Default Etrian Odyssey V is a real thing that's happening

Finally, some news!

Famitsu reveals that the game will be released, on the 3DS, on August 4th of this year.

The subtitle, 長き神話の果て, translates to something like, The End of the Long-Standing Myth.

There will be a Nico Nico livestream on March 5th, and more information in the March 17th issue of Famitsu.

This little tidbit promises all-new character classes and greater freedom in customizing your characters!

And as for me, I'm loving that purple-blue V!

I knew it was coming eventually. And I also knew that the longer they take between EO games, the better they generally are. So taking this long between EO4 and EO5 is good. That's how it felt for me when they took their time between EO2 and EO3.

New classes, new character customization, new ideas... all welcome.

EO4 is one of my favorite games ever.

I eagerly await more news about EO5.

I'm hoping that this is as wild and crazy as III was after IV's playing it very straight.

I'm also hoping grimores stay the hell out of the main series.

Couldn't agree more.

Also hoping for no voice acting, and no "story." Save that junk for the moe remakes.

I never played III! Only the first stratum of II and then all of IV (which I loved).

Actually, confession: I never beat the post-game dungeon all the way through, and I only slew one dragon...

After I kinda bounced off Persona Q, I started to wonder if I was all odysseyed out, but a new entry in the main series might still be worth checking out. I'll keep my eye on this one, though I don't think I'll pick it up at launch.

It appears there's a race system, with humans, elves, dwarfs, and beastmen, although each class appears to be restricted to one race, so it wouldn't seem to open up any character-building possibilities. Ten classes, with four for the humans and two each for the other three.

It appears that you can make your own recolorings instead of being restricted to 2-4 default ones, and you can give your characters voices if you want.

They appear to be harkening back to EO1, as the article specifically points out that subclasses and grimoires made it too easy to build a party that could do it all, and it'll be harder to do that this time.

At last!

Though I'm excited, I'm also disappointed that each class appears to be tied to a race. Not only does that remove some interesting customization possibilities, it also forces you to use portraits you dislike (I'm looking at you, dwarves).

To be fair; there's only been one portrait shown for each species.

I'm sure that there are proper dwarves and not, like, Keebler Elves

Two more dwarf portraits were shown in leaked Famitsu scans, and while one is okay, the other is pretty uncomfortable-looking. Still holding out hope for non-Keebler dwarves.

Per this article, you can freely combine gender, race, and class. There are a few race-specific skills as well as the usual class skills.

Quote:
Announced character classes:
Fencer
Dragoon
Cestus
Reaper
Necromancer
Warlock
Herbalist
Shaman
Hero
Hound
A few other details:

Quote:
  • Skin, hair, eye color can be changed with a palette of 10 colors to choose from. There are 40 different character voices to choose from.
  • The game is fully voiced, with an option to turn off voices.
  • Dungeons have random encounter symbols, similar to how F.O.E. enemies have their own symbols. Conventional mapping remains in the bottom screen.
  • Dungeons and events have evolved to be considered more like a “TRPG” (tabletop-style RPG).
  • The game’s development is 60% complete, with it having reached a point where it can be played from beginning to end.
I'm not sure about the TRPG stuff and random encounter symbols, but a lot of this sounds really intriguing.

That perks my interest up a bit. We've had a lot of EO games using the same formula, so if they want to play with the mechanics a bit, I'd say that's a good thing.

I'll take the loss of subclasses if it keeps grimores out (though, really, IV's subclass system was pretty much perfect).

No, I totally get it, I only said it to lead into the whitetext joke beneath it, which was kind of silly. I think it would actually be disconcerting to show all the interactions!

That's not what the scans in the link say.

Classes are restricted to specific races. There are also race specific skills, that everyone from a specific race will have, regardless of class. But (at least as of now) a human can't be one of the elf looking classes, for example.

The main customization addition is more granular color scheme customization and the ability to pick a voice actor.

Beware the game of Famitsu scan telephone.

This also appears to be based on a reading comprehension mistake by the linked site:

Quote:
Dungeons have random encounter symbols, similar to how F.O.E. enemies have their own symbols.
The passage in question is just describing the standard EO system that will also be in this game: There are random encounters, but there are visible FOEs. No switch to symbol encounters.

This does not appear to be a good site to go to for translations of breaking news. I would not recommend it.

I actually totally misread TRPG as Tactical RPG. More Pen & Paper style interaction is cool.

I saw that all races/classes thing reported in a number of places. I guess it was all from the same source.

Many of the most frequently cited sites for Famitsu scan information are frequently very bad at reading/translating Japanese and too often fail to cite/link sources (tending to post unreadable thumbnails of scans), which unfortunately means that a lot of bad information is spread around quickly until larger images crop up.

Oh, there's another cute tidbit I saw mistranslated at both Gematsu and Siliconera:

The original sentence is:

This says you can name the pets Hounds use! Woo-hoo. A class where you get to name your pets changes everything.

Friends don't let friends trust breaking Famitsu scans posted on Siliconera or Gematsu.

Super excited about this! Sad that it seems that there won't be subclasses Hopefully they introduce something new to make up for it.

However, that class list looks super interesting.

Tabletop elements make this really attractive to me. I'm slightly wary about putting so much time into another EO game after putting ~90 into EO4 over the years, but a well done DM-type feature would probably be enough for me to dive in.

It seems there may be gaming life in these bones in a post-Dark Souls 3 and Zelda U world.

I'm just hoping that some of these different classes legitimately fulfill different roles than the typical EO classes do. Like Fencer pretty clearly is similar to Landsknecht, but it'd be great if Cestus is the pure melee bruiser class, like EO3's Gladiator wound up being.

Also possibly a mistranslation, but apparently the pets/minions summoned by Necromancers don't take up party slots, allowing you to have more than 1 out at a time. Possibly the same deal for the Hound class, if they have more than 1 pet.

At least based upon the short descriptions I saw of each class, it sounds like the standard 4 of any EO game (Landsknecht, Protector, Medic, Alchemist) are roughly copied over to Fencer, Dragoon, Herbalist, and Warlock.

One thing I noticed was that there are no obvious gun- or bow-users in the lineup, so it looks like the back row is going to be all about casting and summoning this time around.
