Here you go, with numbers and charts! (mostly charts because NDAs)

Note that Steam has significantly changed how they do Visibility Rounds since that was written -- they're much worse now.

Also, that's written from the point of view of a developer whose game has been on Steam for a long time. This is just a guess, but Discovery probably works better on games where Steam has established data patterns. On the other hand, this is also a developer who pays an unusual amount of attention to the business end of Steam. Like, he was going to pay me out-of-pocket to create SteamSpy, but then someone else did it and saved us both the trouble.

Speaking of which, SteamSpy and SteamDB are excellent resources for anyone who intends to educate themselves on actual numbers here. Don't just trust anecdotal evidence -- that includes Lars as well as any other developers you might speak to.

OK, thanks Mogri. That's the thread that I thought I had read.

SteamSpy is nice, but it doesn't show too much info (I think only a month's worth of data is visible for each game). Don't use SteamDB much - I'll have to check it out.

SteamSpy is geared towards estimating sales numbers, where SteamDB is more general. I haven't used it much, but it has a really cool history function that lets you see every little change to a game's metadata -- every time they've changed their release date, description, tags, and so forth.

If you're interested in the business end of gamedev, Lars and I have been working on a project in our spare time. Right now, he's organizing it by hand with open signups, but I'm working on getting the whole thing automated. You should be able to play it on the website within a month or two.

A friendly reminder: the first hours of the sale are always a mess as Steam's servers crumble under the weight of the increased traffic, so maaaybe you want to wait a few hours before you start throwing money at Gabe's wallet.

(also, make sure to price match Steam with Humble Store, as Humble also gives you a Steam key plus gives more money to the developer, plus a portion of your sale goes to charity - this tip also applies after the summer sale )

Looks like my wallet might be getting off lightly - somehow only a handful of items from my mammoth wishlist are on sale, and I'm not particularly bothered about any of them. Phew!

Give it a moment. It can take a while for the price updates to propagate.

Updates are starting to trickle in to steamdb.info (I can't access Steam at work). < $5 for This War of Mine is a steal. I highly recommend it!

Apparently this year's steam sale rewards stickers for doing stuff like checking your store preferences? Okay then.

Dead Cells is just barely on sale, but right now any excuse is enough to push me over the edge for that game. I'll probably get it in a couple of days, I still have a few levels left to play in Specter of Torment.

Nier Automata is 30% off and I don't quite know what to do about that. I want to play it, but it's still $56CDN, which is above my impulse buy threshold.

Dark Souls III is (I think) 66% off, which is also tempting. But do I really have time to get into that with all the other stuff that I want to play coming soon?

Worked the other way around, too. I saw Her Story go off sale in real time.

Shantae 1/2 is finally getting a discount! I Am Setsuna's still too expensive and looks like Lost Sphear is a better attempt, so I'm still skipping it.

Atari Vault is like $4. I may also pick up the last few Genesis Classics games I don't yet have.

Probably just more overburdened server weirdness. It's on sale again, hopefully for good.

I suppose that it is not surprising that PUBG is not on sale, but I still wanted it to be.

Though Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIII is 60% off...

I guess what I'm saying is my taste in games varies wildly.

I wanted it to be too, so that more people around here would start playing PUBG.

I've seen contradictory accounts - does Atari Vault include Swordquest: Fireworld or not?

I'm not sure how much I'll be participating this year, but am certainly willing to trade off any stickers that might show up in the ol' inventory. I'll post updates in the thread.

I thought that this was a remake of the Pharaoh city-building sim from about 20 years ago, but apparently it's something entirely different! Although it does look like that sim is available on Steam, along with its companion Cleopatra.

I did too when I first saw it a while back. But yeah, it's a semi-Metroidvania from the same guy that did Return of Egypt back in the day. And I'm a sucker for stuff like that.

It's very tempting, but the ones that are still around £20 are all making me think "But that's potentially a handful of other games..."

Well, I escaped alive, somehow.
  • OneShot
  • Stories Untold
  • Screencheat
  • Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky
  • Ara Fell
  • Resident Evil 4
  • Lara Croft GO
  • Cosmic Star Heroine
  • Dawn of War II
  • Elminage Gothic
  • Solitairica
  • Kona
  • 80 Days
$86.27 CDN total.

None of my big ticket items were cheap enough that I took the plunge (I'm looking at you, RE7, Numenera, Civ VI, Witcher 3, and Prey), so I just contended myself with a bunch of cheap stuff from my wishlist. I snapped up pretty much everything on there that was < $5.
