I don't wanna derail Chrono talk, but since I'll be out of the house all evening what the hell here's my list, complete with waaay too many selected tracks. I had to finish this off in haste, so a lot would change if I had more time to spend on it, especially the track selections...

Quote:
*01. Chrono Cross (Chronomantic / Ancient Dragon Stronghold / Life ~ Faraway Promise)
*02. Legend of Mana (Title Theme / Song of Mana / Hometown Domina / Wind Sings of a Journey)
*03. Katamari Damacy (Katamari on the Rock / Getsu to Oji)
*04. Final Fantasy VI (Ending / Theme of Locke)
*05. Chrono Trigger (Chrono Trigger / Corridors of Time / Forest / Magus / Schala / Frog)
*06. Final Fantasy XII (Dalmasca Eastersand / To The Place of the Gods / Prelude / Clash otBBridge)
07. Bravely Default (Serpent Eating the Ground / That Person's Name Is / Land of Light and Shadow)
08. The World Ends With You (Twister / Calling / Someday)
*09. Okami (Ryoushima Plains II / Reset)
*10. Secret of Mana (Opening / Color of the Summer Sky)
11. Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds (Lorule Overworld 1 / Lorule Castle 4)
12. Suikoden III (Transcending Love (opening) / The Wind and the Earth)
*13. Shadow of the Colossus (Revived Power / The Farthest Land)
*14. Actraiser (Filmore / Opening)
15. Star Control II (Hyperspace / Melnorme / Orz)
*16. Super Metroid (Brinstar)
17. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Shissou / Clash on the Big Bridge Oriental Vers)
*18. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Vampire Killer)
*19. Final Fantasy Tactics (Antipyretic / Trisection / Prologue Movie)
20. Valkyria Chronicles (Main Theme)
*21. Earthbound / Mother 2 (Ending)
22. Wild Arms (Intro Animation / Ending)
23. Rez (Fear / Buggie Running Beeps)
24. Space Channel 5 (Main theme)
*25. Gitaroo Man (Soft Machine / Flyin to Your Heart)
Thoughts on stuff we haven't already talked about:

I really love REVO's work on Bravely Default. Lots of super bombastic and over-the-top orchestral rock, but if anyone can make that work he's the one. And the (real) final battle music brings all the games leitmotifs together in a triumphal surge that rivals others we've talked about like Okami.

TWEWY's soundtrack I guess has been a little overshadowed by Persona at this point, but was one of the first RPGs to really work a modern pop/punk soundtrack. And since of course the game is vcompletely centered around of-the-moment city culture, it fits to a T.

I had Link Between Worlds as my Zelda pick because I adore every remix it has of the fantastic tunes from LTTP. And then there's Lorule Castle which brilliantly takes a literally inverted rendition of Hyrule Castle's theme and spins it into magic.

SuikoIII we already talked about. That intro is killer.

I'm wondering if anyone else voted for StarCon2. It's OST isn't the work of any one composer but rather a mix of submitted MIDI compositions (or rather, Tracker files, man that was a fun scene), some of which got shuffled around from their intended context. But man they're just a lot of fun, and got some real cool stuff out of old hardware.

Admittedly FFXIII-2 is a left-field choice that I picked partly to inject some iconoclasm into my FF selections, but man, acid jazz in my Final Fantasy? Hell yes it works. There's other good stuff in there too, plus it gives Hamauzu a look in.

Valkyria is just another great orchestral Sakimoto score I fell in love with.

Wild Arms is a hair's breadth (if that) from straight-up plagiarizing Ennio Morricone's spaghetti western works, but that sure made it memorable. And it's another one with a holy-shit revelation of an intro sequence.

Was a little surprised Rez didn't sneak onto the bottom of the list. It's a short soundtrack, but mind-blowing in context.

Less surprised about Space Channel 5, but I had to sneak it on my list because it's thanks to it that Mexican Flyer makes me smile to this day.

Also a few things in my notes that didn't quite make my submitted list for one reason or another and that we haven't talked about much already:
Seiken Densestsu III, FF Mystic Quest, Suikoden V, Super Mario RPG, Vib Ribbon, Blaster Master, Smash Bros (Brawl/Melee), Soul Calibur II, Little Big Planet

I think your tastes are very dissimilar to TT overall, Rya, but that doesn't mean you don't belong here. Madhair has terrible taste in games* but we keep him around.

