Default DC Comics is bad at their job

Background:
I refer you to this page of Shortpacked

This has been generally true since before it was written and ever since. The latest victim is Batman Beyond, but there'll be more.

Seriously. Nobody at DC Comics outside the animation division seems to know what the fucking hell they're doing. This is why Marvel has consistently beaten their asses into the dirt in the 21st century, over and over again.

(Actually, at the time of this posting, the cartoonist of Cucumber Quest is busy tweeting about how good Batman the Animated Series is compared to her expectations, which were informed by literally everything except the animation division)

I'm so mad about comic books right now

Well, yeah. Don't read DC comics. I've tried many times and they're all absolutely terrible. The worst kind of grimdark, violent excess, misogyny and the great cultural lie that Batman is cool.

Well. You're not wrong. Despite the fact, I am enjoying a few DC Comics.

I'd also argue that even the animation division doesn't know what it's doing. Beware the Batman and Green Lantern The Animated Series were wonderful shows cut down before their prime for stupid, short sighted reasons.

Also, re: that short packed comic - I actually liked Red Hood & The Outlaws despite its characterization of Starfire. It was one of the few DC N52 comics that didn't take itself too seriously and was primarily focused on having fun rather than being grimdark.

Trick is to find the exceptions. Which isn't as hard as you might think.

I also liked Red Son, a bit, and the brief bit of New 52 Flash I read. Oh, and Hellblazer.

But Marvel is totally cool, I guess? Why single out DC?

If you're addressing me it's because I like Marvel comics, which I find entertaining, unlike DC comics which are ugly in every sense of the word. I hope this helps

In the interests of being reasonable I will say that it's just their comics I tend to dislike, their cartoons and stuff are usually pretty great

I agree, and it's why I started this thread.

It's hyperbole to say that DC is uniformly terrible - there are totally bright spots in their output! many of which have been mentioned in this very thread! - but yeah, compared to Marvel I find them overly infatuated with confusing "maturity" for "grimdark 'n boobs", and their neverending visits to the continuity reset well aren't wearing well. When I look at the past 5 years or so in comics, Marvel just seems more with it and more in tune with who they are as a publisher, and DC seems more try-hard and all over the place.

I can't remember remember where I read it, but as I understand it, a lot of DC's sucky editorial mandates come from on high. Warner Brothers just wants them to keep churning out books to hang on to the media properties.

You're right- DC is bad- but like, who cares? Why is everyone so attached to reading Marvel and DC and other superhero shit? There's sooooo many other comics out there but nobody can look away from these consistently terrible ones for some reason.

Because superhero comics are, at their best, hella fun

Like, yes, there's a rich variety of comics genres out there that people can enjoy, and I'd encourage people to do so. My favorite comics ever aren't superhero comics.

But there's nothing wrong with liking superhero comics or wanting them to be better. And many of us grew up with Big Two superheroes. We're emotionally attached. We want them to be awesome. When they're not, it makes us sad.

Realtalk: What are the good DC comics? And "good" by my standards means fun and not excessively mired in continuity. I enjoyed Court of Owls but the conclusion and reveal were like "who?" for me.

I've read All-Star Superman, I've enjoyed some Flash, I liked Red Son, I like the silly Harley/Ivy comics Bruce Timm did, I like a bit of Hellblazer. I'll read literally anything I'm recommended.

Last time I asked this on the internet I was told to jump in with Blackest Night.

No fucking clue.

I've only had the smallest sampling of DC myself, but Kingdom Come is really good, and features gorgeous Alex Ross art.
