I was referring to the WSJ's first reports about Pewdiepie, as well as the followups in which Disney publically disowned him. I believe that was when advertisers started to wise up to what exactly Maker Studios and the other big "influencers" were letting slip through the cracks.

I went looking for a link for Mogri earlier, but the Wall Street Journal is one of those that wants a subscription before they let you read back articles online.

Google "wall street journal pewdiepie" for the gist if you don't want to sign up for a subscription.

I thought it was ridiculous in the 60s X-Men comics when Magneto called his group The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Who would call themselves evil?! And yet here we are.

Hell nah. I was shocked drama jumped off here at all. This is literally the most peaceful place on the internet for me.

My wife asked me what was going on on the internet this morning when I was on my PC reading TT. I told her "I don't know, I don't really go to most of the internet."

This place is good overall, yes, but I'm a little uncomfortable with people saying how "peaceful" it is considering several women were driven out of here for reasons I would call "not peaceful"

Yeah, I'm generally very happy with this place, and it's really been so much more than a dumb video game forum to me.

But, like, for instance... when I was like "hey please don't make jokes about murdering 'crossdressers', this is a thing I need to be afraid of in real life" in the 4JF thread, I would have appreciated if more folks chose to stand up for me rather than just being "peaceful", which makes the thread a welcoming place for the jokester but not for me.

I apologize, I didn't mean to imply the mods failed in some way. I don't really know what else mods could have done in that particular case, it's more a question of cultivating a culture of actively speaking up. Which we're doing! But, you know, eternal vigilance and all that.

If I'm out of line I can delete that stuff. My intent isn't to call anyone in particular out or be passive aggressive here, but like... it was a weird unsettling experience I had that required a lot of people to ignore what I had said, and I'd like to encourage people to more actively reject that kind of thing as a community.

Looking back at that conversation, three people called that person out, and then they edited the post when called out on it. I was bothered by it too, but also I felt like a fourth call out post would have just been a pile on.

Now, it turns out you were one of those three people, so to you it probably felt like only two people... But as someone reading the thread three call outs followed by a correction felt like people were speaking out and the poster in question was listening? (It deserved a better apology, though...)

I don't mean to say you're wrong, just giving an outsider's perspective on why people might have been hesitant to add a fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. call out post.

They didn't make a real apology, and when I tried to talk about why I was so uncomfortable to try to get them to understand what they had said, they responded with a joke ignoring that part of my post, and everyone else dropped it. That's the point at which I would have appreciated some backup, and that's what made it feel like the thread was for them, not me.

As an outsider, to me it seemed like the thread made it clear that that behavior was unacceptable. I also thought they should not just edit it but also apologize . . . but I wasn't sure if it was appropriate to create a pile-on for behavior that was established as unacceptable and then removed after criticism.

Again, I'm not trying to say you are wrong, just saying that as an outsider it looked like the criticism was clear and responded to, even if the poster was not exactly contrite. I'm not exactly sure if I should have said more or not...

Even when there's bad behavior, generally mod behavior is to discourage pile-ons/call-outs repeating the same criticism, so I thought I should not reiterate what three others had said and the user removed, even if the apology was non-existent.

I mean, I figured it was something like that. But I think saying "lol berserkers" in response to me saying I was afraid of being murdered seems like new bad behavior and no one touched it.

Ultimately, going forward they kept posting happily and I didn't.

I remember seeing that (the initial comment) and beginning to type a response but I didn't post it. I wasn't sure that I was the right person to comment there, and I was glad to see that a few people jumped in. In general I'm trying to get away from reactionary argumentative posts, but maybe that's a place where it would have been warranted. I don't remember the later comment, and I'm sorry that you didn't feel supported.

It seems like this is the general sentiment, which I appreciate and which is better than the alternative!

This is the key detail here. I can understand the moderators' concern that call-outs may lead to dogpiling and telling people to fuck off en masse, which probably isn't conducive to maintaining a good forum, but there still needs to be a culture of solidarity and of having members' backs beyond just "letting the moderators deal with it" or appealing to forum rules if people are to feel safe, welcome, wanted, etc. Staying quiet until the ban-hammer falls can be an inadequate and cowardly response...

(Of course, that's easy for me to say as someone who misses 99% of beefs on here due to time zone differences and attentive moderation.)

I think it would be good to champion the mod talk forum here and help people feel more comfortable going to the mods, and also figuring out what is and isn't acceptable regarding what you'd call a pile on. I feel like I already have a habit of showing up out of nowhere in threads I don't actively participate in when things get heated so I'm trying to pick my battles now; but I also definitely feel like there's some bystander effect going on where I didn't want to be part of a pile on when other people already said things, which is bullshit because I shouldn't ever stand down when it comes to real shit, while not arguing over how much I hate class x in game y for the 7th time is okay.

I feel like I should have said something on the issues forum when I agreed that what was said was really not acceptable, and I want to support anyone who feels unsafe to even do that in doing so too.

The points made here are valid, and I'm writing up a post to further this discussion with the other mods.

Please remember if you have any problems or want to alert us to a thread (I read alot of posts here, but no one person can read everything), the Private Feedback forum is completely anonymous and only moderation staff can read any member's thread.

We have been doing our best to improve the board. And I feel it's important to note that this is essentially the best community I've seen on the internet.

It's still a community that has had serious problems. Recently, even.

I know both the moderation team and forum members themselves continue to strive for better. And we will persevere.
