You should be able to amass a set of iron armor and tools this way.

That's about as far as I've made it. I've been taking a snail approach: go slow, be careful, and carry your home on your back. I haven't had much need or desire to establish a base yet. Chances are you're going to have to abandon whatever you build when you start hunting endermen anyway.

Remember, you can make wool out of spider silk. Sheep, while nice, aren't entirely necessary.

By the way, the easiest way to hunt endermen is to use flint and steel to light the ground around them on fire. They don't react at all when they walk through flame.

But it's way easier to find a couple sheep than it is to find lots of spiders. And once you have wool, finding spiders becomes a lot easier. Remember that you can sit in a boat, safely, forever. In fact, I'd advocate doing some early sailing anyway, just to find some cliffs or mountains that increase your chances of finding exposed (or at least shallow) iron.

I'm working on the post-production of Roguecraft 17. I think I might have to do something a little different in recording my stuff in Camtasia, rendering it, and then doing the actual editing in Sony Vegas. I'm giving it a whirl now, and should be uploaded this evening, as I have work today.

Edit: fired and forgot the upload just before leaving for work. It's up, and I was able to view it on my phone.

Yes, I know something massively dicked up when I final rendered this thing. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to rush it out the door as I was...er, rushing out the door this morning.

I would like to reiterate this. It is probably quite a bit more editting for you, however. I like the highlight reel approach, only recording when you say something interesting or find something exciting, but as it is right now I skip through your video until you aren't mining any more, I only watch about 2 or 3 minutes.

Also, was everybody else just waiting for him to walk into lava in Roguecraft 1? I'm sure we all saw it coming, but couldn't help you at all. Hilarious.

Roguecraft isn't dead, guys!

I briefly touch on why my production slowed down in a thing I just uploaded, Roguecraft Gaiden.

Here, I demonstrate some of the techniques I intend to use in actual Roguecraft, the foremost being a device known only as the Zombotron.
