Yeah, I wanna say there were outfits letting you pre-order for like $180, $190? Kicking themselves now.

massdrop had it for 180, and now it's shut down.
SCG and CFB still have at 199.

I got into the Massdrop for $180 deal.

Watch this be the one Modern Masters set where I don't get my money's worth out of my box.

My understanding is that Modern is in need of a boost anyway, so this is probably a good thing. Still won't get the pros to like Modern.

Wow, I'll finally maybe be able to afford fetches for 80% of my commander decks.

Oh, right. For some idiotic reason I assumed Scalding Tarn and friends were in one of the earlier MMs (the reason being it's idiotic they weren't) so that didn't jump out at me at first.

And now ends Might of Old Krosa's reign as one of the most overpriced uncommons ever.

(we will for these purposes overlook Library of Alexandria)

I'd give that distinction to Dryad Arbor or, especially, Mishra's Bauble.

It's like someone at Wizards saw the lackluster reviews of Modern Masters 2015 and said, "Let's do the complete opposite".

Yeah, aside from a few more junk mythics than last time this is totally the free candy set.

Talking with wotc folks at GDC, i learned that basically they hadn't anticipated that mm 1 would take off as much as it had, or that the format itself was that viable, and that's why mm2 was so bad. They'd kinda painted themselves into a corner, and it's only now they figured out how to better balance included cards, availability, and print runs with the consumer desire.

Basically, they now take the cards they want to reprint first and then build the environment around that, instead of the other way around. MM15 had some reprints in mind, but was more designed on archtypes. They realized quickly how flat they fell when they included daybreak coronet but then removed that entire archtype from the set. It's better now.

It would have made so much more sense if they had included Thoughtseize in MM15 and Daybreak Coronet in Theros.

Got our initial shipment of MM17 in and...it's a lot. If they keep this in the pipeline like they did with Eternal Masters, a lot of cards are gonna bottom right the fuck out.

I wonder how much of that is planned. Isn't a lot of the stuff in there a mandatory four-of in multiple archetypes?

The first, probably flawed, association I make is with the flood of elder dragons we had when they did Chronicles.

That resulted in the Reserved list, which still hamstrings WOTC's ability to reprint relevant cards.

This will simply result in cheaper Modern staples and some format shakeups, viz. Pauper.

Good argument that this is a planned supply boost. I still think the Reserved list was an overreaction, but I guess they had to restore faith with their dealers somehow.

Actually, I'm curious to see how Modern Masters affects the Pauper metagame. There's a lot of relevant cards that have been rarity-shifted to common that would give the format some fresh twists.

Augur of Bolas would be decent in blue/black and blue/red.

Burning-Tree Emissary could see use in zoo and storm decks.

Cower in Fear is worthwhile tech against token decks, and makes for great removal in monoblack.

Falkenrath Noble is very splashable and has a great impact, so I think we can expect it in a lot of black decks.

Some Bogles lists could find a use for Gift of Orzhova, I'm sure.

Magma Jet is excellent for burn and blue-red control decks.

Monoblack control loves Edict effects, so Mortician Beetle could be pretty good.

I could see Revive being used in stompy or elves.

Maybe Thunderous Wrath in UR control? There's lots of scry effects to be had.

And I'm sure someone will find a way to abuse Tandem Lookout.

the thing is, a lot of these prices really need to bottom out, because they're staples, not investment cards. The fetches, for instance, are so fundamental to modern/legacy/vintage decks that they really have no business being so expensive. Damnation is artificially high. Liliana and Snaps and Goyf and Cavern will retain a lot of value even if they lose 20 bucks off the top.

I don't see this being chronicles all over again at all, given where the game and the audience is at now vs where it was 3 years into its existence.

Looking back, the funniest thing about Chronicles was how many of the "money" reprints in there were totally unplayable. The game did a lot of growing in the first 5 years.

Looks like someone pulled an Amonkhet card from a booster pack, with a flashy new mechanic:

Something like:

Dusk - Sorcery - 2WW
Destroy all creatures with power 3 or greater.

Dawn - Sorcery - 3WW
Aftermath - Cast this spell only from your graveyard, then exile it.
Return all creature cards with power 2 or less from your graveyard to your hand.

The numbering can't be right. It's a white card, but it's 210/269.

I suspect because it has two names the put them after the non-split cards. They did that with the mono-red split cards in Planar Chaos and gold split cards in Dragon's Maze.

Back when Amonkhet was announced, I predicted (or, if you will, prophesied) that Consecrated Sphinx would be in the set. Thank goodness I was proven right. The Mirrodin Besieged version looks awful, and I've been running non-optimized replacements in my Commander decks because I refuse to own one.

I'm totally buying two or three of these.

Christ, who approved that typeface for the title/creature lines?

i think that if the font weren't completely awful chinese menu style fakey bullshit, these would actually be pretty cool. the art is amazing, especially for wrath and dark rit, but christ, the title and body fonts are just awful.

I hate the frames, I hate how hard it is to read the color identity (seriously, can't you use some of that pale blue on the mama symbol) but what really gets me is the extra text on the name lines of the cards where they don't fill the entire textbox. Maybe the foiling will make the real text stand out, but that's just so fucking awful I don't even know.

If they wanted to do something weird and ancient-Egyptianish they should have used a more normal font (text box font is fine) and vertical text boxes for the name/type.

The art is good but damn does that frame make it look cramped (it is nice to see something other than "art going out of the frame" at least).
