Arby's posted this on their FB page yesterday and I love it. Their social media is strong:

Oh yeah? I'll give you some real spoilers! The entirety of Final Fantasy 7 is just Yuffie's dying delusions about the group of thugs that murdered her in a forest. That's why there are so many spelling mistakes and contradictions - Yuffie's a dumbass.

seriously though i'm about to play the fan retranslation of ff7

wish me luck

hopefully this is more Mother 3 and less Brave New World

I have to say: I love the lighting and composition. There's something melancholy but peaceful about an empty Arby's at the crack of dawn, a sandwich mysteriously impaled by the tiny replica of a huge sword. Is this how a tiny Cloud begins his day? Did he hoist a sandwich larger than his torso onto the table and, exhausted, stabbed his sword into it as he retreated to take a breather? Is it normal for Arby's to see RPG characters come in for a meal, as though they were regular Joes and Janes unafraid to mingle with the common folk? Does Cloud quietly ponder upon the road ahead as he feeds his body thin slices of chicken and tomato?

Also: they also managed to make Arby's look tasty!

I only realized the Arby's thing is supposed to be the title screen because I started a new game today.

So I know people have had a bit to play XV, so where does the game fall in their ranking of mainline FF games? Only like on chapter 6 of it myself, so not quite ready to make that judgement myself, but curious if people are ready to make that judgement yet.

And hell, the thread is still early. So lets get everyones top 15 mainline FF games!

I've only played 2.5 hours of FFXV (not counting an unfortunate experience with the tutorial) and... I'll still give it a chance to click with me, because so far it's been both boring (plotwise) and counterintuitive (in gameplay). The few battles I've had were chaotic disasters, and lock-on and Warp Hangs are nearly impossible for me to pull off.

I did love the arcade pinball and I spent about half an hour on that, though! I'd honestly pay good money to see it on Google Play.

It sort of is already.

I honestly wasn't impressed with it the little bit I played.

Haven't played them all yet, but I'd say my list goes:

6 > 14 > 10 > 9 > 5 > 4 > 13 > 8 > 7 > 1 > 3

Couldn't stand what I played of 12 but I'll be giving it another shot when the remake comes out.

Incidentally:

(12>6>4) > 9 > 10 > 5 > 8 > 7 > 3 > 1 > 2

N/A: 11, 14.

Not enough playtime to form an opinion: 13, 15.

hell yeah

I'm cheating by replacing the games I don't like / haven't played with mainline sequel games.
  1. FF7 - It's very good.
  2. FF1 - It's just so quintessential.
  3. FF14 - Great characters, great story, minimal bullshit.
  4. FF13 - Having the best characters and best battle system balances out having the worst story ever told by a video game not named "Custard's Revenge."
  5. FF13-3 - The game made me excited to see fucking Noel again, for Jenova's sake.
  6. FF8 - Junctioning is my favorite customization system in the series, even if it's fundamentally broken.
  7. FF12 - It stars fantasy Solid Snake! It loses some points for making you play as Axl until you beat enough Mavericks, though.
  8. FF10 - Perfectly serviceable Final Fantasy! The game design is just solid enough to rob 90% of the enemies in the game of any flavor.
  9. FF4 DS - This specific version is like a pair of artificial nostalgia goggles, letting me see the game the way everyone else sees it.
  10. FF6 - The final dungeon and Magicite drags this game down further than it would be otherwise.
  11. FF10-2 HD - Catching monsters is fun!
  12. FF5 - I like this game, but it's Pepsi, and I'm a Coke man.
  13. FF2 - It's a perfectly serviceable game, and way ahead of its time, so long as you've read the stars properly in order to learn how to play.
  14. FF9 - Features the single best chunk of Final Fantasy in the series. The rest is, uh. Not as good. Also, I don't like learning stuff from equipment.
  15. FF11 - I ain't got time to gather a party to do shit! And it's a shame! This game's world seems great!

I have not played FF15. Everything else is omitted because I don't like it.

My personal rankings

6>4>7>13-(1, LR, 2)>9>10>3>1>2

Never finished or didn't like:
5, 8, 12, 10-2

never played
11, 14, 15

Some of those could flip-flop if you asked me another day, and I think i liked FF2 more than most so it's a pretty narrow range of "all pretty good games"

Final Fantasy XV's a pretty cool sandbox to mess around in, and excellent if you love chocobo riding,* fishing, and playing Dragoon, but the combat can get pretty YMMV, most of the story's back-loaded, and these quests ain't Witcher 3 grade.

Not gonna rank it (I'd just disagree with the ranking later), but I've enjoyed my time with it. Definitely room for improvement, though. Also the game's really got me itching to replay FF8. 15 has a lot in common with the mid-to-late 90s sci-fi era of Final Fantasy, 8 in particular.

* I want Chocographs added to this game via DLC. Bad.

My rankings:

VIII > VII > X > VI > XI > V > IV > XII > XV > I > XIII > II = III

Haven't played XI or XIV and don't believe they should be mainline numbered entries.

I've always been one to reject things that are more popular, so for a long time I considered FFVII overrated. Still good, but overrated. I recognize this about myself and I think it's silly, but I still find myself doing it all the time. It's very rare that I don't latch onto lower tier characters in fighting games, or try to find ways to make unusual or sub-optimal builds workable in some weird effort to stand out.

That said, over the years, I've come to appreciate FFVII a lot more. I think it has some mechanical issues, but overall I'd probably rank it at the top of my list. It's so much more compelling than the other games in the series.

So now, instead, I consider FFVII the best* in the series, but also believe that people generally like it for Totally the Wrong Reasons™.

Not much of an improvement, I guess.

7 > 12 > 5 > 6 > 9 > 4 > 8 > 3 > 10 > 13

Have never played the original game (!!), II, XV, or the MMOs. I can see myself playing through I and XV in my lifetime, but probably not the others.

7 is the clear winner for me; the best of all the games, or at least the story heavy "classic" styled games. 12 is right behind it but obviously it's a huge departure and I've only played it once. Looking forward to Zodiac edition.

8 actually fell three or four spots recently. I played it for the first time in a while and the nostalgia lenses proved to be pretty cracked. I don't love 6 or 9 the way a lot of people do, but I do quite like them. I seem to hold 5 in the same high regard as a lot of TTers, though.

Probably wouldn't rank VII as my overall fave (that fight's between V and VI), but the game played a pretty big role in getting me to love sci-fi anime and games. Hell, the game's basically Akira x Evangeilon.

If everyone else is doing it...

T = V > VI > I > XII = XV > IV > VIII = X = III (jp) > XIII > VII > II > IX*

IX is an odd one, it's a wonderful game but in a lot of ways (most of the ones that really matter on a replay) it's easily the worst in the series. If this were just for a first playthrough it would move up a lot, likely next to XII and XV.

I like FF7 so much these days I can't even describe why. It's just great!

Now let me describe why.

The story's pretty good if you can parse it - note: an unreliable narrator necessitates a fantastic localization - and you always seem to be the just right level for everything if you just gun it to the end. There are a few stumbling points, like the game basically making Barret and Tifa mandatory for a huge chunk of the early game so you don't have to grind later, but otherwise it's just so smooooooth. It's also only like 20 hours long, which is the exact right length. It's so hard to explain why FF7 is good that Square themselves latched onto the superficial elements of the game rather than the juicy core - cranking those superficial elements like the Buster Sword, Sephiroth, and Cloud's identity crisis up to eleven is what made the Compilation of FF7 happen. It gets the balance of pre-FF7 goofy and post-FF7 self-seriousness perfect. We'll never see another Final Fantasy with a pile of mostly competent mini-games wrapped into the plot.
