Oh man, Francesca. The AV Club linked to this scene from Breaking Bad, which I'd completely forgotten about:

I'm so not used to seeing Walt anymore, it's like he's from another planet.

I was pretty into it. It again hit that sweet spot where I figured out the plan just before the execution. Loved the hunting detail; Mike thinks of everything. Also, it helped validate this week's opening, where I initially thought that the sneakers were over-the-top wankery. I should have had faith.

After that Cold Open, I was seriously expecting the Breaking Bad theme song to play instead of the Better Call Saul one.

That cliffhanger was nuts. I wish the next episode was on already.

I just realized Esposito is actually a main cast member this season. Looking forward to more pre-Heisenberg Cartel shenanigans in addition to pre-Goodman lawyer fighting.

I was surprised for a second that Gus's staff bought his story wholesale, but then I remembered how Gus Fring would come off to people who have not experienced the entirety of Breaking Bad.

It didn't really seem like a cliffhanger to me. I mean, don't get me wrong, I want the next episode right now, hook it to my veins, but it just seemed like a normal episode ending. Jimmy and Kim clearly have a plan, and I look forward to seeing what it is!

As to what that plan is, Johnny and I both have theories. I've been thinking since last week that Jimmy's going to go for the nuclear option and try and have his brother committed, or at least judged unfit to serve by the bar, and Mike's photos certainly feed right into that (how great was that scene, by the way?) Johnny remarked as soon as the episode was over that Kim probably got what Chuck just said about wanting Jimmy to break in on tape, which makes Chuck's statement about "that tape will be played for the bar" very funny.

Yeah, I think the scene at the fire station was meant to drive that home and remind us how the rest of the world sees Gus Fring.

Which makes me worried that poor Lyle might end up calling the cops after all if Hector shows up again out of concern for his boss, which wouldn't end well for him.

This might be over-reading a little, but I like how Jimmy's throwaway joke about how Mike should pay more attention to the "rule of thirds" in his surveillance photographs is immediately followed by a shot that demonstrates the rule:

Imagine the shot divided like a tic-tac-toe board. Jimmy and Mike align roughly (though not perfectly) with the vertical axes, and the bottom of the awning and top of the windowsill with the horizontal axes. BrBa and BCS are really beautifully, carefully shot in general, so it's hard to imagine a shot in either show that doesn't adhere to the rule, but this is a pretty explicit, textbook example.

Also yet another sign that Jimmy is a movie nerd (like his references to Network and All That Jazz from S1), a neat detail for someone who goes on to become a legal showman and huckster.

Holy shit, I've been hoping all season this would end with Jimmy pulling a Caine Mutiny on Chuck but I didn't think they would actually, literally shoot an homage to the climax of The Caine Mutiny!!!

(for reference)

I've enjoyed the Mike/Gus side of things a bit more than the Jimmy side this season, but what a stellar episode.

As soon as the vet asked "Does he need to fit into any tight spaces?", Johnny and I looked at each other and squeed.

Yep. I wasn't even 100% sure it would come to this since early on Vince Gilligan said he loved the idea of a lawyer show where we never get inside of a court room. Come to think of it, its only happened twice (with out main character anyway) across 2 and a half seasons (the first being the second scene in the first episode).

Not as much to unpack from this week, I think, but there are lots of plots moving forward.

The episode very much felt like it was setting up a transition, or something like that.

I would have enjoyed the official debut of the Saul name more if the AV Club hadn't put it as their top fucking headline. They've done that several times this season.

No idea where this season is gonna end. The commercial had me laughing as soon as Jimmy mentioned the guy pointing out the star wipes. I did the exact same thing when I saw it. I didn't really care about seeing Lydia again, but whatever.

That commercial felt totally Mr. Show to me and reminded me of this gem.

I knew "Saul" would show up but I didn't know the context, so it was still a great reveal. It was a really fun moment and I'm looking forward to the continued development of the "character".

The final scene is the cruelest, most vindictive we've seen Jimmy. He's breaking bad in his own way.

Yeah, Jimmy is getting downright ugly. Both physically (Odenkirk manages to make himself look downright awful in the bar scene) and spiritually. I like that he's so frustrated with the way things are going that he's just kicking his brother while he's down just because. Everyone is talking about putting things behind them but can any of them. I'm wondering if that is why Chuck is trying to do. Its hard to imagine him not trying to go after Jimmy again and that could be what he's attempting next,
but I could also see it as Chuck trying to figure out his psychosomatic disorder and while he's trying to actually get better without antagonizing anyone, Jimmy just keeps kicking at that hornet's nest.

I also bet that Jimmy will rationalize this shitty action later with "Well, he has all that money he can get from HHM, so who cares if I cost him money."

Considering that the next three episodes are titled "Slip", "Fall"
and "Lantern", I wouldn't be surprised if by the end of this season, Jimmy drives Chuck to an insane asylum due to his constant provocation.
Part of that will also probably involved HHM deciding to just become Hamlin & Hamlin.

I don't care if it was overly jerky, Jimmy lawyering the community service guy into submission was incredibly cathartic.

I also like that apparently Chuck is actually trying to forget Jimmy in favor of focusing on recovery, even if he is making assumptions that just because it is psychosomatic that his recovery should happen real soon.
And it is quite touching to see him realize that his condition being fake meant that he might have lost a lot for nothing.

Of course, its just when Chuck is forgetting Jimmy (or at least putting him on the back burner) is when Jimmy decides to poke the bear.

That scene actually didn't really work for me. I just wasn't buying it, for some reason. Seemed like Jimmy's argument wasn't that convincing, and that the guy gave in too easily.
