What's the one where you learn to use a crossbow the entire time even though Link has never used a crossbow otherwise? Or, no, that one that's actually three bad games? There's so many to choose from.

The Legend of Zelda: Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions. It doesn't feel like a Zelda game at all!

I like how all of you are praising OoT for being the bestest worst when all of you have sworn up and down that MM is vastly superior at various points (I bounced hard off of MM, and have no desire to try and revisit it so maybe MM IS TRULY THE WORST ZELDA?!?).

I got farther in both Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks than I ever did in OoT

I like Spirit Tracks too...

Hot take: I was kind of unimpressed by a Link Between Worlds. It's felt way too much like a remake of LTTP that they decided to make a new game out of halfway through.

I unironically voted for Okami. That game is way too long with a story that's not interesting whatsoever.

What you say is true and yet I completed Okami but couldn't make it through even the child phase of OoT.

Outside of the awful final battle, Spirit Tracks is really solid. I especially liked the dungeons.

I feel like without Okami, you don't get a lot of BotW, frankly. Okami itself certainly owes a great deal to Wind Waker, but between avariant moon tribe's archaic tech aesthetic showing up all over BotW (not that both don't owe another great deal to Ghibli, certainly) and the Sheikah Slate basically being the game's answer to the divine brush, I feel a lot of Okami's specific DNA in here.

Can we all agree that a game based very faithfully on the cartoon with a chattery, snarky ass Link, huffy 80s princess Zelda and cartoon evil Ganon would be the best?

The archaic tech thing is much more directly owed to Skyward Sword. Which again, is basically what if we literally made Zelda into Laputa (they literally live on floating cities). Ghibli adoration is the key here.

And any gameplay similarities between recent Zelda games and Okami are convergent evolution rather than horizontal gene swapping. Okami is 11 years old at this point, and there's been a half-dozen Zelda games in between. I really doubt now of all times was when they sat down and said "let's copy this 11 year old Zelda-clone." The Sheikah Slate is much more a consequence of "how do we still impart special item abilities when we've decided to make all items destructible?" rather than "we should condense item abilities like Okami did!"

Dungeons - good.

The fact that you're locked into pre-determined overworld routes by the train tracks, making travel hideously inefficient - bad enough to make me wonder if the design team just hated everyone. You're just on the train too goddamn much by the end of the game, and coming from ME that's a sad statement.

Foolish human, only the Mario games get to give their leads actual personalities rather than the archetypes they've been fulfilling since... 1993?

Yo, seriously though I feel like asking Nintendo to give their characters personalities is like wishing on a monkey paw. I'm looking at you, Other M.
