Even a sequel to a game nobody played is more of a sure bet than a new IP, so it's not that weird.

If I had to pick between Last Guardian, FFVII Remake, Shenmue 3 KS and NieR 2 being real...

I think I'd have gone with Shenmue.

I'm just surprised they didn't have to cart off the Sony conference attendees in stretchers.

EDIT: Also the gonzo success of XIV 2.0 may have sold them on second chances for things with negative chances of revival.

Also: I will preorder the FFVII remake and buy the FFX/X-2 PS4 ports just to fund this thing.

Unfortunately you can't skip a lot of the dungeons whose gimmick is "be as unfun as possible". Although I look forward to the ability to sip the kool-aid by having this game be good! Thanks Platinum!

not saying it's a bad thing, but at this point i have a hard time imagining what a "fun" taro game would be like

maybe it'll be about something different than usual

or maybe we'll get a game about how fucked up violence is, with mechanical direction from the guy who made revengeance ahahaa

At this point a Taro game being fun would be a complete subversion of his style, which is also completely his style from what I understand. Everyone wins!

NieR Automata, which may be related to the play Yoko Taro directed, which itself sounds an awful lot like the comic he writes.

I wasn't back on the boards when this was announced at E3, but just to let everyone know that my response to the news was as powerful as could be expected, upon hearing it I said "IT ISN'T OPTIONAL ANYMORE" and bought a PS4 that weekend.

Dept, did you play Drakengard 3? That did a good job of sucking out all the immense goodwill I had from Nier and my hopes for Nier 2.

Nope! I was going to, but my PS3 abruptly died just a month or two before it released.

Maybe...maybe to keep me from playing Drakengard 3?...

i'm simply not ever going to agree that drakengard 3 wasn't good, because it was, and it seems to me that a lot of people have some kind of overblown conception of nier as a really highbrow game or something

(to be clear though, i agree with your conclusion; if you hated dod3 then i sure wouldn't get your hopes up)

Really, Platinum being involved is the only thing that's got me the slightest bit interested in this. Nier fell apart for me in a lot of ways, not the least of which was severely fumbling with its own themes.

I agree with spineshark. Drakengard 3 is a good game in a way 1 and that imaginary game between them never tried to be (because one was focusing on making you question why you're still playing and the other was focusing on making it the most soulless grind it could be). Also Drakengard 3 mostly plays well with its main drawback being the engine it was made in causing performance issues. It doesn't have the strength of design that something like Platinum's new Transformers game has so its enemies aren't as interesting/challenging and the combos aren't as varied (and sections controlling the dragon aren't great), but otherwise it feels pretty dang similar to me. That's not to say it wasn't cringe-worthy in plenty of other ways though.

In terms of what that means to Nier 2... I don't see a reason not to have hope for it just for not liking Drakengard 3? Nier was way different than the Drakengard games so I really think Nier 2 will keep with that. Unless I missed an interview or something where Yoko Taro said he wanted to implement lessons learned from Drakengard 3 in the development of Nier 2 and that Platinum is just a writing consultant or something. If you didn't like the first Nier though then yeah, I'd imagine the prospect of Nier 2 isn't exactly exciting.

Yep. Drakengard 3 was a Drakengard game, not a Nier one. Under those terms, I found it perfectly enjoyable --even though I'm still waiting for a massive price drop on the Sisters DLC.

nier has a lot of stuff that drakengard doesn't, yeah. definitely, it's more of an adventure and there's a lot more design in areas. it's reasonable to expect more of that kind of thing, but i think as a one-off to this point it's very not clear what kind of identity nier has as a series! they told us right out that the main character is very different, which is a big deal, and i would be surprised if taro went for similar core ideas for the story and setting either. i'm sure it'll be nearer to nier than drakengard 3 was, but i admit i'm not certain if that means close enough

like, after all, there's tons of people who apparently only like one of persona 3 or 4 and those are...basically the same thing really

I really hope this somehow lands on steam. While I'm dreaming, I'd like a port of the first game. And a pony.

And that was how Taro Yoko introduced Kainé to My Little Pony.

I know I'm not the only one who sometimes wonders if Yoko Taro derives some (possibly sexual) kind of pleasure from hurting his own sales.

Uh... I wouldn't so as far to say sexual, but I think it's pretty clear he enjoys screwing with his audience:

Quote:
A couple of Yoko's ideas that were cut out or rejected during development included a fully contemporary setting with a school-girl protagonist, and calling the game Drakengard 4 instead of Drakengard 3, with the story revolving around searching for the missing installment in the series.

Finally Drakengard could stand alongside the illustrious Leisure Suit Larry 5: Passionate Pattie Does A Little Undercover Work

I have never even seen a picture of a Drakengard game or know anything about them, but that idea is objectively better than anything Drakengard 3 ever could've been.
