Default Best Game Music Forever Battledome - Most Battlest Edition (voting)

Battle!

Battle!

Battle!

As I probably said in both the previous Battle-related Thunderdomes, I love me some videogame battle music. I'm not going to get into the reasons why again, especially since I'm crunched for time tonight, but suffice to say battle music is awesome.

So Twenty-Eight of you folks, myself included, decided to nominate a whole bunch of battle tracks that will now battle it out to see which battle makes the best battle in the battle to end all battlebattlebattle!

All-told we had a little over 150 nominations, but I had to trim it down some. As it turns out, everyone who nominated up to five tracks got to keep those five, that took us to 125. So THREE sixth nominations got to sneak through. Which ones? I guess you'll find out sooner or later!

Also, I very nearly disqualified a few tracks for not technically being battle tracks (I'm looking at you, Scott Pilgrim Rock Club) that I normally wouldn't allow for the same reasons I wouldn't technically consider, like, one of the Zelda Dungeon BGMs. Buuut I was feeling generous and it was only like one or two tracks, and they were both beat-em-ups anyway, and you tell me that genre doesn't get the spirit of battle!

And yes, RT-55J, you were late on your last few, but I was late actually posting that the cut-off had happened so I'll cop to that and let your edits in.

Now then! On to the main event! One Hundred and Twenty Eight tracks have to duke it out for supremacy! 128! CXXVIII! I bet you're thinking that first bracket is gonna take forever, right? Well no, because I'm following the same rules as the LAST Thunderdome! That's right! For the entire first round each day will be best two of four! And there's no bracket yet, so you're gonna have to keep coming back every day to see if one of your nominations made it in! Ha! Mind games! And each day the list will be randomized so even I don't know what's coming. Heck, for all any of us know there might be a day where four of one person's nominations all fight at once! That's the drama of the randomizer, ladies and gentlemen! It spares no one! (actually I may just re-randomize the list if that ever happens. Let me know if that's what you want, everyone)

So with all that said and done, here are our first tracks!

Shadow of the Colossus - Final Battle (Sarge), Bomberman Hero - Tripod (falz)

Final Fantasy XIV - Woe is that Madness (Umbaglo), Disgaea - Planet X (juca)

You guys have until 7pm EST tomorrow to gets your votes in! Remember, best 2 of 4! Pick whichever two you think should to continue!

Which are the raddest?

Which are the blood-pumping-est?

Which are the Most Battlest???

The correct total number of tracks is 128, not 126.

I vote for Final Fantasy XIV and Disgaea, which surprises me.

Of course it is, why would you think I said any different? How silly.

This is a hard one for me, i like these four tracks equally. I'll give a vote for Shadow Of The Colossus and Disgaea though, because i've played both games and thefore i know these music fit both games well. My votes reflect my ignorance.

Hearing this song when i first played SotC was an... emotional shock. I was sixteen! Time flies.

Gosh, memory is a funny thing. I remember being in emotional shock with the music from the battle with the last colossi, but in some day between then and now i changed mentally this music to the music from the thunderdome. Probably because of the title.

It would be nice to play SotC again, but just thinking about playing it makes me sad... I can't hurt the colossus again. ;(

Bomberman Hero and Final Fantasy XIV

And pitting two choices by the same person against each other in the first round seems a little cruel.

He asked if we were okay with it were the randomizer to do so.

Ah, I was confused when you said 'in the first round'.

Honestly, I don't really mind either way. It's not like a song's nominator is particularly important???

In these game music tournaments, I enjoy the tracks in a very specific way. The tracks get posted and I listen through each one at least until the loop ends, one after the other, collecting my thoughts on each between videos. Some tracks are better composed for this sort of consumption than others. I attempt to separate them from the games in which they are found because I have not played most of them; of course this is impossible for many entries which do hold a large place in my heart due to their choice placement in their game.

I nominated the Bomberman Hero track because it's short 50 second loop never fails to grab my attention and hold it until it is over. The entire OST has that quality, with its creative and volatile rhythms and and sparse yet catchy melodies.

The Shadow of the Colossus track, to a lesser extent, retains my attention for the duration of its loop through its distinct sections of booming melody combined with the consistency of the percussion, with sections where they join together for emphasis.

The FFXIV and Disgaea songs did not manage to keep my attention. They lack a uniqueness the other two are able to find. Disgaea's repetitive and generic EDM backing synths and rhythms did nothing for the track. I enjoyed the FFXIV track a smidge more though. The breakneck drum machines have slight variation throughout while the vocal chorus drops in and out and the dynamics shift. Still while the generic, meandering piano probably is enjoyable in the background during gameplay, there wasn't much to like about it in this context.

Well, assuming it counts, I'll go ahead and vote for SotC. It's one of my favorite tracks... and I had no idea it wasn't actually used, which tells you how fuzzy my memory is of that last battle. Sorry 'bout that, y'all.

My other vote will go to Disgaea.

Woe is that Planet X

As for the validity of the SotC track, well no one spoke up about it in the nominating thread that I saw (surely I'm not that blind) and I have to admit to my shame that I still have not played the game so I wouldn't have recognized it as being unused myself.

So for now as far as I'm concerned it was accepted and is valid, and I'll let the voters of Talking Time judge whether or not it gets to continue.

Bomberman Hero has skittering venetian snares drum programming so it's basically an autovote for me
Final Fantasy XIV mostly gets a vote over SOTC because I think it's one of the lesser sotc tracks. I like Disgaea's opening and the pumping bass synth but something about it isn't really sitting with me. Jumps around too much maybe.

as long as the piece is part of the official soundtrack to the game, it seems fine.
