I disagree, it's one of my favorite DS games.

I think 4HoL's just-pick-an-attack mechanic is super cool. I remember returning to Etrian Odyssey after finishing it and thinking EO was stuck. Silly me; it was just asking which enemy to hit.

I think it's a very pretty game. A lot of the music is surprising melancholy.

I felt like I had to grind quite a bit to beat the last boss, but maybe I just had a bad build/strategy. I dunno, it was almost seven years ago. I ended up grinding tons of gold via the shop mini-game and then using gil toss because by that point I just wanted to beat the stupid game.

But up until that point I really enjoyed it and still have fond memories despite those last few hours.

Different strokes. I found it much more entertaining than Bravely Default.

4HoL likes to kick it old-school (auto-select attacks, story-gated class progression, very limited inventory) but if you can get over that, it's basically a prototype for Bravely Default.

On the other hand, if that comparison means nothing to you, you'd be better off skipping right over 4HoL and going directly to Bravely Default.

I should play Revenant Wings again. It's very pretty. Is there an easy mode?

4HoL is possibly the most divisive Final Fantasy game.

And considering how dang divided people are about any given entry in the franchise, that is saying quite a bit.

4 Heroes of Light is janky. I love it as much for its jank as for its smooth parts, but it does make it hard to revisit. "Grindy" isn't the right word for it, but the unfortunate level scaling makes it so that the more you do grind, the more you need to grind.

There's actually no connection, aside from the lead artist and a couple cameos, between it and Bravely Default. I was surprised to learn that too! I call it a case of convergent evolution. They may both have job systems, gameplay based on manipulating the action economy, time loops, ugly dungeons, and overtones of being retro throwbacks, but they came to those similar outcomes from different directions.

Bravely Default is certainly the better game, but neither one of them can really substitute for the other.

It still sounds like 4HoL came off better than most of the Crystal Chronicles games, anyway.

Oh yeah, Ever Oasis is finally going to come out next month! However, kind of sucks for Etrian Odyssey fans, as now that acronym is going to be more confusing.

Does Echoes of Valentia have the obnoxious breeding mechanic? Because if not I am in!

Crystal Chronicles exists to be what you liked about the Mana games, but implemented a little more clunkily?

There have been several successors to a lot of the mechanics and game feel found in SoM, but none that I've played have hit that sweet spot where aggressive grinding can overcome lack of skill at the game or at teamwork quite as well as Crystal Chronicles. This goes for the Echoes of Time, but the netplay and local multiplayer is kinda bad. These problems might be improved by letting a Wii host the game, but then you're back in GameCube crystal chronicles territory.