It's all well and good, popularity contest and whatnot, but the complete lack of Street Fighter representation is borderline appalling. You're actually reading this from a void between realities because I flipped so many tables with such velocity and power that time and space were devoured. Sorry guys! At least we have each other!

Like FF6, what could I possibly say about CT's OST that hasn't already been said? Pure magic. I don't know if I can find a weak track.

I totally forgot to vote for Street Fighter 2. Oops!

Yeah, Chrono Trigger! I don't know if it is my favorite game because of its soundtrack or if it is my favorite videogame soundtrack because of the amazing game, a perfect combination of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy (without party chat sadly). I'll never know! But it is by far the game soundtrack that makes my heart beat more.

My list:

1. Chrono Trigger (Corridors of Time).
2. Ico (Heal).
3. Suikoden (Theme of a Moonlit Night).
4. Shadow Of The Colossus (Resurrection).
5. Ys I & II Chronicles (Palace of Destruction).
6. Castlevania: Rondo Of Blood (Mary Samba... no wait, Den).
7. Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn (Eternal Bond).
8. Gitaroo Man (The Legendary Hero).
9. Breath Of Fire V (Electricity Supply Building).
10. Final Fantasy X (A fleeting dream).
11. The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Snowpeak Ruins).
12. Grim Fandango (Neon Ledge).
13. Diablo II (Tristam).
14. Shadow Hearts Covenant (Old Smudged Map).
15. Vagrant Story (Graylands Incident Climax).
16. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Pursuit ~ Cornered).
17. Silent Hill II (Theme of Laura).
18. Metroid Prime (Phendrana Drifts).
19. Cave Story (Main Theme).
20. Danganronpa 2 (Ekoroshia).
21. Metal Gear Solid (Blast Furnace).
22. Shin Megami Tensei: Digital Devil Saga (Spider's String the Second Movement).
23. Breath Of Fire III (Cedar Woods).
24. Terranigma (Underworld).
25. World of Goo (Cog in the machine).

Since the full list of nom noms is coming anyway, I'll wait till then to talk about mne that didn't make it.

But in the meantime --if you like even one track in FFVI and/or FFIV, for the love of Golbez queue up the Lost Odyssey OST in your player of choice.

Out of the ones that didn't, I expected my PC game nominations to be futile, but am surprised by the omissions of Valkyria Chronicles and especially Etrian Odyssey.

Also slightly surprised that no licensed soundtracks at all made it. Both of the ones I picked (Brutal Legend and GTA Vice City) were simultaneously great collections of songs and crucial for setting the mood and atmosphere of their respective games.

This was fun to read and follow along! Thanks for running it, Ponchobhanic!

I'll go ahead and share my list now. Maybe some commentary tomorrow if I have some more time.

Bold means it didn't make the cut.

1. Chrono Trigger (SNES) "To Far Away Times"
2. Final Fantasy 4 (SNES) "Another Moon"
3. Super Castlevania 4 (SNES) "Torture Chamber (Stage 8-1)"
4. Final Fantasy 6 (SNES) "Setzer's Theme"
5. Mega Man 2 (NES) "Dr. Wily Stage 1"
6. Earthbound (SNES) "Onett Theme"
7. Soul Blazer (SNES) "Southera"
8. Mega Man X (SNES) "Casting Theme" aka, Staff Roll
9. Chrono Cross (PSX) "Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World"
10. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PSX) "Tower of Mist"
11. Street Fighter 2 Turbo (SNES) "Ken's Theme"
12. Secret of Mana (SNES) "Eternal Recurrence"
13. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest (SNES) "Battle 2"
14. Mega Man 3 (NES) "Wily Fortress Stage 2"
15. Prey (2017) (Multi-plat) "Into The Tunnels"
16. Axiom Verge (Multi-plat) "Rusalka"
17. Ninja Gaiden 2 (NES) "Ending Part 2"

18. Final Fantasy 7 (PSX) "J-E-N-O-V-A"
19. Bioshock (Multi-plat) "Welcome To Rapture"
20. The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (SNES) "Lost Woods"
21. Bravely Default (3DS) "Wicked Flight"
22. Castlevania 2 (NES) "Within These Castle Walls"
23. World of Warcraft (PC) "Lament of the Highborne"
24. Mega Man 5 (NES) "Ending Theme"
25. Sonic The Hedgehog (Genesis) "Green Hill Zone"

The ending list was pretty much what I expected, and seeing roughly half of the games I selected is about what I figured.

