Kotaku has more info about NieR: Automata, along with some gameplay footage.

It looks good so far, though it kinda doesn't quite feel like NieR if you're not playing as a giant, grizzled ol' bastard, y'know?

To be fair, this is only true for those in the western world and the 5 people in Japan who played it on the 360.

I'm excited for this game as long as you don't have to replay the final dungeons 4 times to get the real ending.

And totally fine with the playable character not resembling a buff Gary Busey.

I tried to google image search a suitable 'excited reaction gif' but none of them adequately conveyed what I feel inside.

Even within the first ten minutes, the expectations of the audience are going to be radically challenged, and Taro's keen to keep up that pace. "I really want to keep that turnaround of surprises for the player in Nier 2. I like doing new things, and I'm going try and experiment and add something new and different. It may fail, it may not be received well, but I really want to add that and create that uniqueness. Maybe I should make a really boring, tedious game. They'd be surprised by that instead!"

"There's one other idea I had recently to make the game a big surprise to people," he carries on, with a prankish smile. "That was to give you random endings as paid DLC. But they said no to that. The team really didn't like that idea."

I 100% believe that Taro would make DLC like that

Jesus CHRIST Kotaku, why this sick fascination with Kaine's genitalia and your need to point it out EVERY SINGLE TIME? That was basically the only thing you cared about when covering the original Nier!

Adding the YT embed so Kotaku doesn't get any more clicks from it:

*ahem*

Anyway. Some Nier spoilers below.

I like what I see in the footage. It's like a mix between Nier and Drak3, and I like how the assistant pod/Weiss analogue is integrated with the action. Calling it now: it will have a human soul/Shade inside it, providing commentary while the silent protag goes about her business.

Speaking of which, Nier's in-game documents describe the Androids as "soulless", and they, themselves, claim to have no emotions, but in practice that was all bunk. They certainly expressed fear, regret, passion, hate, love, the whole shebang. So, more than likely, these new Androids will be exactly the same, and part of RB's arc will be about discovering how much she loves alcoholic drinks that include rat and lizard tails acknowledging her emotions. In fact, I'm going to venture a theory:

This is set directly after Nier (doesn't matter which ending, but IIRC the artbook says the (laff) alien invasion happens after D). Although the Shadowlord was destroyed, and all Gestalts are doomed to go insane and turn into Shades, some other caretaker facility elsewhere in the world finds that they can stall or at least delay the relapse by encasing the souls in machines. So when the (laff) aliens arrive, the even fewer remnants of humanity pack up and take everyone to the Moon --Gestalts, Replicants, Androids, whatever.

Then it'll turn out that the (laff) "aliens" are also 100% human in complete human bodies, descended from escapees from the WCS thousands of years ago, and they're simply trying to come back home.

Then again, Taro already played that card once. So it'll probably turn out to be something completely different.

There is no real ending. The game was trolling you.

Though, yes, Nier makes you revisit places way too many times.

I had to revisit that damn robot factory so many times that I started to dislike the factory music. That shouldn't be possible.

And yet, the awesome Sand Temple gets used only once aside from a side quest later on. Same goes for Spooky Mansion and Diablo Lab.

Fortunately for me, "The Wretched Automatons" is my favorite piece in the soundtrack, so I never grew tired of the Scrapheap.

Hell I just queued it on my iPod thanks to this thread.

One day, many moons from now, I will purchase a PS4.

And on that day, I will also get Nier 2.

Or maybe I'll just buy the game and then steal borrow a PS4 from someone.

The only thing keeping me from frothing at the mouth is that it's not titled NieR 3: The Quest for NieR 2.

You mean for Drakengard 3? Because Nier has it in branch B, which starts immediately at the midpoint of the story (and thus adds another 6 hours or so, or less if your Branch A endgame left you with a good setup). Only new content in D is the very end.

As for routes B thru D in Drakengard 3, the only new content is a few bosses. All the stages from the initial run are reused. Well, except for the final one...

Everything looks great except the weapons/scabbards floating a meter off of their backs. Someone pointed that out to me earlier and I can't unsee it.

I mean, I'm sure there will be a very anime reason for it, but yeesh.

It's a stylistic choice. The weapons are fixed in a position over the androids' backs by golden halos. Personally, I don't mind it. It gives the androids an even more "hyper sci-fi" feature, and an antigrav device helps justify how a rail-thin character can swing around the fully-upgraded Beastlord like it was a baseball bat.

My only experience with NieR is its soundtrack, which I bought. Pretty good. And now... more. Wonderful.

I played Nier and thought it was pretty cool.

Then, today, I saw the trailer for he sequel, and... does "love at first sight" apply to trailers? I want this game inside of m...y PS4.

I didn't think they'd bring back the bullet curtains. I'm happy they did.

I've stated before how I was burned by Drakengard 3's boring evil idols and one note disciples. Much of the charm of Nier was from it's bizarre cast, and Robo Rei Ayanami looks like she could be from a hundred other pieces of Japanese media. I don't know if Nier 2 gets to be as weird and experimental as the first one. Also, I don't trust Platinum's work for hire projects.

I'd like to think Yoko is very much aware of what made Nier 1 work on a thematic level, so I doubt the androids will be just Robo Reis. Drak3 might not have worked for you, but I found it appropriately in line with his opinions on video game violence and how he expressed them in Drak1 and Nier. I have faith in this too.

Do...do you know anything about the first Nier? This is a serious question, because Nier is a lot more than a character action game and would either delight or dismay you depending on how much you like Weird Shit in your games.
