Default Everyone in Smash Mouth is rich: The Shrek Thread

Shrek is the butt of many an internet joke but what do you think of the Shreks? I thought Shreks the Third was the worst most boring movie of the Shrek mythos. More like Shrek the TURD, right? I haven't seen much of Shreks Forever After but it was alright.

I quite liked Shrek 1: The First Shrek when I was younger but I don't know if I would do so now. I loved Shrek 2: Hardly Shrekkin'/E-Shrek-tic Boogaloo when I was younger also but when I revisited it later I thought it was a kind of gross and racist film. I haven't seen Pussing Boots because I can't be arsed, but I heard it was alright.

In closing I'm ready for Shrek 5.

How do you take your Shrek?

The composer for the Shrek stage musical is Jeanine Tesori, one of the best musical composers currently working. Her most recent work is Fun Home, an amazing adaptation of the Alison Bechdel graphic novel. She did Shrek for the paycheck, but still brought her considerable talent to the work. So everything about Shrek the Musical is terrible except for the music, which is great, and even then the lyrics are terrible.

Also, instead of hiring an actual little person to play the part of Lord Farquaad, who is a little person, they had a average-sized actor walk on his knees and designed a costume to disguise this fact. As you'd expect, walking on your knees for hours at a time every night will ruin them, and the actor had to take a sabbatical to get surgery and recover. And of course, the character is mocked mercilessly for being short.

In closing, Shrek the Musical is an awful minstrel show featuring music by one of the best talents in the biz.

The only memorable thing about this series was the anti-Disney hatred the first movie dripped with. It actually kinda set up Pixar's later stuff because I think there was still the sense at that point that every animated movie HAD to be a musical to keep the kids interested.

After that... well, at least Eddie and Myers get nice paydays out of it.

Yes, and it's incredible, and coming to Broadway. The cast recording of the original production at the Public is really great, too.

(Full disclosure: My husband works at the Public, so I have a vested interest in the show's success.)

I never saw any of them. Especially not Scared Shrekless.

No, that's not a joke title I made up. I saw it on a fast food menuboard. Apparently there were Shrek toys as parts of some kind of kids' meal being released at the same time there was a Halloween special thing on TV some years back. That really just about sums it up all up. Because it's a play on the phrase...

The animation looked ugly and shitty on the TV trailers so I always ignored them.

I saw Shrek 4-D at Universal Studios. It was a cute direct sequel of the first film.

The only thing I remember about Shrek is in my senior year of HS (02-03) it was our teachers' go-to movie for "we don't feel like teaching today, you can talk with each other or watch this dumb movie."

I liked the first one. But watching it again, it feels stale because it became Dreamwork's M.O. Best movie of the lot, I think it goes without saying.

Second one was good in the theaters. Not as good but still good at home. Not all the jokes are solid, but it has Antonio Banderas in it. I can't get enough of Captain Hook on the keyboard. If we're going to watch Shrek, I want to watch this one.

Third one sucked. The prince was a punchline, not a character.

Fourth one was the Eric Idle movie and I can't remember the rest.

They're making a fifth one??

I can't recall exactly which movies I've seen, but at least 1, 2 and 3. Each seems to be sort of lackluster. The first one is probably the least bad, but it's suffering from maybe a slight lack of ambition. The following movies are visually more versatile and bombastic, but the edge has worn off and the jokes range from okay to awkward.

God it's actually been a while since I watched Shrek. My mind definitely puts Shrek The First at a pretty high spot and I remember the sequel being fine and enjoyable too. I don't know that I ever watched #3 and I definitely didn't give a fuck about the cat movie. With how much the "X are like onions" line gets used in my life, that's gotta count for something right?

The Shrek franchise has given meme culture so much, and we should all be grateful. My favorite is:
