First volume of Bokurano is out. I stopped following it on SigIkki because the pacing of the chapters just beg to be read in tankoban format not in monthly installments. I'm also rather peeved that the SigIkki site hasn't updated since last year and the last news post was over a month ago announcing they're on hiatus.

IIchan has translated another chapter of Otoyomegatari.

So pretty.

Why is Mori's art so pretty?

Seriously, this is one of the most gorgeous comics I've ever read.

I'm listening to old episodes of GFW radio, and Shawn Elliot just randomly brought up 2001 Nights, which makes me very happy, as it's one of my favorite manga (certainly my favorite space manga; better even than Planetes), and I wasn't aware that anyone else knew about it.

Man, I've been meaning to try reading that for years now. Maybe I'll order the first book this week.

While I'm at it, I should see if there are any Galaxy Express 999 scanlations out there.

Bolded for emphasis. Every time a new chapter is out I tend to re-read the whole thing.

So has anyone else heard about Gene Simmons' kid flagrantly plagiarizing a bunch of manga, particularly Bleach? It is pretty bewildering.

That's not the best part:

To be honest, I'm more bothered by the fact that Gene Simmon's son is a comic artist than whether or not it's a rip-off...

As swipes go those are pretty inoffensive. At least he changed the detail in the characters.

To be honest, by the end of the full page's list (and apparently there're more for different series), it was pretty crazy.

Greg Land's career is proof that there's nothing wrong with being a crummy tracer as long as you make dat money (and as long as no one takes viable legal action against you)

More like proof that tracing is frowned upon unless it results in porn stars wearing superhero costumes.

The plagiarism in Incarnate is kind of ridiculous though. It's not just Bleach either; people have found examples from Deadman Wonderland, Hellsing, One Piece and other stuff. It's so bad that the book has been suspended by the publisher. I'm not an artist so I don't know the ethics behind tracing, but it seems silly to me that someone would steal so liberally from other people's work, especially work that's well known even in the U.S. Just create your own characters! They may be completely unoriginal, but at least they're not traces.

And of course, the most hilarious part of this whole thing is the field day the internet has been having with it. My favorite is how two of the boards on 4chan were renamed to commemorate the event. "Anime & Manga" became "Detergents & Magma" (based on something Simmons supposedly said), and "Comics" became "Plagiarism." Apparently they're back to normal as of today, but that lasted for a while. They had about a million threads about the comic too.

Whoa whoa hey wait a minute. Here's a bunch of overlays of one character.

Note that his character is ALWAYS traced from Ken (or whatever his name was. I haven't seen Bleach in forever).
In other words, he's not just riffing character designs or using poses. It's the same characters in the same poses, usually in the same layout. He is tracing something else and passing it off as his own. That's pretty bad.

This one is something from deviant art. (Left is Incarnate, right is DA.)

This one is Bleach fanart.

Know what's really sad? Those appear to be the most well-drawn pieces in the comic. The rest of the scans I've seen look like some Bleach knock-off webcomic.

Also that they're all inferior to the pictures he's tracing. Pretty impressive!

Yeah, "inspired by" is one thing, straight-up tracing is another, and generally just Not Cool despite the fact that a few well-known figures have managed to get away with it.

Wha? I see people getting worked up about Greg Land's work all the time. Possibly more than any other comic artist (outside of Rob Liefeld).

Jeez. If we were talking "similar poses and character designs", he could get away with that statement, but dude. Shit is obviously traced. Who's got the clue-by-four? It seems to be direly needed.

I'm with Tite Kubo on this - Gene Simmons's son is a comic artist? Crazy!

In other manga news, if volume 7 of Pluto was the end, like it seems it is, that was one intensely unsatisfying ending, and 20th Century Boys needs to get on with it. I still love you though, Urasawa.

So I guess it's no coincidence that the DeviantArt pictures and fanart he stole are far more artistic and of a higher quality than his tracings?

Does anyone know of a good place to download scans of Japanese manga? I know where to find scanslations, but I'm looking for just the raws. (Don't worry I own the manga in question -- hell, I even own it in Japanese! I just want something I can write on.)
