I don't remember any load times, but I also felt like the load times in FF4 on the ps1 were ok, and I almost convinced myself that the load times on Chrono Trigger for ps1 weren't that onerous as well (they were and I was deluding myself). So now I'm curious and feel like going back to see what the load times are like.

I'll give up and then return to Dark Souls 1, the best in the series.

I love Demon's Souls. Also? Demon's Souls' loading times? God awful. I have put the game down for the day before because I did not want to deal with another loading screen. The loading screens are an absolutely 100% objective flaw with the game. Especially considering decent merchants are only available in the field, so particularly varied shopping trips may see four or five loading screens.

Okay playing this for real this time. Got back through Phalanx and Armor Spider and beat Tower Knight. Going through Tower of Latria now and it is confusing AF.

As a Lovecraft fan I love the aesthetics. The mindflayers can eat shit tho.

So I beat Idol Master. Couldn't find the damn Archstone. Not sure if it was even there. Went through fog and back through. Idol Master was back and killed me. Idol Master Archstone was not there, so I'll have to go all the way back through 3-1 and beat the boss AGAIN with no healing items. Refresh me why this is a better game than Dark Souls because right now it seems buggy as fuck.

It isn't a bug, you have missed something in your exploration of the level.

The fact that you can get fucked over that easily though.

The real Demon's Souls starts here...

But seriously I think what they did for Fool's Idol is a neat little gimmick to give some substance to what is otherwise a strong contender for easiest boss in the game. If you want spoilers I will gladly share the trick though.

Just past the bridge with the arrow machine shooting down it, in the building on the right hand side of the path to the boss there is a door with a staircase. Up the staircase and all the way down the all it leads to there is a dregling who is glowing and praying. As long as that guy is alive Fool's Idol cannot be killed. There is also a key up there to unlock some more cells in the jail including the Sage who is your advanced magic salesman.

If you turned off the arrow machine it should be a pretty fast trip back.

Please tell me there is a clue in-game that this is necessary.

When you killed the idol the first time there should have been a voice speaking the prayer to revive it. Also you can see the guy you need to kill from the boss room if you look up I think. At the very least you would have seen him shiny and glowing from the other balcony from the stairs you had to pass on the left side of the chapel area (you find the silver catalyst here). The whole ability to leave the boss arena without getting THE DEMON WAS DESTROYED also lets you know you haven't won yet and lets you go kill the guy without necessarily having to replay the level again.

Yeah, for what it's worth, I noticed that on my own.

Demon's Souls is probably tied with Dark Souls for my second favourite in the series, behind Bloodborne. The bosses (The bosses especially are mint in this game) and stages, imo, are at their most inventive and experimental in this one. Non-stop crazy shit awaits you.

There's also a developer message in the boss arena that hints at what's going on.

No apparently it is Fool's Idol. So sorry.

I'll probably try again tomorrow, as I've got a short turnaround between shifts and I just started a game of Civ 3 that requires attention.

Every time I see this thread pop up, I hope it's because Demon's Souls had a PS4 remaster announced, or at least a PlayStation Now release. Every time, I end up disappointed.

Lousy PS3 exclusivity...*grumble* *grumble*

I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but it's exactly that kind of Wacky Bullshit that puts Demon's Souls at the top of the heap for me. Almost all of the bosses have a strong Idea behind them (even if some of them don't come off the best).

Very fond memories of this game, very sad my PS3 melted and I won't play it again anytime soon.

I marathoned this in a week in late 2012. Having not played Bloodborne, I think it's still my favorite of the Souls games. As much as I like Dark Souls, I always get bored of them and quit halfway through, then have to force feed myself these games months later. But I couldn't get enough of Demon's Souls. More atmosphere than the other games, more consistent level design, better pacing, faster movement than DS1 without turning into a pseudo-action game dodge-fest like DS3, and its worst level--proto-Blighttown--is saved until the end, technically. Good stuff.

No other diseased shanty-town level ever topped The Valley of Defilement 1+2 for me. The Fishing Hamlet gets close, but Blighttown has obvious shortcomings, and that one area in DS2 feels too much like a videogame level. It doesn't have details and specificity to make it feel lived in. It's just wooden boxes and bridges suspended in a dark void.

That the name hasn't been used for one of the Namco-Bandai published series entries... Makes sense because they only do so for like the Maerican region. It's still disappointing though

What's annoying about Fool's Idol is that I really hate that type of boss. Add to that the murky graphics making it hard to distinguish Idols from dreglings, and that the first fight drained a lot of my grass, and it's frustrating. So now I have to grind to by more Crescent Moon grass and it's really pissing me off. This was a cheap-ass gimmick.

I really do wish the boss was more fun to fight, too, because the aesthetics of the boss chamber are A+++.

I think one of the neat things about the Souls series, is that different character builds are viable. I had no trouble with Fool's Idol, but I had plenty of trouble with other bosses.

Also I played this game originally around the time Final Fantasy XIII came out. Are the servers and player messages still around? There were quite a few bosses where I received very helpful player messages.

All the online functions are intact, although the playerbase is as about as thin as you expect for an 8 year old game on an obsolete system.

All the more reason it should get a PS4 remaster or release on PS Now. Though I fear it being published by different companies in different regions* may be why we haven't seen either one.

* Sony Computer Entertainment** in Japan, Atlus in the US, Bandai Namco in Europe.

** Like Bloodborne, this is why we'll never get a proper PC version, i.e. "Not just an emulated console stream."

Probably going to do the first part of Shrine of Storms today. I am looking forward to it as what I've seen of the area so far is super cool.
