May he rest in power.

It's funny, I am apparently just young enough that I hadn't actually heard much of the piss thing.

I've never seen BTTF and I wasn't around for the original release. How did Chuck Berry like how the movie suggested to the largely white audience that rock and roll was something blacks stole from whites, rather than the other way around?

I wonder how he'd feel opening this thread and seeing the whitewashed version of his song in the first post.

You have too seen it and you've never wondered how he's ever felt about anything.

I didn't know who Chuck Berry was when I first saw Back to the Future, so I missed the joke and thought the musician was calling a record producer.

That's really how the movie ends.

The greater tragedy here is not Chuck's death but that TK Flash has never seen Back to the Goddamn Future.

I'll tell one Chuck Berry story and I'm done:

Dan Akroyd booked Chuck for the House of Blues some time in the 90s, and he about lost his mind at the prospect of hanging out with a living idol before the show.

Chuck arrived and Akroyd hit him with the "you're my hero, I've loved your music forever" routine, but Chuck immediately cut him off by asking if he was the promoter. Dan said yes, and Chuck responded that he wanted a bottle of whiskey and a brown paper bag with his money in his dressing room immediately.

Chuck Berry had no time for your shit.

Dan Akroyd has literal autism and by his own admission struggles to function in a lot of contexts. As such I try to cut him a break.

Whelp, now I look like an asshole. I was entirely unaware of that. I had him mentally binned with that History Channel alien meme guy with the giant hair. Apologies.

You're not an asshole, you just didn't fixate on 1980s screenwriters like I did back in high school. The History Channel guy is a carny, Dan is 100% earnest in everything he does.

Hey, someone post that picture of Chuck Berry reviewing punk albums. He understood punk in a way that few allowed themselves to.

Highly recommend the old documentary Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock and Roll, which not only features terrific concert bits -- Chuck backed up by Eric Clapton and three-quarters of the Rolling Stones -- but provides an illuminating look at Berry's personality, or what he's willing to reveal of it, which is only so much. In his latter days, at least, he approached making music like a Mafia hitter approaches a guy who needs two in the back of the head.

Counterpoint: Can we prove that the history channel guy isn't actually Dan in a mask. How do we know we weren't all made fools of?

I assume Dan is so face blind that he would never even think to wear a mask.

Chuck played a lot of white clubs at a time when the promoter might just have the sheriff's deputies beat you senseless and break your shit instead of paying you. I doubt he had one drop of sentiment about the business.
