Fine, they're both the best film ever. But so is Trading Places.

How appropriate to resurrect this thread from the dead to gush about Pixar's new film:

I know it's only a trailer? But oh my gosh they got the everything right. I can't pick one thing to like best because everything was the best part.

Characters actually animated as playing a musical instrument correctly is one of my favorite things in the world.

And word to the naysayers, The Book Of Life's Jorge Gutierrez is in full support of this.

Can you elucidate? Genuinely curious.

One, the authenticity of the altar and its associated paraphernalia.

Two, that (assuming a modern-day setting) Miguel's watching an old VHS tape.

Three, his hero, Ernesto, is an amalgamation of many classic Mexican artists, but very very specifically the two eternal idols, Pedro Infante and Jorge Negrete:

(Couplet duel starts at :43)

Four, his dog is a xoloitzcuintle!

Five, Ernesto's song is original, but it absolutely passes for a classic Mexican ballad.

Six, he has an authentic, but not exaggerated, accent.

Seven, marigold! Marigold everywhere! Marigolds are THE flower that represents the Day of the Dead.

Right off the bat it lays out that the movie WILL be about the Day of the Dead, unlike Book of Life which spent only five minutes in that context.

Well I did know about the marigolds, thanks to WoW oddly enough. Thanks for the additional notes!

What Zef said. The Pedro Infante stand-in in particular is amazing. Really looking forward to this.

(Zef, wanna bet that there's going to be a joke on Dante about how Xolozcuintles are food?)

Kinda wish that had subtitles, because even hardly being able to pick up any of the lyrics it's obviously full of sick, sick burns.

It is! It's full of puns on their characters' last names, too (Jorge Bueno, "Good", and Pedro Malo, "Bad".)

Ah my movie marathon thread that died because I realized my write ups weren't particularly interesting if all I did was gush praise on every single one.

I dunno, that's how my cartoon watching threads usually wind up. Seems like it's a pretty Octo way of handling things.
