In any case most creators don't make the jump from web comics to big two without a lower profile transition.

Well, even North didn't come straight from Dinosaur Comics.

In early X-Men comics, a big component of every fight is that Angel will punch a guy, because it's not like has has anything else to do. This is kind of funny, because his power is just that he has wings. If anyone's going to just punch a guy, it should probably be Beast, the one person on the team with super strength.

My favorite instance of Angel Punches a Guy was when Juggernaut showed up and Angel thought, "Well, he survived all the explosives we set up as a trap, and Cyclops blasting him has no effect. But maybe his secret weakness is just a regular punch from a regular guy with maybe slightly above average punching ability?!"

I also like this one, where he is way, way too overconfident in his ability to punch Quicksilver and gets frustrated when someone with a useful superpower for fighting helps out.

It also has the nice kicker where Iceman has already encased Quicksilver in ice, and then Beast generously offers to immobilize a person who is already frozen.

How do you feel about Iceman's boots?

When did Angel start lugging around that bazooka? He's got it on the cover of X-Men #1, but he doesn't use it inside the issue.

I read somewhere that Marvel got lots of angry letters when Iceman lost the boots—that he just looks ridiculous if he's not wearing nothing but a pair of little black booties.

Well yeah. He's constantly producing ice and stepping on it --without the boots, he risks a serious injury from slipping!

boots provide traction his ice feet do not, they're integral to his character

Come to think of it, does that style of boot have a name? I've only seen X-Men and Captain America in it --maybe pirates, but those usually part at the front (with optional buckles and high heels) while these ones go all the way around.

Yup, they're called Pirate Boots. And they do seem to be ubiquitous in Silver Age superhero comics. Sometimes they have that part in the front, but mostly they're solid all around. They make for a useful design element to break up the monotony of the human silhouette.

Or, conversely, to disguise the fact that you are a coward who refuses to train calves.

He never gets that bazooka. I don't think that idea made it past the cover. It's too bad, really. Teenager with angel wings lugging around a huge bazooka is pretty classic goofy 60s comics imagery.

They did eventually solve his lack of offensive power in the most 90s way, though
