So, I mean, I'm buying that. That's a thing that's happening. I've spent half that much before on shitty joysticks that plug in to your TV and have 2 games on them. As someone who is into retro gaming and is also into being lazy it is squarely in my wheelhouse.

EDIT: Also, wrong forum?

Well, this is unexpected. Pretty sure I'mma need to get me one of these.

Quote:
All of the games available to play on the console are listed below.

Balloon Fight
Bubble Bobble
Castlevania
Castlevania II: Simon's Quest
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Dr. Mario
Excitebike
Final Fantasy
Galaga
Ghosts N' Goblins
Gradius
Ice Climber
Kid Icarus
Kirby's Adventure
Mario Bros.
Mega Man 2
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Pac-Man
Punch-Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
StarTropics
Super C
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Tecmo Bowl
The Legend of Zelda
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
That's a great selection of games, and I'm really surprised at how many third-party titles are in there. But... Super C instead of Contra? :/

Two flaws:

1. No Ice Hockey or Blades of Steel. Therefore, zero units to be sold in Canada.

2. Excuse me while I weep yet again that they couldn't genericize Tecmo Super Bowl (presumably because of the graphics of the team logos being too baked into the code) and we're eternally stuck with Tecmo Bowl as a result.

If we're going to be reasonable with the selection (EG, no licensed games so no Capcom Disney / Batman / GI Joe games), I have few quibbles with the list other than that. Maybe NES Tournament Golf instead of, say, Galaga, but while I personally like Ninja Gaiden II more than the original I know the original's more iconic (for bad reasons).

This thread's placement in the TV/Film subforum is confusing. Where's my tiny-nes movie!

Not that I don't have a million ways to already play those games on my TV, but I'll probably buy one for aesthetics alone.

I am impressed with the selection of games. You'd expect it to be launch black-box games and that's all, so it's pretty cool. Still some weird omissions considering what's there. CV 1 and 2 but not 3. MM2 but not 3. Zelda 2 but not 3. Super C but not 3.

Um... how do I put this delicately...?

(CVIII I could see being tough because of the chip issues, even with the revised North American version of the game.)

Yeah, same. Honestly, I'd pay $60 just for a dedicated Final Fantasy I console. Everything else is just the most delicious gravy.

I don't want to be a "Gimme Gamer" but the idea occurred to me. Don't NES roms take 0 space? What's to stop every Nintendo published game from being on here? Why is 30 the cut off?

I'd be cynical and say Tiny NES v2, but if that were the plan then they certainly would have held some of these back.

Because then you won't buy the mini NES 2 with StarTropics 2, Contra, Castlevania III, Mega Man VI (that was the Nintendo-published one, right?), and Dragon Warrior III.

(If Mario 2 wasn't on this list I'd be SURE that was the plan.)

(Looks at list again)

(...)

I swear I've already had this reaction like 3 times. Every time I read through the list, there's just so much awesome that my eyes slide past things.

A bit bummed at the omission of Dragon Warrior, however, which I just noticed.

You guys, you're never getting Contra. It wasn't on the Wii, Wii U or 3DS and it won't be on here.

My thought would be this is a marketing stunt for the NX somehow, but not sure how getting lapsed gamers to play metroid again is going to turn into sales.

Contra has yet to be on any VC service; there must be some emulation issue with the VC or Konami's just too lazy nowadays to do anything with it (it was on Contra 4, so it clearly could be done somehow). Edit - NINJAS ON MY LAWN

If this tiny NES has some sort of expansion, I'll be all over this. The lineup is rock solid (Ice Climber is arguably the worst game on here, and it's not horrible), and I would play through almost all of this again with the saving options that come with the set. I also wouldn't need to buy any extra controllers thanks to the Classic Controllers for the Wii U and Wii I have lying around.

Hell I might buy it anyway listen to me

Two other notable points:

1. It looks like it'll have the soft save states like Virtual Console.

2.

Quote:
and a second controller can be purchased for $9.99.
I actually had to look at that twice, because I was sure they were going to try to bone consumers on second controllers by charging $30 or something.

My only regret is that a third port with NES plugs would've been appreciated for those of us who, say, keep an NES Advantage lying around....

EDIT: Contra is weird. As noted, the NES code definitely exists, it's popular enough, and they have no issues with the series showing up as long as it's not the original....

Oh, well, I guess Contra Force will be on the second iteration.

That Pac-Man is on the box cover tells you everything you need to know about Nintendo's target audience.

Ayup. I'm glad they actually threw people a bone with some of the newer games on the list. Usually when you think of Nintendo doing something like this, you count yourself lucky if they remember to include Mario 2 and 3 (Parish noted the absence of Urban Champion in his write-up, which brings to mind BASEBALL URBAN CHAMPION NEVAR FORGET).

I wonder how the controllers are going to work. It seems that they'll be corded, so I hope the new controllers have cords of ample length, but they also say that you can use the existing Wii Classic Controller, as evidenced by the design of that port, but the cord on that thing is like a foot long, isn't it? Do proprietary extension cables for this stuff exist?

From what I've read, you can pair a Wii remote with it and play that way.

Other than the HDMI port, I don't really see a point to a console that can only play 30 games (selected by the manufacturer, and many of them resoundingly "meh"). If the idea is to appeal to nostalgic fans who haven't played in decades, then aside from the HDMI the only thing it has over cheaper Famiclones like the RetroN is the marketing/visibility.

Now, if it had a cartridge port (meaning it actually had NES parts instead of just an emulator) then I'd definitely buy one. Been a long time since I played NG II or Quantum Fighter or Metal Storm on a decent display.

Marketing/visibility and ease of use. RetroN requires you to own cartridges, unless you know how to hack it, which is easy for us but a pain for anyone else. We're not the target market for this thing.