A little bummed that none of the "Blazer Trilogy" games made it but I suppose I'll take Actraiser as a kind of proto-Blazer game; for my money, Soul Blazer has one of the best OSTs on the SNES, which is why I put it at #7.

Again, the lack of Street Fighter 2 is mind-boggling. For better or worse, I keep trying to think of some rational reason why it didn't even get a runner-up spot. Street Fighter 2 ranks up there with Mario and Final Fantasy in terms of its historical importance to me and the OST is huge part of that.

I've learned with these lists to adopt the attitude of "I hope my noms make it but I'm really just gonna enjoy the ride". I mean hell, my #1 didn't make the cut in my own thread.

Street Fighter 2 is one of those soundtracks that I always mean to give a proper listening to, but I usually end up picking one of the SNES versions which sound like their coming out of a tin can or the lifeless Genesis version. Then I remember that the definitive version is supposed to be either from the arcade original from some classic Japanese PC, but by that point I've already forgotten what I'm doing and am already listening to something else instead.

Basically, I'm lazy.

Strangely, in both the best game and best OST lists, UnderTale always matches with my impression. I mean there must be some people that like that music genre!
(Also was mainly expecting a lot more SaGa games to show up here since I thought this community was an Akitoshi Kawazu fan community, but I guess that slowly died away.)

I was actually considering voting FFXIII-2 as well. I'd at least put it on the same level as Nier Automata. In the end I decided to vote for FFVI instead, though, as I remember pretty much every single track of FFVI, but can't even recall a single one of FFXIII-2 (I only remember some of the songs having nice singing).
I also put FFVIII as my second favorite, because in my list I favoured OSTs I like of games I don't like (I wanted to counter my personal bias to make the list as objective as possible).

I wondered if anyone would put an Ar tonelico game on their list. Had I not procrastinated, and actually made a list, AT2 probably would've made it fairly high on mine.

(that said i do like EXEC_COSMOFLIPS/. a lot, really the only reason i wouldn't have voted AT3 is that i've never played it)

I can actually sing the EXEC_COSMOFLIPS/. song really well without having to read the text because I memorized it.

It was funny, at work I put the lyrics in my skype message and then everybody at work asked me what language that was and then I explained it and sung that song. So now everybody there knows about Hymmnos.

If we were talking about the best game of the series, I'd have trouble deciding between 2 and 3, but since we are talking about OST 3 just takes the cake. It's just so good.

My second favorite track is EXEC_Z/. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1p18O6ac1c

The thing with most of these lists - particularly when it comes down to art - is that each and every one of our tastes are unique. What is a masterpiece of music for you might be nothing but white noise to you, and, well, that's fine. That's art, is yours, you decide what you like.

But that means these lists are going to turn out "safe", as the final list matches the collective tastes of all Talking Time, so popularity will best your personal taste every time. That's the nature of democracy, I'm afraid.

It also means that there's no such thing as an "ojective" list. I try to make a point that 'Top' doesn't mean Best, but Favorite. Because, frankly, what metric can we use to judge what's 'Best'?

That said, I don't mind that popularity trumps 'quality', whatever that word can mean in the subject of art. I knew the final list wouldn't match mine (Undertale over Chrono Cross, heretiics? No Necrodancer? No Life Is Strange? Madness!) but it's OK, it's fun ^_^ And did get to know some new soundtracks. I hope you guys had some fun, too, since that's our main objective here.

... I really should bump up the Suikodens in my backlog.

Well, honestly, the problem with these lists is that no vote can mean anything from "I hate this OST" to "I'd put this on #1, but I never heard of it before!"
So it's a pretty uninformed democracy that favours popularity over quality.

Of course the only way to fix this would be to just name one thing and then everybody rates that. And then move to the next. So people actually know each object to vote for and give it a honest chance. And then at the end sort everything by average rating. That would remove the popularity influence.

Which is exactly what the TT Thunderdomes do.

I looked into and added nominations.
It's not exactly the same as the nominations are limited, though. I mean I would like to nominate pretty much all the Touhou tracks until 1999 going by the requirements and I'm not sure which would be most popular among the others, so that already influences the result.
Also isn't it more like a tournament rather that overall rating?

First draft of my list had chono trigger at like 20something. then I took it off. Part of it is probably just that it was inevitable top 3 or so, part of it is that idk, it feels less personal maybe?

