At least Best Picture went to Moonlight. Even watching the short clip they showed made me feel a twinge of emotion.

Of all possible upsets, I'm really surprised it was Moonlight, too. It makes me wonder if it was a close race all around. Second genuinely great movie in a row to win Best Pic.

So glad that Moonlight won. It makes a big difference for a film like this, which will get a much wider audience than it could have otherwise (not just in the US but also especially around the world) thanks to this win.

lol at casey fucking affleck over denzel washington tho

Affleck is actually great in Manchester by the Sea, which is one of the all-around better BP nominees in recent memory, IMO. The harassment allegations definitely took a lot of the shine off of his win, though.

I still don't quite know what to make of this Moonlight win. The artsy movie never wins. This is like if Boyhood won, or the Social Network, or Lost in Translation. Either way I'm pleasantly surprised.

I haven't seen Manchester or Fences but I haven't gotten the impression that Denzel was particularly amazing in the latter. Dude's got two statues.

Had to edit my post because it gave the opposite of the intended meaning. Not out here defending rapists but I don't know that Denzel losing is a travesty.

Edited the post again because I worded it correctly the first time, lol

Kimmel is on Simmons' podcast telling Oscars stories with Cousin Sal*, and he pointed out that the screwup was a gigantic missed opportunity:

- Best Actor and Actress rotate as the second-last category.
- This year, of course, Actress was second-last.
- If it was the other way around - and the guy from PWC does everything else exactly, which I suppose is the flaw in this theory - the envelope at the end would've been Casey Affleck's for Manchester By The Sea.
- So Faye Dunaway could've gone with that movie.
- Manchester By The Sea's award, if it had won, would've been accepted by its producer, Matt Damon.

So the scenario at the end of the show would've been Kimmel trying to yank the Best Picture award away from Matt Damon. As Jimmy said "if that had happened, we'd still be on stage fighting."

* - Sal had a five-way parlay ruined by the screwup, as he had La La Land to win. Poor guy.

Searching for something to distract Isley for a few minutes while I got ready this morning and it appears that there is a sequel to Mr. Roger's neighborhood currently airing on PBS. It stars a cartoon tiger rather than a kindly Christian. Seems completely watchable but not sure how I feel about this. I haven't seen this stupid tiger change his cardigan or shoes once!

No exquisitely detailed city model with working trolley, no sale.

(Gods, how much I just wanted to live in Mr. Rogers' house with the train as a kid.)

I saw a stage performance of the Rocky Horror Show last night.

Sword of Damocles is a really good song and it's a shame it was cut from the film.

Edit: wait, the wiki is saying it was in the film but not on the soundtrack? I don't remember it all though.

Take-away: I'm super stupid I'm sorry I posted

Edit edit edit: I reviewed the film version. The song is a bit overshadowed by antics, maybe that's why it didn't stand out.

Hulk talks about Logan some, but this is mostly reflection on the difference between the storytelling function and the "essence" of movies, and how his preference for the former often puts him on the flip side of popular opinion. I thought it was good.

I think it's also worth noting that he's completely ditched the Hulk-speak, including the "Hulk" pronouns.

I used to find his staunch refusal to do this annoying, but after sticking to his guns for so long I can't help but find this disappointing now. He was a bulwark in these dark times.

I don't consider myself an anime guy, but damned if I've ever seen any pieces of media more Octo than One Punch Man.

It makes me pleased to see that Kirk Douglas, age 100, is still around.

I'm not surprised. The man probably still eats railroad spikes and blasting caps for breakfast.

My Unpopular Opinion: Rick and Morty is just "ok".

I'm about halfway through season 2. I've found it amusing, but had only one genuine belly laugh so far. Found it sometimes went too far for the sake of being edgy and 2real4u. I hope it redeems itself at some point because I expected better considering how much the internet touches itself over this.

If you aren't a fan by this point, I doubt there's anything in the back half of the second season that will convince you.

The eddddddddgy is lighter in the second season, but still so very tedious.

The host for the first episode of the new Have I Got News For You season is Sir Patrick Stewart (first time hosting, unbelievably).

My expectations are sky-high (although there's a Labour MP as one of the panelists, which means that every bit is going to end with some variant on taking shots at Corbyn's impending doom, but then again that's when the show's at its funniest.)

Mixed feelings about stuff like this. Most people will try to be decent in a calm, one-on-one setting (especially while obviously being monitored). Most people are very capable of being decent human beings in the right context. That doesn't make execrable dehumanizing opinions any less execrable.

It's interesting though that it seemed to be the right-wingers who were immediately willing to backtrack their opening positions when faced with an actual human being affected by them - unless that's just careful editing by the ad makers who are of course trying to create something uplifting as the whole point of the exercise. (I'm also curious if there were "failed" runs that they just didn't show at all... or if the whole thing was more or less staged if I'm being really cynical, but hopefully not. I don't think the outcome is totally implausible or anything.)

That said, we probably *could* solve an awful lot of the world's problems overnight if we could magically make everyone get to know an extremely diverse group of people in a positive environment.

It's nice, but I don't trust any ad designed to sell me something.
