Gamerscom stream - the framerate is still pretty dire and it confirms that the characters are really chatty in combat. Perhaps the framerate would be a bit better if they had just left it at three person parties instead of six? They do explain what all the various nonsense on the screen means.

Every character can equip three Blades, and every Blade has three arts + an elemental art. Elemental arts can be chained to produce special effects. This information is relayed to the player via a handy flowchart in the top right of the screen, because this is Xenoblade and Xenoblade is all about that UI clutter.

See in this instance Fire -> Fire -> Fire will seal the enemy's ability to self-destruct.

(The Anchor Shot art will pull HP Potions out of the enemies, touching a HP Potion will restore the party's HP)

By mapping Arts/Blades to specific buttons on the controller, the player no longer has to spend time navigating that cumbersome Arts Bar from previous games.

HP and combo bar are where they always are.

Context sensitive bars appear at the top to show you how long a debuff is gonna last on the enemy (so like, Break will pop up at the top when you Break an enemy and the bar will decrease to show you how long they'll remain Break'd and as such how long you'll have to inflict Topple; or in the case of Elemental Arts it'll pop up to show you what Chains you can do). It adds Strategy and Depth and Helps You Learn To Read Because Reading Is Fundamental!

Boy. That's really gonna be the framerate the whole game? It's like an N64 game or something...

It is looking like you won't ever be able to change the main character out of his idiotic outfit. This feels really rushed.

I'm still holding out hope, but with my luck it'll just be DLC costumes.

And comparatively, this is rushed. Chronicles came out four years into the Wii's life cycle (five in EU and six years in for NA!), X came out three years into the Wii U, but 2 is supposed to be within the first year of the Switch.

So half of the party members are Attackers and half are Blades, that's ok.

But some blades are unlockables that you get in a box?

And you can mix and match them with other blades?

Everybody is still yelling and pressing buttons?

??????????

I think I'm gonna pass on this one. I really find the character designs unappealing and the Direct today just didn't do anything to sell me on it. At least Pyra isn't the only one having to serve as a sword and they made a more dynamic mechanic out of it than I first thought. But it just made me utter ehhhhhhhhhhh. I actually forgot about it until now. XD

Your party members are Drivers.
Drivers equip up to three Personas Stands BLADES
Blades are obtained via Core Crystals, which seem to be a gatcha like feature except without the microtransactions, which seems like a weird choice because literally no one benefits from that but whatever
Blades determine a character's weapon and their skill set
It appears that most Blades are common types that look like generic robots, but you can also obtain rare types that have actual designs.
Ha, ha, remember 8-bit Theater, where Fighter really liked swords? Well I get the feeling our friend Rex is gonna really like swords, if you know what I mean!

Is it just me or is Pyra's chest considerable? It's like she's smuggling cantaloupes. Maybe they're not-so-secret weapons.

I suppose I should finish - well, start, actually - Xenoblade Chronicles 3D before this comes out.

Really not a fan of the anime aesthetics but I'll probably give XC2 a shot.

Have you seen/played Chronicles X? In my eyes this is a... shaky but not insignificant step up from that. Kinda makes me wonder why they completely jumped ship from the first Chronicles character art aesthetic. The oldest of the games on the most limiting hardware still has the best aesthetic.

The trope about people that are literal objects and sexualized for reasons? gives me a lot more pause than the general aesthetic. I have never encountered this trope in a way that makes me feel better than uneasy.

And with the dev time seeming so comparably short for this I'm worried it's gonna be another Star Ocean 5 situation. It still clearly has staple combat mechanics but... bad vibes all around.

Hopes being crushed by an intense struggle to be barely mediocre after abandoning most identifiable combat mechanics from the previous games. And having a really bad English dub.

i liked the first three star ocean games but "barely mediocre" is sort of the series standard

The first thing I thought of was microtransactions, but that seemed like something they would have mentioned, so I guess they aren't.

Yeah, this game's story and characters are just leaving me cold at best and uncomfortable at worst. I'm still going to get this because the crux of these games, to me, is the world geography, and I have no doubt it will once again be wonderful… but I've lowered my overall expectations.

Hopefully a charming British dub will make the storyline tolerable. (shrug)

Does it play great music while I explore beautiful landscapes? If so I'm still probably in, no matter how big the tittays on the anime sword girl are.

Yeah! It was also the game with characters talking about amazing space battles happening just outside the ship's window, because they couldn't afford to actually render and show them.

Same. the Xenoblade series, for all its faults, also offers pleasures that no other series offer in the same way or intensity.

I don't really have a problem with anime titties, or any titties, one way or another. (The most offensive thing to me is the anime, not the titties.) I just thought I was seeing things for a second but I Google'd it and, nope, not seeing things.

If Pyra isn't in the new Smash Bros., someone at Nintendo isn't doing their job.

I didn't have any interest until I saw some of the exploration elements. The battle system seems "meh" and I noticed there's a lot of shit on the screen.

That's a lot of UI elements. It would be great if you could size those down.

One of the bigger complaints aimed at XCX was that those elements couldn't be scaled up, so I'm kind of pleased with the change.

How friggin' weird is it that this is the most clean and easy-to-follow any Xeno game has ever been.

You fool, this isn't even the UI'd final form! Wait until the elemental trigger commands take up the bottom and sides of the screen, the elemental chain path appears on the top right, and status effects/seals appear over the enemy's nameplate