But it's still really really good, and talks of "boring obvious choice" or "nostalgia above all" ignored, it's truly impressive. It has an unbelievable grasp of it's own atmosphere; like every single character theme becomes a defining trait, and every memory I have of world travel starts with the theme looping before I can even picture the map. Part of liking the game is it was one of the first rpgs I've ever played, but it's mostly that it's a game that seems so heavily driven by it's music.
but also... the drums

also, I'm not trying to start an argument, but I'm pretty sure these lists are going to be defined by popularity for like, 100 obvious reasons. I'm sure lots of people voted for games they didn't like but loved the soundtrack, but also far more people played and loved chrono trigger and ffvi and all else. It's hard to beat exposure when you're considering a number of votes, and it's hard to counter a legend when you're concerned about positive reaction. But that's ok because it's really not a big deal if the top 5 or whatever is more or less a forgone conclusion, it's about the friends you make along the way

FF6 was on my list. Though I didn't grow up with it, I really enjoyed the music and there are some really fantastic songs on that track that are some of the best examples of the SNES sounds.

that being said, CT has just a host of incredible music. Frog's Theme is one of my favorites. I like the whistle type sound and it feels really heroic. Frog is also one of my favorite characters. Chrono Trigger is great for the opening, but I'm not as big of a fan of it on its own. Schala's Theme is another favorite. And I like pretty much all of the battle music.

I ran out of time and didn't get my list in in time, but I had several matches. Here's what didn't show up that I would have voted for:

Halo (or halo 2 I really liked the halo music. I would have picked the Halo theme. I hear that music and I want to go storm a beach.

Crypt of the Necrodancer I couldn't pick a favorite song. I suck at the game, but I love the soundtrack and listen to it at work whenever I need a pick up.

Final Fantaxy X "To Zanarkand" is my favorite. it gives me shivers. I also noted the battle theme, spira unplugged, and movement in green as songs i enjoyed listening to.

Legend of Zelda: Link Between Worlds "Lowrule Castle". I don't have the nostalgia for LttP, so LbW was sort of my ability to fall in love with both games.

TMNT 4: Turtles in Time "Sewer Surfin" is my obvious favorite. Its a rockin track to a great fun level. There's a lot of great songs that go great to beating up footclan through time.

anyway here's my list with the games that didn't show up on the list bolded and their songs linked (not many of you are probably gonna be able to hear that dolucky one because of copyright lol)
Code:
1. Drakengard "Ending C"
2. Opoona "Blue Desert Hotel"
3. Secret of Mana "The Oracle"
4. Final Fantasy XII "Phon Coast"
5. Jet Set Radio Future "Sweet Soul Brother"
6. Earthbound "The Sky Walker"
7. DoDonPachi: Daifukkatsu Black Label "Zatsuza"
8. Streets of Rage 2 "Never Return Alive"
9. Tail of the Sun "Odottepon!"
10. Killer 7 "Sweet Blue Flag"
11. Battle Garegga "Underwater Rampart"
12. Flower, Sun, Rain "Children's Corner"
13. SMT III: Nocturne "Talk"
14. FFV "Decisive Battle"
15. Devil Crash "Bonus Stage 2, 5"
16. The Path "Forest Interlude 2"
17. Nier: Automata "Fortress of Lies"
18. Silent Hill: Shattered Memories "Angel's Scream"
19. Ken Griffey's Winnin Run "Game Lost"
20. FFIX "Final Battle"
21. God Hand "Broncobuster"
22. Zombies Ate My Neighbors "No Assembly Required"
23. No More Heroes "Stop Hanging DJs"
24. Xenogears "Shevat"
25. Dolucky Sandlot Baseball "Love de Peace"
oh that's a lot... I'm gonna spoiler-pop me talking about those that missed. its like one sentence each but it's still too much space

Drakengard - I already talked about, but I want to reiterate that I'm disappointed in you all and I hope you make better choices next time.

Opoona - I alluded to this by saying we should respect Basiscape. This is Sakimoto, Namiki, Iwata, and others legitimately at the top of their game. Anyway, Opoona is the most unfortunate victim of "hidden Wii gems" and I hope Koei pays artepiazza to make another (hey, he was in warrior all stars).

JSRF - Really thought this one would be on the list. Obviously just great sampling.

