No, IIRC, Grant Morrison asked him first.

The character looks just like Desire in a coat. And debuts in a Suicide Squad book.

Oh, boy, some editor at DC is going to have a bad week.

Yeah, Morrison had the sense to ask Gaiman to sign off on that first (although I can't remember if Gaiman got a credit in the issue itself). Great story, too.

This one is surely whichever junior editor got assigned the miniseries approving something without, y'know, actually checking what he's allowed to do.

So is there a legal issue with the Sandman characters? I tried looking online for some details, but the best I could find was a FAQ on Neil Gaiman's blog saying DC owned the property.

I thought they had a deal with Gaiman similar to the one they have with James Robinson about Jack Knight. DC owns the character, but Robinson has some kind of right of refusal for new appearances. It must be in writing, because any sort of gentleman's agreement would have ended when Paul Levitz stepped down as publisher. Or when Jeannette Kahn left in 2002.

IIRC, DC owns the Endless, but Gaiman suuuuuuuuuuuuuure doesn't like it when someone uses a character he created without clearing it by him.

Something similar kept a bunch of the more interesting Spawn characters out of that series too, I believe.

Re-litigating Gaiman vs. McFarlane would last as long as the actual litigation did, I suspect.

It's eternal, as AFAIK McFarlane still keeps trying to end-run around the judgment (? settlement?) against him, and Gaiman has to sue every couple of years to pull him back in line.

You'd think Todd would've learnt from the Tony Twist case.

I love that this crazy idea doesn't seem to be stopping. At this rate it'll be like Bombshells and turn into a full-fledged comic.

Okay, two things.

First, I was not made aware that DC had started releasing collections of Batman Adventures and Superman Adventures.

Furthermore, while I was lead to understand that both books are good. I was not prepared to learn that, no, guys, seriously, they're really, really, really good. Like, f'srsly good.

This is like getting an extra few seasons of both series.

Grant Morrison is back writing for DC Comics.

Right now it appears to be just Wonder Woman Earth One Vol 2, Arkham Asylum 2 and Multiversity Too, but I really hope there's more.

I'm super skeptical at Arkham Asylum 2 ending up even remotely good...

Chris Burnham on art featuring a Damian Wayne Batman. I love Batman, Inc., so I'll read anything with the writer/artist combo of Morrison and Burnham.

I suppose Damian-Bat in a future Arkham would provide plenty of opportunities for wacky new Morrison villain ideas. I shall withhold judgment for now...

I wonder how Multiversity Too will handle the current nonsense going on with Dr. Manhattan, or if it'll just ignore it like I currently am.

This is Morrison, could go either way.

I"m worried with DC emphasizing sequels to old series instead of encouraging new stuff. But maybe this is Morrison himself deciding to play safe and play with familiar toys.

As long as we don't end with "Watchmen 2: Rorschach? I Hardly Know Him!"

I really gotta get my eyes on those books at some point. DCAU is the definitive DC for me.

I hope they get to late-era Gotham Adventures (the second series), which played around with the format quite a bit (they started to introduce background stories that carried on from issue to issue).

And, as a reminder: most of us here are semi-convinced that Grant Morrison ghostwrote the Superman Adventures stories that Mark Millar was credited for, because... c'mon, Millar ain't that good.

Also: they'd better get to Justice League Unlimited, because towards the end...

(the second one there was written by Giffen. To this day I don't understand why they didn't make the cover a swipe of the famous JLI team shot cover.)

The recent Batman (TAS) / TMNT (Nickelodeon) crossover miniseries was pretty good too.

One of the issues I read had, I believe, the only appearance of Carrie Kelly in the DCAU.

And she's drawn unusually sexily because Bruce Timm.

Wow, looking back at JLU (when Adam Beechen was writing it during the early days of the book) it wasn't NEARLY as insane as it became towards the end when the show had gone off the air.

(And some stories screw up continuity; there's a Darkseid / Orion story early on that just doesn't work with what happened later, for instance.)

I was going to clamor for more Detective Chimp, because however much Detective Chimp we get could never be enough, but where the fuck is the Elongated Man? It's been more than a decade since Identity Crisis and 52, plus at least 1.5 reboots, why can't we have some Dibny's? I know Simone snuck them in to her somewhat disappointing 2nd go on Secret Six, but that barely counts.
