I mean, if you don't think BotW is a good pick for number 1 that's fine, but it would be nice to get an argument more substantive than "it's too new".
Look, I actually wrote "This is a joke" with a little arrow pointing to what I just wrote, I mean, I didn't think this would be unclear. I guess I can see that it might look like I'm saying the list/pick is a joke, but I meant that the thing I said was a joke.

I thought you were referring to the "Way to go, guys" as the joke, as in you were laying it on extra thick that you were being sarcastic there. My apologies, I misunderstood you.

Here's mine:

1. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
2. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
3. Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne
4. Devil May Cry 3
5. Persona 5
6. Dark Souls
7. Persona 4
8. Etrian Odyssey IV
9. Persona 3
10. Shin Megami Tensei Digital Devil Saga 2
11. Guilty Gear Xrd
12. KOF XIII
13. Breath of the Wild
14. Mega Man Zero 2
15. Metal Gear Solid 2
16. Metal Gear Solid 3
17. Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power
18. Kirby Planet Robobot
19. A Link Between Worlds
20. Onimusha 3
21. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time
22. Shin Megami Tensei IV
23. Bravely Default
24. Street Fighter IV
25. Mario Golf Toadstool Tour

Sorry about not being able to get to Persona 4, Issun! Work was swampin' me, and I have a bit more trouble talking specifically about that game because I played it 3-4 years ago.

I really did not expect BotW to be number one but boy am I happy that it got there because that game is sweet!

Biggest disappointments:
- Devil May Cry 3 I believe really deserves to be on this list and to this day is THE template for all stylish action games. It ages like a fine wine.
- Any Fire Emblem game, but particularly Path of Radiance. I could have put any or all of the series on my list and I feel like because there are so many it split the votes, which is unfortunate. Tactical RPG is my favourite genre and I think that the FE series is the best execution of that genre gameplay wise.
- Persona 5 was really good guys and I feel if the 3/4 are on there, this one should be too. I wonder how it will be perceived as time goes on?
- Guilty Gear Xrd is the best fighting game ever made.

Really loved watching this thing come together! Fantastic job Issun!

I didn't vote for any game released this year precisely because some time games age badly, or some time after adrenaline has faded you realize that there were some critical flaws. FFVII is my poster boy for this - still a good game, but not the jRPG to end all JRPGs I thought it was the first time I saw Meteor smash into Midgard.

If it weren't for that personal rule of mine, Persona 5 would have been near the top of my list. I haven't finished it, but when I'm not playing P5 all I can think about is about playing P5.

Bolded did not make it.

Quote:
1. Portal
2. Spec Ops: The Line
3. Undertale
4. Overwatch
5. Rhythm Heaven Gold
6. Hotline Miami
7. Antichamber
8. GOD HAND
9. Bioshock
10. Saya no Uta
11. Psychonauts
12. The World Ends With You
13. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective
14. Batman: Arkham Asylum
15. Resident Evil 4
16. Blank Dream
17. Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon
18. Ratchet & Clank 3: Up Your Arsenal
19. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
20. Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney
21. Guitar Hero
22. Okami
23. I Wanna Be the Guy
24. Digimon World 3
25. Desktop Dungeons
You could say I had a fairly big miss but really I had trouble just picking out 25; I have not played nearly enough games I consider "good enough" for this kind of list. The last two entries on my list are there purely for my own nostalgia for instance.

I had a lot of fun reading everyone's experiences!

Ohhhhhhh God Hand was a thing I forgot. Shame on me!

spineshark, I greatly appreciate your inclusion of Digital Devil Saga 2 as I think it is arguably the best SMT game.

"Splitting the vote" or not, I think you only have yourselves to blame. I voted for 3 Touhou games, 3 Zelda games and was close to putting 4 Castlevania games. Gotta fly your fandom flag.

^Don't forget to take the straw poll. So far, 39% of you have played 31+ of these games. Wow!

For me: I've only played 14 of the top 50 (and 4 of the top 10.)

However, the top 50 does have many games that I haven't played but plan to, all of which I would expect to be candidates for my top X games:

dosboot's must play list
#29: Bloodborne
#26: Ōkami
#25: Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan
#13: ICO
#10: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds
#5: Shadow of the Colossus
#1: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

And I own most of these too!

