I'm going to recommend the Master and Margarita because everyone says I'm a bad person for not reading it and my knowledge of Russian lit is null outside of Dostoevsky

sure, i'll play, even though these things generally end up being too high falutin' for me.

I'd like to recommend Maximum City, a completely fascinating set of essays about Bombay, and different facets of life there, from sectarian violence to bollywood to gangsters and on.

Alt- Tokyo Vice, about the yakuza in Japan.

Final Alt- Heat, maybe my favorite book there is, about a journalist from the new yorker who apprentices himself into Mario Batali's kitchen, and what he learns about the inner workings of restaurants and food.

Hurrah hurrah hurrah.

I'd kinda like to put a Dickens on the list because I ought to read more Dickens and have a bad tendency to get stuck in the middle. Maybe "The Old Curiosity Shop"?

I've got a copy of Swann's Way that I've been meaning to read for ages. I'm also interested in getting Building Stories by Chris Ware or Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. But I'd also be interested in the Master and Margarita.

Mrs. Match's book club read that a year or two back. She seemed to think it was decent.

These are both great, although I'd push for Buford's earlier book, Among the Thugs.

*looks over at teetering pile of unread books*

Post-apocalyptic - The Windup Girl

Timely - Fair Play: The Moral Dilemmas of Spying

And one I've been thinking about re-reading - American Tabloid

Anything I'd suggest would probably be too low-class. ; ;

Given the news about Detroit, I'd suggest Detroit: An American Autopsy. I read it earlier this year but I can read it again.

I prefer the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation of pretty much any Russian work.

The Nook edition is $3.

EDIT - Reviews are saying the Nook edition is in Russian, not English.

In the meantime, could you update the first post to reflect the book choice? Pretty please?

I'm excited! I bought the P&V translation last year but hadn't cracked it open yet. This gives me an excuse.
