Default Nostalgia Remixed: Talking about Video Game Covers

The Remixdome III just ended, but I realized that we don't really have a generic thread for sharing your favorite remixes! I used to run a college radio show where I played both originals and remixes, but now that I don't have that outlet (I just graduated after all) I'm getting that itch to share again.

If you followed the most recent Remixdome, you'll know that I love jazz covers. The OneUps used to be my favorite cover group, but recently they haven't been making songs that jive with my favorite jazz-types. Some of my favorites come off of their Volume 2 and their Super Mario Kart Album, such as their cover of Chrono Trigger's main theme (which is probably their best song I've seen performed live).

Recently, though, The Consouls have been scratching my jazz itch, and surprisingly for the consistency of their releases and professionalism, they don't have that much publicity yet (probably due from hailing from down under). This cover of a the classic Mario Underground could fall into the hackneyed trap of so many other Underground covers, but their fast tempo and breakdown of the tune into some funky time signatures (is that a 7/8 I hear at points? Maybe!) really takes it straight into the realm of jazz and make it their own.

What covers have y'all been listening to and enjoying lately? What are your favorites?

One of my favorite chipfunk artists does the occasional remix song, and did an entire album of Sonic remixes that is pretty darn good as well.

The Advantage are the kings of NES covers, as far as I'm concerned.

I like the instrumentation for the Sonic remixes, but I really wish he had a real orchestra for them. I'm enjoying his newest album a lot more. It mixes chiptune with other instruments (or samples) and makes a unique sound, very cool!

Mr. Turpin's best albums are probably this new one, his first album Rhythm 'n' Bitz, Friendchip, and Chip Songbook #5(? it's the one that's actually a full album instead of four or five songs). Honorable mentions go to Hedgehog Orchestral Suite and Chip Ship (a kind of atmospheric RPG-ish soundtrack).

All recorded off a real Genesis (well for almost all the tracks an X'Eye, to be precise; a couple are off a Model 1 from my folks' place), though I should in the near future re-record everything since I think I can get some of the noise down so it sounds cleaner.

So much Castlevania, you guys.

OCRemix just released a jazz Chrono Trigger album. It's awesome. Super chill, great arrangements, very well done. Also, duh, it's free, so you should get it and listen to it.

I can second that, it's not the best I've ever heard but they are all solid takes, and I really enjoy the improvisation that they do on every track.

I'm glad I took the time to watch those long-ass mixes, because they are both super fantastic. Thanks Sanagi!

Same sentiments as above, these are some cool mixes. Wish they made them more regularly!

Was talking about FALLEN, the new Materia Collection release, in the Undertale thread. As usual with Materia releases, it's a way for lesser artists to get their music noticed so there's always going to be a lot of songs that don't really click for you. I haven't had enough time to dig, but I already know which artists I tend to like, so if you haven't heard it yet go check out The Triforce Quartet's take on the main theme of Undertale (track 37), it's fantastic and heart-rending like the original.

I'm kind of the single target demographic for these albums but I've been loving Game Music Lullabies: Prescription for Sleep as they're fantastic relaxing jazz covers of game tunes. Just today they announced their latest album, which is going to be fifteen covers of Undertale! Enjoy all the sax + piano duets, this time with more monsters and feels.

Here's the announcement trailer with some samples!

Man, every Metroid song on analog synth sounds like an alternate take on the Doctor Who theme. (Not a complaint)

You may have been disappointed in the Switch press conference (or not!) but you will not be disappointed by the awesome jazz cover concert Nintendo held in celebration of the Switch news!

Less exciting for me but maybe just as good for you all, they also had a rock concert covering some songs as well (notably Splatoon!).
