Default Fire Emblem: Echoes - details are emerging from the shadows (of Valentia)

Gameplay videos and details about this game are beginning to appear. Thoughts and other info?

From the videos:
-Characters have voices when you select them with your cursor, like RTS games.

-Were archers able to shoot that far in the last two 3DS games? There is a sniper with an iron bow that has a range of 5. (He also has an ability with +2 bow range, so the bows have range 3 by default it seems.) Perhaps someone has played the original and can compare.

-They show a 'dungeon' level inside a tomb, where you navigate like a fully 3d, 3rd person game. When you reach a random encounter (by coming into contact with an onscreen enemy), you cut away to mini SRPG battle. I think it is kinda weird how you control ten characters (!!) in these mini-battles. Both battles I saw were 10v5, and the 5 enemies are identical weak mooks that don't pose any threat.

From the details:
Quote:
Systems

– Choose between “Normal” and “Hard” when first starting
– Can also choose battle rules between “Classic” that has perma-deaths after battles and “Casual” that allows any fallen characters to revive once back on the map
– Royal Treasure “Mila’s Gear”: special item for battles to rewind the movement of a unit
– Mila’s Gear has limited uses

– Since there is no weapon affinity in the game, topography effects are crucial
– Ex: if you try to hit a character in a forest, accuracy lowered by 40%
– Magic ignores topography
– Magic uses HP
Interesting addition. I wonder if this will be like a game-ified save state (for 1 character's action), or if it doesn't undo combat like that.

This is all stuff that was in the original Famicom game, so it's clear that they don't have much interest in modernizing it. I guess they see Gaiden's fundamental identity as being "the weird one."

Certainly sounds weird.

Wonder if Nintendo is trying to aim this at the hardcore FE player base, people who have been playing the games longer than the new Awakening/Fates crowd?

Seems significantly more likely that it's to see how the newer crowd reacts to these elements that haven't been seen since gaiden given that their preferences are less quantified. They know what the old crowd thinks of that game that's why they remade 1 and 3 on DS but not 2.

Nintendo of America is producing a Limited Edition version which contains the game, an artbook, soundtrack CD and some pins for $59.99.

Up on GameStop and Amazon.com so far.

Managed to get a pre-order for the limited edition at Amazon. I don't know if I'm gonna keep it (depends on employment), but it's somewhat satisfying to actually secure one for once.

you'd think after the DS remakes nearly killed the franchise they would have learned their lesson about this and yet

(though in Echoes SoV's defense it actually has a nice presentation rather than going ass ugly like the DS games)

I enjoyed the OG so I'm super excited for this. From what we saw in the trailers there are some shifts in the individual level design, which is nice, and I love the high terrain effects.

Soooo hyped.

Yeah, we'll have to see if this remake is just as soulless as the first one. If it is, sad! I'd like to see more remakes in the future, especially because they expose me to non-localized games. But at least Fire Emblem will still exist.

Hearing all the details about this remake is mainly just making me realize how little I know about this game!

Since I haven't beaten Breath of the Wild yet, just started Andromeda, am planning on borrowing Horizon Zero Dawn from a friend and want to play I am Setsuna I think this one is going to wait. Bad timing!

There is a LP of Gaiden on the LP Archive if you're curious. It looks like they're not changing much mechanically game-wise, so if you want to know a bit of how it's going to play reading the first few posts of that should help.

John Ricciardi confirmed on Twitter that 8-4 is handling localization duties on this one.

I really love these designs! Do I spy some silhouettes for Marth, Lucina, and Robin in there?

Answer: Yes, you do; if you have their amiibo you can add them to your team. That includes Ike as well. Corrin will be there too, whenever that amiibo is released.

Obviously no one has any hands-on experience with the game yet, but is this going to have any of the elements of the more recent FE games, other than the gentler difficulty curve, or is it going to go the Shadow Dragon route of being exactly like the original just with different graphics?

In other words; are there Team Ups and Smooches?

This is mostly going to be a slightly updated version of the original outside visuals, so no team ups or smooches. Also, it's been a while since I've seen literal boob plates.

The character art looks lovely. I got bored halfway through my fifth Fates playthrough so I've been playing Sacred Stones in the meantime. I imagine I'll be done with it by the time this comes out.

Yeah (literal plate boobs aside...), the art is nice. The palette helps convey that this is an "old" game without it feeling dull and lifeless like Shadow Dragon.

It's still weird, but the weirdness has been modernized. There is no pair up, but there are support conversations, which take place on the battlefield GBA style.

About three weeks or so.

Kind of surprised it's not up for preorder yet, tbh.

Oh, shoot, I confused the Japanese release date for the American one. That's disappointing!

This is out. Impressions:
  • They finally made one with better animations than the GBA games
  • The completely different inventory system and the emphasis on smaller skirmishes and dungeons almost gives it a feel of being more like an RPG than a strategy game
  • The combination of unlimited supports, few eligible pairs, and no support rank S means that you can finally just enjoy support conversations without stressing about them, a model I hope they carry forward
  • I forgot this game was fully voice-acted
  • Damn that's some good character design happening here
  • It's also cool that everybody has terrible growth rates, honestly

Prior to Awakening, all characters could only have up to five support conversations -- an A and a B, or two Bs and a C. Awakening and Fates dispensed with this but also added the one-per-character S-rank conversations and incentivized pairing for children.

Ah, I see! Thanks.

It looks like there aren't any stat boosts applied to supports anymore either. Is that right? Because if it is then it really is stress free, and beautiful!

I'm befuddled by all the "The waifus are gone, Fire Emblem is good again" conversation surrounding Echoes. Shipping is good! Give me back my shipping!

Ok, that's not entirely true, I can sorta understand the blowback since a lot of the marriage supports from Fates were pretty awful, and the children were shoehorned for no good reason. I'm pretty sure marriage will be back in full force for FE Switch, so let's just hope they hire better writers this time around (preferably ones that don't hate gay people).

As for Echoes, most of the reviews (even the ones that are generally positive) are making the game sound like a huge slog. I'll be skipping this one, I think.

I never want to see them have children again unless it's actually generational like Genealogy of the Holy War. Awakening's explanation for concurrent adult children was pretty cool, but Fates' was so bad.