DDP: DFK - Figured this would miss but let me say how sad it is for me that this list didn't have any shmups. I probably should have included more in my list to be honest. I was reminded just yesterday that I should have included Einhander.

Tail of the Sun - There's so much I'd love to say about this game and soundtrack. It's funky it both the bad and good meanings. The only reason this wasn't higher for me I think, is that the ost includes arrangements which are even better than the on-disc tracks, but it feels like cheating to consider those part of it idk.

Killer7 - Takada is on my list 4 times I think. Such good atmosphere on this.
Battle Garegga - You have to admit, it is one of the best Underground Resistance tracks.

Flower, Sun, Rain - oh hey it's Takada again (and some other guy that isn't Jun Fukuda??) Lot of fun arrangements of classical music for a game that is not fun but is definitely arranged.

SMTIII - I want to make everyone fight by talking about how this is how SMT music should sound and I included no persona games. But instead let me say I forgot Strange Journey on my list and I'm sorry

FFV - Disappointed in you all. Please listen to the drums.

Devil's Crush - Important to note this is the PC Engine version, though this and the mega drive are basically chippy versions of awful neoclassical metal and it rules. Although the track I selected is actually one of the more calm and somehow emotive tracks. This also has fantastic arrangements (and I think one person on the arranged album also worked on the tail of the sun one. exciting).

The Path - It's Jarboe... From Swans. Rya don't think this is a malicious jab but I do want to say that you would not like this soundtrack. Just a warning.

Silent Hill - I'm really shocked Silent Hill 2 didn't make it. I probably should have included it in my list. I have way more experience with this soundtrack though. And listen to that scream sample. So good

Ken Griffey's Winning Run - This is a 12 minute soundtrack. It has 9 tracks, two of which are national anthems, one is take me out to the ballgame, one is a ten second jingle. The others are really great grungy techno tracks composed by DKC(3) composer Eveline Novakovic. She's so great! This is better than DKC!

God Hand - More Takada, this time with surf rock. I think that's Fukuda on guitar. idk. great soundtrack great game etc

Zombies Ate My Neighbors - I love this soundtrack way less than I used to. It's fun though.

No More Heroes - Takada. You probably know this soundtrack at least to some end.

Dolucky - I randomly found this on someone's slsk account. Have barely even seen the game in action. It's a gimmick choice but hey it's really good. You'll probably have to take my word for it because it's not the easiest to find (or maybe it is I haven't looked that hard)

This was a lot of fun. I'm still going through a lot of these OSTs, many of which I've not heard before. Thanks so much for Conchobar and Positronic Brain from a phenomenal list.

1. The Legend of Zelda: The Orcarina of Time
2. Super Mario Bros. 3 Just jaunty and fun.
Overworld 2 Theme
3. Super Mario Bros.
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Super Mario Bros. 2 - I love the ragtime tone of the this soundtrack. Though I wish it was a little less repetitive. Overworld Theme
6. The Legend of Zelda - Man, that original theme feels so adventurous and exciting even within the limits of 8-bit
7. Super Smash Bros. Melee - Boring pick, I know. Mostly just new arrangements of classic themes. But they are all really good. Opening Theme
8. Megaman 2
9. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World: The Game Really great chiptunes by Anamanaguchi in this one. Another Winter
10. Megaman 3
11. Umjammer Lammy - Aw, no love for a game that's also a musical. Well, it is pretty short, but still, it has some fun songs. Keep Your Head Up!
12. Parappa the Rapper - See above. Lammy only slightly edged out Parappa. Mouselini's Rap
13. Red Dead Redemption - I love Ennio Morricone, so a game that uses his style is way up my alley. Horseplay
14. Chrono Trigger
15. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - I know, it is mostly for the aggregated licenced music, but a good aggregation makes for a lot.
16. Shadow of the Colossus
17. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
18. Super Mario World Title Theme
19. Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2 - More aggregated music, this time a collection of j-pop songs in the charts. Still a lot of fun.
20. Street Fighter 2
21. Megaman IV (I owned it, so it still means a lot to me.
22. Double Dragon Neon
23. Risk of Rain
24. Pokemon Red/Blue
25. Tetris

Oh I should have included parappa.

Also.... GTA IV has the best gta soundtrack because of 1. dj premier radio and 2. terry riley and 3. jazz radio

well but it makes sense to say vice city is better because it maintains an atmosphere while gta iv in every aspect of the game is completely lifeless so having a better colleciton of music isn't actually that useful.
