It is.

But as a counterpoint to the recent thread: a *lot* of group spaces where people come together in a non-everyday environment, not just anime cons, have sadly needed those signs forever, and I think it's actually evidence of things moving in the right direction that most of them are actually taking the problem seriously these days.

I understand some conventions will have people just giving out deodorant.

I'm comfortably certain that Anime Central has a policy whereby they will temporarily eject you from the convention until you've bathed if they receive complaints about your (lack of) hygiene.

They also seem to have no problem banning people for being awful creeps, also.

I wish there weren't quite so many man-children and awful people in my hobby.

I wonder about young people--young men in particular--who, out from under the oppressive parental thumb for a long weekend, choose "refusing to bathe" as their rebel yell.

They're probably not bathing at home either. TOO MANY QUALITY JAPANIMATIONS TO WATCH

Well, you can get a portable DVD player or any number of smaller streaming devices to watch from in the bathtub.

Cleaning time doesn't necessarily mean you have to put away your top-quality Japanimations!

I wish these people would bathe properly outside of conventions, but, well, check out your comic book depositories.

Almost every comic shop I know is cramped, overstuffed, and, often, in a basement. Old carpeting and tiny (if any) windows don't help the smell any. Visiting the Mile High Comics in LA was an amazing experience, it was so bright and wide open and had proper ventilation.

The two most successful comics shops in this burg had the same strategy: Rent clean, well-maintained space in the nicest cheap strip malls in town.

Literally every other shop crammed decades of moldering DC back issues into Silent Hill: The Room.

The Beguiling would probably still be wedged in that narrow, ancient house behind Honest Ed's if the whole block hadn't been bought up by developers.

I am suddenly very happy that the worst game store I've dealt with is a modified warehouse behind a carpet wholesaler.

(The weirdest is still the one that was run out of a laundromat, but that was more a comic shop with CCG rack anyway.)

I don't think I've ever been to an overtly unfriendly or creepy comics or tabletop game store. Though, as also happens at video game stores, I've been ignored, or treated like I didn't know what I was doing there, or it was assumed that I was there to buy a gift for someone else.

Live bait shop? Like the ones that sell mealworms and little creepy crawlies like that?

If you are ever in Orlando, give me a call and I'll take you to A COMIC SHOP, which is both a pleasant place to walk around in, and contains a bar and concert venue in the back.

We used to have a nice, bright, friendly comic shop nearby with lots of well-curated collections and indies and stuff for all ages, but it closed. :/
