Default Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius

Oh hey this is out now, for iOS and Android. Let's all play another Final Fantasy gatcha on our cellular phones, like that other one but with a plot I guess? Please don't be a whale. Hey, be my friend! My ID is 218,158,702.

EDIT: Hey, friend codes:

krelbel 218,158,702

EDIT2: Hey, this game has a great wiki with a fantastic Beginner's Guide, which is good to glance at if you're interested in getting into this game, or if you're ever wondering what you should be doing. You should read the section at the very start on rerolling in particular, if you're the minmaxing type.

Hello I am a very old man.

Anyway I would like to ask this question: "Hey, remember when the Final Fantasy brand used to mean something?"

Well, bye.

it's from the brave frontier peeps

they do good work

mobile games aren't evil, just different
they're like an arcade had a baby with a mmo

Which makes me sound elegant, I suppose...

I played the soft launch for a bit. The graphics are gorgeous, the music is good, and the battle system is fun. But all the gacha elements are characters, rather than weapons, so I had a hard time getting attached to my party. It's a better game than Record Keeper, at least.

I'd have gone with Octprime instead, which, if you try to pronounce it, comes out sounding like "Octoprime" anyway.

Looks like this iOS version is around 100MB, dunno if Android is different. After Miitomo that looks positively compact.

Might look into this after getting back from the trip I'm about to go on, but only if people say it can be fun to play *without* having to check in with it multiple times a day to get the most out of it. I have enough of that nonsense in my life. If you can let the grind be leisurely I might put up with it for the pretty visuals. I assume since it's gachapon-based there's no way to ensure "catching 'em all" anyway.

Is that the listed download size, though? I assume you might have to download more the first time you run it.

I just started playing Record Keeper so I don't think I will look at this right now...maybe if it has a different style of grinding from that game and it isn't horribly loaded with micro-transactions...

I have no idea if I'll have the longevity here that I do with FFRK, but I think I'm at least through the reroll phase.

I didn't read up beforehand so I bought the early starter pack, linked with my main facebook, and used the summon tickets without rerolling. Very jealous of your shiny sparkly Exdeath. I don't feel like restarting so I'll just go from here, even though I got none of the top or even good tiers (my party's Cyan, Kain, Galuf, Rydia, and uhhhh Anzelm the red mage).

For others, if you feel like getting a leg up (though I have no idea just how significant the advantage will be in the long run), here's a decent starter guide. If it turns out that I've really fucked myself over in the long run by not spamming rerolls, then they designed a bad game and I'll just quit

In less scummy news, I kind of love the writing in a Final Fantasy game??? There's like actual sarcasm and humor going on here, far more than your usual JRPG fare. This came as quite a surprise for a Final Fantasy cell phone game (though, since it's still a cell phone game, I'm playing in such short sessions that actually following the plot is a Challenge, though it seems like they're keeping the plot really simple to account for that.)

My backup tier is pretty similar to yours, with Kain, Edgar, Sabin, and Rain. I wanted to hold out for two top characters, but at around the 8th restart I decided I didn't understand the synergies well enough anyway and I kinda wanted to just play the damn game. Besides, power creep in these games inevitability means later stuff will dwarf everything now anyway.

Actually having an explorable town was a nice surprise, though it made me want some actual controls. Lots of systems to explore as well, which is always fun.

I rolled Shantotto, Edgar and Sabin (Figaro Bros!), and decided to hold onto the rest of my summon tickets for now, as I don't have a clear idea yet how plentiful they'll be.

I have 4* Sabin and Maria with 3* Edgar, Shadow, and Krile. A nice, balanced group (Krile and Maria are pretty bad right now).

I got King Giott! Also, I'm upset how much cooler my 1/2 stars are than my 3 and 4 star freebies.

I mean, I guess I got Firion and Bartz and Rydia and Krile but like

Maxwell looks like a badass. And Leah's in a White Mage outfit!

The party I'm rolling with atm is Firion as leader, Bartz, Kain, Rydia, and Leah.

I'm LancerX, 754,530,975.

Psh I guess a Valkyrie Profile battle system is pretty cool no matter what. I played up to entering the town, so I haven't done anything much yet. The story might be annoying later...I was already rolling my eyes about the stuff with MC-kun's daddy issues.

i love this game's battles but damn it's got terrible exploration segments, and highly questionable character design for crossover characters.

The devs have a lot of experience with the battle system, too. Their previous game, Brave Frontier, was almost exactly Valkyrie Profile, and plays almost identical to Brave Exvius. They also had a bunch of Square Enix guest characters, mostly from less mainline games -- lots of Mana and SaGa dudebros show up, including the entire cast of Secret of Mana. The artstyle is a lot... cuter, I guess, in Brave Frontier, so they'd have to create new assets for Brave Exvius if they brought them back. I expect to see lots of classic-style Final Fantasy bosses to show up -- Brave Frontier's first major fight is straight-up some Zeromus shit. I'll see if I can find my screenshots of it.

Oh I think I'm going to prefer that. I can get way more excited about rolling a character I like than a new fancier sword. It also means the game MIGHT be balanced around in-game loot rather than the gacha!

I have Magitech Terra (I think everyone does right now) and Cyan. Cyan, hilariously, has the world's slowest attack animation. I approve.

I kind of wish the generic mooks had generic mook titles instead of names because I keep thinking they are actual characters from a FF game I didn't play. I have a bard named Gilbert, which feels right somehow.

Found it!

I hope FF:B&E gets Brave Frontier's arena mechanic. That was a lot of fun, beating up other peoples' parties.
