Lots of good stuff in here. I gotta make a mental note to dig around for stuff to post.

If any of you were in to the sam bosma knight classroom piece, definitely check out The Hanging Tower. It costs $2 for the digital version and it's a great little comic.

I will never get sick of dragons. I will always love inventive and creative spins on dragons. Viva la fruit dragons! Viva them all!

This thread makes me so happy, everything in it is just such a ray of joy. Thank you for making it. ♥

Indeed. But I'm going to need some attractive male elves for ... for comparison.

Seriously, it's really great. The Orc Bard actually improved my day because it actually made me laugh on a day where I really really needed it.

And I didn't know where to post the amazing Orc Ladies before this thread existed. But I'd love to see more of stuff like that in general. We get inured and jaded about all the terrible fantasy art out there, but there's so much good as well. We just never see it because we (rightly) just notice and complain about the bad.

But... getting back to the important stuff:

what is the common genesis of the orc body shape and facial structure? I mean, what literature described the features, and what concept art cemented it?

The modern interpretation? I'd say Warhammer and Warcraft.

Tolkien's description of Uruk-Hai (which leads to WETA's incredible production design, and Peter Jackson's casting of a bunch of Maori mountains in Lord of the Rings), which leads to Warhammer Fantasy's orcs, which leads to Chris Metzens more humanoid design for Warcraft: Orcs vs. Humans. Before that it was all lanky sub-humans and Porcs.

Well, the general appearance of orcs can be traced back to Tolkien, describing them as "squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes". He also does describe them as "porcine", which the Brothers Hildebrandt ran with in their 1976 Tolkien calendar.

The original AD&D Monster Manual of 1977 illustrated orcs as fairly piglike, and it was one of the stronger influences on modern fantasy.

I hypothesize that there was also some cultural influence from Return of the Jedi, as with the Gamorrean Guards in Jabba's Palace. They're green, they're piglike, they die like mooks to the heroes.

I suspect those are the main progenitors of the modern concept of the orc. A lot of it has just been adjustment of certain features. In many cases, as seen with examples posted above, it's just dialing back the inhuman characteristics.

... and then of course WarCraft visually inspired the Peter Jackson movies, bringing it full circle.

I do kinda miss pig/dog-faced orcs sometimes though. And I'm also a huge fan of the weird direction Rankin-Bass took them that lead directly to moblins:

Dunno if you're saying this because you know of it and the image reminded you, or you just like that page, but if it's the latter (and also for the benefit of anyone else who wants to read it), you can find the rest of it here.

Against my better judgement, I'm now curious as to what lore considerations led to it looking like the half-orc is the only one of those that's circumcised.

I think another big development aside from the ones Büge has mentioned has been the blurring of half orcs. Tolkien had them (Suraman had a bunch in the Shrie), AD&D had them to let players play 'orcs' without requiring them to be brought out of the 'evil monsters, slay on sight' status.
