I thought Final Fantasy IX was a boring slog when I played it 15 years ago. I might go back to it someday, but only on a portable system. So far, though, I've never been bored enough to give it a second chance.

I'm continuing my replay of Final Fantasy X and I'm starting to approach the end of the story. The middle third of the game isn't quite as strong as the intro, in that the scenes of destruction that were so moving have now been replaced by infighting in the anime church. The stretch through through Gagazet and into Zanarkand is also a bit too linear, I'm feeling the hallway effect more than I was earlier. But now it's time for the final cloister and after that I'll have the airship, so the pace will be changing up soon. Mechanically, the game is starting to really open up now that I have a healthy supply of Lv 3 keyspheres (thanks, Biran and Yenke!) and most of my characters are at the end of their respective paths. Auron has turned into a beastmonster, frequently maxing out the damage cap with his beautifully animated swings. Lulu's in second place with some very damaging spells, plus I think she picked up Doublecast recently? I forgot, haven't needed to use it yet. Still haven't decided whether I'll invest in the post-game or not - it will mostly depend on whether I can find a Switch in the near future. If I don't have anything better to do with my portable game time, then I expect I'll at least give the dark aeons a shot.

Anyway, I still like Final Fantasy X a whole lot. It's just weird that people harp on the laughing scene, which is awkward but makes sense, when there are worse-acted scenes later on. The bit where Tidus finds out what's waiting at the end of Yuna's pilgrimage is probably the most cringe-inducing scene in the game, for my money.

Final Fantasy 9 is hot garbage that has been made from smaller pieces of even hotter garbage, the first game that made me realize that, yes, Squaresoft could do wrong.

Washed? I practically boiled them and then nuked the game from orbit. It was the only way to be sure.

Every Final Fantasy is bad, which is why every Final Fantasy is good.

Except 13. That one (and its sequels) are actually bad, and no amount of ironic (or sincere) appreciation can make them good.

I'd play 13 and its sequels everyday of the week and twice on Sunday before I ever play 9 again. I'm not being ironic or contrarian. I really dislike 9.

The only problem with 9 is its slow pace. And really, it's just the battles. The battles take too long to load when starting and ending, the animations are all far too long, and battles seem to be more frequent.

Learning abilities from equipment is the worst system ever. Always has been, always will be.

you say that but

i like it

(though i could certainly see a better implementation of "equipment pieces can have several abilities, and weaker abilities show up often on gear of all power levels, so you're less beholden to that short sword you bought from the first town in the game just so you can learn that basic sword skill")

Counterpoint Alt: Learning abilities from equipment can be good, but only if the abilities aren't crap and the equipment isn't too hard to acquire.

Final Fantasy struggles against the legacy issues of an extremely steep equipment gradient, and how the special effect items are scattered across that gradient (see the lowly Mage Masher). In that context, I rather like IX's ability to rip those effects off of items, and the multiple redundancy in armor means eating a defense penalty to learn an ability isn't completely onerous. The a la carte passive effect system is also less esoteric and fiddly than Junctioning or Materia Swapping, while also keeping characters' unique mechanical identities. It's not the most exciting possible iteration of the system, but I think it's a plus, rather than a minus in IX's column.

I would have liked 9's system if a few things were fixed:
Passives were not boring, and were far more common. I'm talking like 5 passives per accessory/armor piece, since levels gate how many passives you can equip anyway. And more stuff like Long Range, or Cover, and less anti-ailment stuff. Leave those kinds of bonuses as equipment passives.
Stores and towns actually remained open so you didn't get screwed by advancing the plot. This part messes us all up, because you want to buy everything, and probably multiples of some things, for synthesis. The only things you can do to combat that are grind a lot of battles to learn every skill when they're available, or spoil the game so you know in advance which towns are going to get shut down by the plot.
Active abilities took less battles/AP to learn. Basically, instead of "AP Up" as a passive you have to equip, just make active abilities learned much faster. That way hanging on to equipment is less of a drag, and you can enjoy the synthesis system more.

One positive is FF9 has a huge variety in equipment bonuses, like elemental resists/absorbs, or added ailments on weapons. That's always made gear useful for more than just numbers go up in FF games.

I would have liked FF9 if it had different characters, different art direction, different music, different setpieces, and if I didn't have to go through several cycles of literal samsara before each random battle begins and ends.

Really, the ability/gear system is the least of my FF9 troubles.

So you'd like FF9 of they took out all of the things that make it great and fixed it's one actual problem? Okay then.

So you're saying you absolutely LOVE Chocobo Hot & Cold, the basic plot, and the sidequests?

How divisive 9 is never fails to amaze me, even when I'm part of that divisiveness.

Until I joined TT, I had no idea people felt so strongly about IX. Everywhere else, I'd always seen IX quietly ignored, or treated as a hidden gem by some defenders, but never anything approaching such debate.