I've played (Played, certainly not beaten) 42 of these, so now I know how much of a fuckin' nerd I am!

And I guess I should play Undertale and Portal, as those are the two games on the top ten I haven't played. I'll probably get to Undertale. Portal on the other hand does not interest me at all.

My main criteria was whether I thought there was something memorable about the game. I had nine make the list. Quite a few that only I voted for. I tried not to worry too much about whether I was throwing my votes away on stuff that wasn't going to make it.

01 Bee (Browser) - I said what I wanted to about this in one of the bonus posts. It was the most effective game experience I can remember.
02 Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (PS2) - Surprised this didn't make it. The mechanics are interesting, I liked the world even though usually I'm not in to super grim stuff, and I liked the taciturn protagonist.
03 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP)
04 Ico (PS2)
05 Etrian Odyssey (DS)
06 Valkyria Chronicles (PS3)
07 Cave Story (PC/Wii)
08 The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky (PSP)
09 Picross DS (DS) - This might be the game I've spent more time on than any other.
10 Her Story (iPad)
11 Suikoden III (PS2)
12 Riviera: The Promised Land (PSP) - Not sure how well I'd like the harem stuff if I played it these days, but I enjoyed its variance from the usual JRPG structure, particularly the limits it placed on your actions.
13 Nier (PS2)
14 Dark Souls (PS3)
15 Another Code: Two Memories (aka Trace Memory) (DS) - I think this was the first DS game I played. I remember being really sad near the end.
16 Final Fantasy XII (PS2)
17 Psychonauts (PS2)
18 Yggdra Union: We'll Never Fight Alone (PSP) - Like Riviera, I enjoyed how different it was. I also liked how in the middle part of the game when your character is losing her moral compass you encounter some typical JRPG heroes as enemies and crush them. And how the character wearing a cool hat won't equip other hats, and illiterate characters can't use books and that sort of thing.
19 Retro Game Challenge (DS)
20 Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 (PS2)
21 80 Days (iPhone) - A really neat, fun game.
22 Jeanne D'Arc (PSP)
23 La Mulana (Wii)
24 Rondo of Swords (DS) - Another game that mixes up the formula a bit. Gets really hard and doesn't explain some of its mechanics very well, but I enjoyed it a lot.
25 Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? (PSP) - Not as skeevy as the sequel (which I haven't played but looks pretty skeevy), I thought it had solid mechanics (though I wasn't playing a lot of platformers at the time). I think I injured my hand fighting the last boss.

For similar reasons I only put two Sonic games on my list. (Like a lot of rhythm games, Sonic has tended toward a pretty iterative style of design that means any two games coming out in near succession are pretty similar to each other, so the later games are usually just better-refined versions of the ones before it, at least on the same platform)

Nothing in my top 5 made it. my own fault for spending points on unlikely games
- FFXI - i spent so much time on this, so i feel obligated to vote for it
- Civ 4 - same. i like that i know it well. civ5 brought a lot of new folk to the game, so i'm glad, but 4 still has a soft spot in my heart
- Mass Effect - 2 is the better game and deserved its spot.
- Sim City 4 - the last great sim city game. some of the mods made it really fun.
- Red Dead Redemption - The slower pace of the old west was right up my ally compared to other GTA games. I liked the story more though it suffers from huge cognitive dissonance where Marston is trying to be a good guy while also killing hundreds (Nathan Drake Disease?). Can't wait for RDR2.

I had a lot of hits in the 6-20 range. I focused on games that were just plain fun from start to finish for me.
- Kingdom Hearts
- Uncharted
- Guitar Hero
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Batman: Arkham Asylum
- Bully

In the bottom 5, Halo and CoD4 were on my list for being the big developments for FPS that the modern world is still dealing with. I also had Wii Sports. It was responsible for selling the Wii to the masses. Sure, that led to an era of waggle that many would prefer to forget, but I think it was definitely an influential game

Edit:
wow, looking at the total list:
- arkham asylum at 51 so close
- ha, wii sports had 6 votes. i don't feel bad now. same for Mass Effect, Kingdom Hearts, Civ 4, RDR, Halo and CoD4.
- hey, someone else voted for FFXI!!
- lots of games I should have voted for
- surprised at so few votes for Witcher 3
- wow 3 voters for CK2!
- Even down in the single votes, there's a lot there I would definitely have considered voting for.

