Default La-Mulana, the world's best fake MSX game

La-Mulana is sort of what Cave Story would be like if somebody made it ridiculously tough and also a fake MSX game, complete with lots of MSX "fan-service" which us filthy Westerners will never understand. It's pretty great! We should play it and discuss what the hell to do because this game has the most obtuse puzzles this side of "Hit Deborah cliff with your head to make a hole". I love it anyway though.

And yes, it's a "metroidvania" for those of you who care. It's so much of one, in fact, that the game seems to lack any kind of structure! But I've also only been playing it for about six hours, so we'll see.

This game has some of the hardest, most obscure, puzzles I've ever seen in a game. Once you've got a couple life crystals and the grail you're never really in danger of dying, but it's still one of the hardest games I've ever played.

Played quite some of it, then forgot about it as the semester went by...

Might return to it. You have to be in a certain mood to appriciate games like these.

If Indiana Jones was the last of a long line of Ninjas, he'd be Professor Lemeza.
I beat this last May, but it never left my mind. The moment I heard the music that plays at the Ankh, I was hooked. The game is quite incredible, from the music to the atmosphere to the theming and creepiness.

God, I love this game.

In honor of the new Indiana Jones movie being released today, I would like to remind everyone once again to check this game out.

The main character is essentially Indy raised by Ninja. He's Ninjiana Jones!

I have watched a full play through of this, and I do not understand how anyone could ever have fun with it. The game looks like a huge 200 hour series of completely arbitrary puzzles with nonsensical play mechanics (Combine these inexplicable ROMs to progress!)

It seems like the type of game that would make a 8 year old cry.

Or a 28 year old.

Thanks for reminding me that I need to get back "into" this game. After finishing out the first area of the dungeon I had NO FUCKING IDEA what to do and kind of let the game sit on the side for a while. I'll be coming back to it.

It's definitely an acquired taste. It's difficult, the puzzles are obtuse, the control's a bit limited and the graphics can be weak at times.

But the game is intentionally designed the way it is, not only as an MSX game but as the ultimate ancient ruins simulator. The game has themes, both atmospheric and musical, that run through it and tie it all together, and once one grasps them they realize how beautiful it all is.
It's not entirely an arbitrary exercise in frustration, but there is a pretty big barrier of entry.

Bumped, because according to an issue of Nintendo Power (according to GoNintendo), this game is getting a WiiWare port.

First Cave Story, now this.

Next should be Spelunky, right?

Right?

Holy crap -

the only thing is, once Spelunky came around, I not only stopped playing La Mulana (truthfully, I'd stopped long before), but I decided that La Mulana no longer needed to exist.

Oh, the ache of needing Wiiware Spelunky hurts so. Actually, DS would be preferable, but whatevs.

I didn't like Spelunky. I couldn't get the controls to map correctly to my gamepad.

Hmm hmm... checking the Nicalis blog, it seems that they're going to be working with Nigoro to put the game on WiiWare. (For those who don't know, they're also doing the Cave Story WiiWare port.) I've avoided La Mulana thus far, mostly because of the reported obtuseness of the game. I don't think the WiiWare version will do much to change that... but who knows, maybe I'll still be interested.

Can't help but wonder if they're going to change some things. There's a significant sexual theme in the game - strictly in the biological sense, but still explicit.

Seems a bit hardcore for a Nintendo console in this family-oriented day and age. I admit, I haven't played this game, but from all accounts it looks a lot less friendly than a generic Waggle Racer, or even Cave Story at that.

Hey guys sorry about this, for some reason there's a board glitch that randomly causes posts from 2006 to show up as new

Careful, now; if you try to fix it, Ganietzsche might blow up. (No hard feelings, Ganietzsche!)

It's a remake.

I hope you can still use the original graphics if you want, like in Cave Story. The MSX nostalgia is a part of the draw for me.

I'll probably stick with the original MSX syle (and it's free!), but still, I'm more receptive to these full-on "remake" graphics than Cave Story's "revised" ones, so it wouldn't be such a big deal to me if you can't switch to the old style.

The remake graphics mean that I actually care about this game now. As shallow as it may be, I tried to play the original a while ago, but couldn't get past the graphics (the NES era is my cutoff point).

I'll only play this if the game is made considerably less opaque.

Those screens look nice. Oh and I guess dated opinions and VIEWS ON WII arise when one ramps up the game news apathy for a few years. There must be balls-hard Wiiware things I don't know about. To be honest, I'm not sure why I still post here.

Edit: I consider this game to be on a much more niche level than MM9. Opaque, hardcore flash-game difficulty.
