Default Nintendo 3DS

This PDF just appeared on Nintendo's website for a new portable game system. It will be backwards compatible with the DS but will be capable of displaying 3d images without special glasses.

Speculation time commence!

I really hope "backwards compatible" means "backwards compatible and also region-free."

I want to be able to replace my DS Light sometime when this comes out, and that can't happen if it doesn't play imported DS games.

Unless "L/R buttons that don't fuck up after a couple months" is a new feature I'm not gonna get too excited about this just yet.

Original DS games are still region-free on the DSi, they simply aren't region-coded. Even when 3DS games will likely be region-locked, there's no reason to believe that original DS games would be.

Do you have a DSi? Or are you referring to the DS Lite? I've had my DSi in plentiful use for half a year now, and there have been no problems with the L/R buttons. The build quality is all around better than the DS Lite.

Oh, they are? I thought original DS games weren't region free on the DSi for some reason.

Then I guess I'll just hope that the 3DS games will be region free now.

Try denying THAT, Nintendo of America!

I'm wondering how these supposed 3D graphics will work. Frankly, I'm not that interested in an illusion of depth and don't think it will add much to the experience. Furthermore, there are gamers out there who won't benefit from it much, if at all. I have a friend with a lazy eye and another who's legally blind, and neither will be able to fully appreciate the 3D effects of this system. Hopefully the effects won't be such an integral part of the experience that the games will be impossible to play without 20/20 vision.

I don't want to second guess Nintendo but this 3D display stuff is so incredibly meh right now. It's getting ready to be the next blu-ray if not the next Divx.

Now that Nintendo has gone down the path of region-locked handheld games with the DSi, it's a reasonable assumption that 3DS games will be region-locked as well.

However, they would have to go through some incredible loops to implement region-coding and locking for original DS games.

Unless my assumption is wrong, this is how it would go:

DS games: regionfree on DS, DSi and 3DS
DSi enhanced games: region-locked on DSi and 3DS, regionfree on DS
DSi games: region-locked on DSi and 3DS
(highly speculative "3DS enhanced" games: region-locked on DSi, regionfree on DS if compatible)
3DS games: region-locked on 3DS

I think potentially it could add a great deal to a game's immersion with 3d, particularly if they use the camera for head tracking. I'm very interested in this.

Well, deaf people aren't a reason not to include speakers.

A 3D screen could be a bit of a pain to deal with, though. With currently existing (affordable) technology, you'll probably have to hold the 3DS just so to view it properly. Oh well, it'll still be better than the Virtual Boy.

I was looking to pick up an XL next week to replace my aging (and dying) DS Phat. Christ. Now what?

I just hope this doesn't go towards marking the end of portable 2D gaming as we know it.

Then again, Super Mario 64 DS was the launch title for the DS, and it's been home to more 2D gameplay than 3D, as far as I know. And 2D is making a sort of comeback on consoles, so I guess there's hope.

Here is the probable outcome. After the initial zomg-factor subsides, this 3D aspect seems extraneous. I am unsure how it will enhance games beyond cosmetics. But I am willing to defer to the talents of game designers, who will show me how ignorant I am and how this is this missing piece.

In 2 years, Sony will announce that all their movie studios are now using 3D filming technology. I wonder what the PSP 2 will incorporate?

Now that is actually kind of cool. Regular 3D (like in the theaters) is usually just dumb "pop" effects and headaches from crappy 3D glasses. And double ticket prices to justify it.

Ditto. I was freaking out, because man I'm sick of the 3D fad. If the speculation is correct, however, I'm intrigued. I would much rather have my 3DS be a window into a little 3D world, as opposed to having random crap pop out at me.

I was suppressing the urge to link to that game and snarkily point out that the DS can do 3D already, so the suggestion that an entire new console generation will work that way doesn't impress me much.

This is sort of why I waited so long to get a DSi. Every handheld Nintendo releases is obsolete within one year.

The existing DSi can do 3D, yes. I believe the reason an entirely new system is necessary is because 3D necessitates a higher resolution than the DSi. While DS video is sufficient for the existing games, we can't have clunky 3D with almost-good-enough graphics. It would diminish the impact of the illusion. So our question for now is... what can do they do with a sub-$200 price target? Near-GameCube quality?

So much like computers, you'll just never commit to buying one?

I wasn't really holding off on a DSi for any reason beyond the obvious - price and waiting for compelling software. But it worked out for me since this will likely be a better choice.

I was wondering how Nintendo would do it without polarized screens, which are inaccurate, expensive, and only viewable from certain angles. That's kind of a cool trick.

That said I am absolutely not interested in 3D games on a handheld. Well, okay - maybe a Wizardry-alike with some depth to it would be kinda cool.

Even so, I'm glad that I got my DSi when I did. It's a huge improvement over my old Phat, and there are a bunch of really fun DSi games out there.

Nintendo will really have to sell me on this new gadget, since there are enough excellent DS games out there to last me a long time.

How is a camera going to track movement if I'm playing in the dark?

It won't need to on the 3DS because that's the real reason they put accelerometers in the thing, not for some half-assed Wii emulation.

I'm not sure I understand this yet. So it's not optical 3D with glasses? It's some sort of effect where you can shift the system and get a sort of shadow box effect from the image on the screen? I'll need to see more of this to make any sort of sense of it.

The 3D thing just won't ever exceed a "kinda cool" trick for me, so... I'm hoping they don't bet everything on that. Then again, I was a late convert to touchscreens too, so maybe there's some crazy gameplay innovation that'll surprise me.
