This is really good and addictive.

I'm pretty much stuck in Zone 2. Having a hard time getting anywhere unless I get a weapon drop before I take too much damage. 3/4 tempo owns me.

I finally got this game myself (/dance! thanks!), and uh, it's pretty fantastic. Like, amazing. Addictive. Adorable. And teeth-grittingly difficult, in that fantastic sort of way.

It's in early alpha access, so there are gaps in the game. Only four of the total characters are available, and only the first three worlds are open Though, there's hard mode, challenges, and local co-op, and the game's plenty difficult enough that three worlds will take you quite a while to clear. In my opinion, it's definitely worth getting now.

If you really don't care for the idea of a rhythm rogue-like, there's a character called the Bard that allows you to bypass the whole dancing/rhythmic-movement part of the game. However, it significantly lowers the difficulty of the game (which certainly might be a plus) but also depletes much of the fun of Necrodancer (which is certainly a matter of opinion).

Only six of my friends have this, apparently, which is a travesty. If you're on the fence, I highly recommend it. :3

I think my only issue is that right now (and I may be missing something) you pick one of the three zones and then start there naked. I have a very hard time starting zone 2 with just a dagger, usually once I find a weapon I can do okay.

I suspect this is fixed in hardcode mode and I know it's not the case in the Daily Challenge (having watched BEAT thoroughly trounce area one and two in yesterday's)? Strange that it's no the case in free play or whatever the default mode is.

Also the learning curve on this game is fantastic, there's a huge sense of improvement as you plan and things happen as such a fast place that it eventually reaches a point where you're almost working faster than you can consciously think. It's possibly the most fun and rewarding game to learn I've played in years.

Kinda pleased with my score in today's Daily, even if I didn't quite pull the win out.

Alas, the replay seems to be desynched. At least the desynch issues don't appear to be too platform-specific, unlike with Brogue; I die taking a crown of thorns on 3-1 replaying in both Windows and Linux (in reality, I died getting mobbed on 3-3 after being reduced to half a heart by the crown and murdering my way back to full health).

Some interesting things I learned while researching that:
  • Replay integrity seems to be at least partly based on playback speed. Replaying at hyperspeed (on Windows, at least) caused me to die on 2-3. Replay at mostly normal speed (except for a small amount of turbo at the start) caused me to fall into a pit on the same floor. Neither was actually correct, but one let me continue watching.
  • Replay data seems to be compartmentalized on a per-floor basis, rather than just being a raw input stream. The 2-3 replay is terribly corrupt, but after I stumbled into a pit in the replay I saw normal behavior against the boss.
  • Switching operating systems lets you play the Daily more than once. This is, of course, stupid, so I didn't do it.

So a new patch dropped today (or maybe yesterday, not sure). There's a few minor tweaks, couple items added, but the big news is the Monk character. His upside is that he gets one free item from every shop - including transmorphing and blood shops. The downside? He's taken an oath of poverty and immediately dies whenever he touches gold.

He's a lot harder to play than you'd think, though the free item every shop is pretty sweet.

Just noticed this thread existed, I'm loving this game so far.

I love how they added Monk, sure it's just a new character but it completely changes how you play the game. Playing Monk also seems to have improved my gameplay with non-monk characters.

Dailies still seem like I do really good or a stupid mistake takes me out right away. Managed 3rd place so far on today's daily.

FYI: Ring of Courage's invulnerable beat will not protect you from violating a monk's vow of poverty.

(i.e. that ring's a deathtrap, avoid)

On a similar note (har), you should never touch a Shrine of Risk as Aria.

So what's the word so far on playing this game with a dance pad? From what I had heard, people were saying that it was a fun, goofy way to play, but that the "real" game was using the keyboard. I won't lie to you folks, the idea of playing it with a dance pad sounds really, really stupid awesome, and I'd love to give it a try. But is it worth investing in a cheapo $15 from China to play it that way?

I think you would want to make sure you like the base game play first but since I do I'd think a game pad would be really fun.

For refrence there is a specific dancepad mode with a better starting inventory and fewer monsters.

I'm tempted to get this but
  • I tend to suck at roguelikes
  • I really don't want to encourage early release stuff.

The game isn't super...complicated, I guess? It relies on the rhythm aspect to force you to make decisions quickly and mess up, while in a turn-based roguelike there might be situations where you need to be familiar with everything you have available and take a little while to make a decision when you find yourself in danger.

Just wait for the final release.

But you see, this is why I'm a bit skeptical. If they have to dumb the game down, does that mean it isn't good to play on the dance pad? Or is it lots of fun even with the lowered challenge? I really want to try it, but I don't want to invest in any pads unless I know I'm going to like it.

Hmm, I think my upstairs neighbour has some dance pads, maybe I can borrow one from him long enough to test the game out...

Of all the things your upstairs neighbors 'might' have, dance pads seem like they'd be near the top of the 'not really in question' list.

Dance pad mode is pretty fun, really, I play it from time just to enjoy it. The game already gives you a wide array of options for difficulty and if you think dance pad is too easy play hardcore or one of the challenge characters. It's just there for more options.

I've had a few early release games burn me lately, but I feel like this game could already be considered finished in its current state.

Weird, I know I've gotten to 3-2 before, but I guess it lists score instead of farthest distance in?

Anyway, congrats! That's fantastic. :3 Gonna watch that replay.

Anyone want to drop a hint on what Phase Daggers do? Got one on a recent run and couldn't figure it out.

Try using it with a ring or attacking a hard to hit enemy.

For a complete spoiler: Can attack from inside walls with Ring of Phasing, can attack ghosts while transparent. Kills Zone 3 ghasts in a single shot. Damages armadillos even when they are rolling. Does damage through the shields of armored skeletons, death metal, zone 3 beetles, etc.

New high score: 6613.

Has anyone else noticed that most of this game's achievements are, uh, kind of hard?
