I thought you could only upgrade bonfires to 10 until the late late game, at which point you get an item that lets you bump it up to 15?

Seems like a pretty important thing to get right so that new players don't waste humanities.

The starting max is 10. Once you get the correct item (which you can get almost immediately), the max is 20. There are a couple pre-upgraded bonfires, too.

1) No. The only thing you can do is take a humanity, which is the number next to your life bar, and spend one to "unhollow" and then another to "kindle" a bonfire, which will give you 10 flasks instead of 5. Any bonfire that has a "firekeeper" will also give you 10 right off the bat (Firelink is the first but there are 2 more). Humanity is an item you can find as well, but having the item doesn't work. Using the item is what gives you one humanity (the number next to your bars). It's weird.

Eventually you can kindle multiple times, and get up to 20 flasks. I'll often do that at Firelink since it's already at 10. Late in the game you get the ability to warp between bonfires, so that's helpful too.

2) No, but like Grunt said, using DSFix is basically 100% necessary. It's easy to install, if you Google it it should come up easily.

Or you can just run and get good at running and be the best like no one ever was and shut up don't be a loser, idiot.

For my money, Dark Souls is still the best overall package. I'd say to stick with it.

When to use humanity:

If you want to summon help for a boss

If you are farming enemies for item drops (humanity increases item drop rate)

If you want to kindle a bonfire (good idea for tough areas)

If you have a weapon whose strength is a function of humanity (but this is uncommon)

Haha, right.

There's a ring in DS2 that gives you human appearance even when hollow. But I don't think there is an item in DS1 that does this.

Late in the game there is an opportunity to farm humanity.

Hell, you can do it pretty early in The Depths. The bonfire is just a room away from a bunch of rats, who drop humanity reasonably commonly.

I guess that's not really a spoiler per se but I'm going to play it safe here.

Another important tip: Get the Artorias of the Abyss DLC if your game didn't already come with it. It's got two of the best boss fights in the series and some other cool surprises.

Don't put any points into the RES stat when you level up. It's useless.

I messed up my first character that way.

Is there any way to force the game to go offline that isn't "disconnect your computer from the internet every time you open Dark Souls"?

Are you on playing the Steam version? Restart Steam in offline mode.

A full 40% of my interaction with the Internet is "yelling at people through Steam", so this is also less than ideal.

I'll probably just have to wait a month until I get internet that doesn't charge by the byte.

A tip I don't see mentioned often: you can get "loose humanity" (meaning it gets puts directly into the counter in the upper left) by repeatedly slaying hollows (basically humanoid enemies) in a single area. Each kill is worth a certain amount of invisible points depending on the area and enemy type; once you get a hundred or so points you get a humanity (indicated by absorbing a black cloud and a strange whooshing noise), up to ten per area. This no longer works once the boss of an area is defeated, however.

Use whatever you need to win. Don't listen to the siren songs about a no-shield run.

I had the exact same thing!

The highlight was seeing YOU DIED replaced by YOU DEFEATED.

Real actual hint time: If you end up getting one of those random humanities that show up when you're going through the level (I think you get one when someone online kindles a bonfire) and you make it to the bonfire/can make it back to a bonfire, go ahead and spend that sucker. I mean pop one of the humanties in your inventory and use one to revive and one to kindle the bonfire, because you technically need 2 humanity to kindle a bonfire. This will make the going a bit easier, as only three bonfires give 10 estus charges right out of the gate. Good candidates for kindling: the bonfire in Undead Burg, the bonfire above the smithy near Sen's Fortress, the bonfire at the bottom of Blighttown, the bonfire inside Anor Londo. Actually all of them will help but these ones moreso.

It's actually random chance to get one when killing a hollow type enemy while the boss is still alive.

Taurus Demon hint: run away from it back towards the starting door. There's a ladder to the left (if you're facing the door). Climb up it and kill the two skeletons (you might wanna do this before you aggro the TD). Then walk off the edge while he's underneath and do an attack midair. You'll do a special attack and fuck him up REALLY bad. You do that a few times and you're good!

It's also possible to beat him the old fashioned way; just dodge (or block I GUESS) all of his attacks and counterattack. Whatever works for you!

One of the many lovably byzantine aspects of the Souls games