Contra 4 was the top game (according to TT's combined ranking) that I voted for, but didn't make it. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia was second, then Skyward Sword.

Code:
Name Points Votes
Contra 4 94 4
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia 79 4
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword 67 4
Somehow Twilight Princess got fewer votes and points than every 3D Zelda released since 2000, which is all of them except OoT. That's a respectable opinion I guess, but man it really doesn't seem like such a big leap to me to see how TP compares equally or favorably to every 3D Zelda before BOTW. Out of a large group, I would have expected it to stick closer to the others.

No one else voted for AM2R... :/

Absolutely not. It's got new graphics, new script, new mechanics, and it's portable.

I can promise you that the graphics and mechanics are 99% ported over, with the smallest of changes to fit things on the GBA screen instead of a TV. Well, again, aside from the bonus dungeon.

Script and portability, sure. But it's still basically the same game. And I say this as someone who likes FF5.

My list. Games in bold were not featured.

1. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - In retrospect it's one of the weaker Smash games, but I'd never anticipated a game so hard before, and never been so frustrated at news of a delay. I spent so many hours playing this game.

2. Metroid Prime
3. Katamari Damacy
4. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

5. Pokemon Black/White - It got me back into Pokemon after I lost interest during Gen II, and still ranks as one of my favorite Pokedexes across all generations. It also improved or removed many of the things I found annoying or stressful about earlier 'mon games.

6. Mass Effect 2

7. Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 - The main (non-Smash) fighting game of my high school years. Hilariously unbalanced but so much fun to play.

8. Super Smash Bros. Melee

9. Metroid Fusion - I get that the mission-based structure can be a drag but it was such a thrill to be playing as Samus again after almost a decade of her absence.

10. R-Type Final - This game is probably most responsible for getting me into SHMUPs and probably has the best worldbuilding of any SHMUP, maybe. It took me a year to unlock all 100+ ships.

11. Pokemon Sun/Moon - The things they did to streamline the experience in this generation were genius, and there are so many cool ideas in the new designs.

12. The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker
13. Undertale

14. Transformers: War For Cybertron - I bought an Xbox 360 just to play this game, and it was 100% worth the price of admission. Like Batman, Transformers seem like a concept easy to make into a video game, but it took this long for someone to get it right. And the sequel, Fall of Cybertron, is even better.

15. Skyrim

16. Rock Band - I spent too many hours playing this in college for it not to make the list.

17. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
18. Shovel Knight
19. WarioWare, Inc.: Mega MicroGame$!
20. Resident Evil 4

21. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - The best of the DS Castlevanias.

22. Cave Story

23. Super Robot Wars Original Generation 2 - Learning about SRW in college prompted me to mod my PS2 to play them and start learning to read Japanese. I love the game series enough that I even enjoy the OG series, which only features characters created specifically for the game (normally they are pulled from various robot anime).
24. Super Smash Brothers 4 - Probably the best in the series, as it married the party-oriented Brawl with the concepts beloved by the tourney scene from Melee. You can have your cake and eat it too. The only reason this isn't ranked much higher is because it didn't become a household/party fixture like Brawl and the other Smashes did before it.

25. Final Fantasy IX

I'm surprised to see that 14 out of my 25 made the list, given that my gaming focus these days is much more on 80s and 90s titles. I skipped over the past home console generation completely. I guess it just means my tastes align pretty well with TT!

Out of a large group, I would have expected it to stick closer to the others.
Twilight Princess is a very well made game, but in contrast to to Breath of the Wild, Wind Waker, Skyward Sword, and A Link Between Worlds it's a relatively generic albeit extremely well executed iteration of the Ocarina formula. I think it's pretty natural that when compiling a list with limited entries people would gravitate naturally to the games with a particularly standout element, instead of The Ocarina of Even More Zelda, Again.
