Default Biblenauts

Sprite got a webcomic?!?!

I figure at least some folks here will be interested in this. It's a comic I've been wanting to do for a long time, one which explores the Hebrew Bible in satirical comic strip format, and doesn't pull punches. From my About Page:

Quote:
The Bible stands as one of the most important literary collections in history. Religions and cultures have risen and fallen on the strength of its pages. Millions have pledged their lives to it without even needing to read it. It’s just that neat.

Biblenauts is a comic about two kids trapped in the Bible. Together with their quirky guide, they’ll witness the adventures of the story of Israel. Experience the Bible in a way you never have before, unless you have already read the Bible, in which case the jokes are still pretty good.

Biblenauts updates every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
I'm planning to explore some of the more upsetting stories as well, stories which don't often see adaptation, so please look forward to/watch out for that. Also, here's the first page:

This is a cool idea!

I love that you're not pulling punches here.

NOTE: Biblenauts is an adaptation of stories found in the Bible. These stories may contain content such as attempted genocide, slavery, sexual violence, gendered violence, cartoon violence, cartoon nudity, and millenia-old cuss words. Parental guidance is strongly recommended. Readers with emotional or mental triggers should exercise caution. The views and opinions expressed in this comic strip do not necessarily reflect the opinions of God or his affiliates.
And I am DIGGIN the little golem guy. Yeah guys I said it! Digging! >:[

Does the Hebrew on his head spell out his name, or does it mean something else?

It's "emeth", the word that traditionally goes on golem foreheads.

Ok, this is awesome.

First of all, yes.

Second of all, yes please.

Third, I saw this today right after seeing your comic: http://i.imgur.com/ggWWF73.png and it reminded me of Biblenauts, so I came back here to post it for no reason. In marketing terms, that means you have a good niche. When readers see a bible-themed comic they are more likely to remember Biblenauts if they're already familiar with you, even in passing, and would resultingly possibly check the site.

Fourth, great website, I have a few critiques and I pm-ed them to your inbox because I'm terrible.

Huh, that's odd. I've always heard the word pronounced "eh-met", and as far as I know there's no equivalent to a "th" sound from English. How come you're spelling it "Emeth"?

More than one romanization system exists for Hebrew. Using a "th" to romanize hebrew doesn't mean you're making the English "th" sound.

The roman alphabet used by English isn't tied primarily to English sounds. Many languages use the same roman alphabet to create totally different sounds. For languages not primarily written in roman characters, there are frequently competing romanization systems that exist parallel to each other for different purposes.

For example, one system might be more linguistically consistent, while another might be more intuitive for a non-expert but obscure important linguistic information. A linguist writing an academic paper would probably use the former, but a government creating signage for tourists might use the latter.

Now I have the image of a baby Eve connected to Adam's rib cage by an umbilical cord stuck in my head. Thanks for that.

Oh, I should plug my comic's appearance in this month's BLEEP Magazine. It's a Comic Con themed issue, so there's lots of fun stuff there besides me.

I was glad you guys liked Friday's comic so much, because it's the strip I chose to represent Biblenauts in the article.

You're asking questions the story has no interest in answering, as it doesn't address whether the snake has legs or why the snake can talk. You can interpret the snake as having legs if you want. Personally I think the crawling isn't the punishment, but eating dirt and having enmity with the woman's progeny. Similarly, the woman is not cursed with childbirth, but pain during childbirth, and the man is not cursed with work (God created him to work in the garden), but painful work.

I might be wrong, though. I haven't drilled down into the Hebrew of the snake's punishment in a while.

Pretty sweet Uriel there. Scary lookin' dude. The cherubim are not adorable little flying babies.

I never understood why angels were always drawn as attractive white guys with bird wings. Is almost as if the medieval artists that popularized the image never read one of the scary descriptions of celestial beings in the Bible. The guys who wrote those books were hardcore, yo.

Sprite, could you explain a bit how did you come to your depiction of the cherubim? Was it based in a particular source?

I think part of it is that the descriptions in the Bible are usually pretty hard to realize visually. I don't think I've ever seen a painting of the Throne which approaches the weird abstract wheels-within-wheels description in Ezekiel.

Genesis 3 doesn't describe the cherubim, so I took some liberties. Honestly, the image which has influenced my mental picture of cherubim the most is this cover art from A Wind in the Door, which depicts the character Proginoskes:

I think "don't molest the neighbors" is an important lesson that GI Joe and He-Man never bothered to cover.

All of you who are bothered by all those "God is a prick" stories in the Old Testament might want to just skip this whole story arc.

And as long as we're on the subject; Sprite, are you going to be covering the book of Job?

Job is pretty much the best bit of writing in the Hebrew Bible, so yeah. If all goes according to plan, yes, Job is on the docket. That's a long way away, though.

So I've come to the Book of Kings in my Bible-reading, and I just can't wait until you get to Elijah making fun of the Baal prophets.
