Default "The Steam Valve! Release the Steam Valve!" Steam Thread of General Steaminess.

This is a thread for talking about Steamy things. In my case, it's to ask about how Steam functions and how to use it.

Other questions include:

*Where do I get Steam?

*Does Steam work well with Mac?

*How much computer knowledge do I have to have to successfully install and then manage Steam, because I have very little!

*Is Steam safe? Will it give me viruses, malware, worms, etc.

*Do I need to buy and install Lion first? I really don't want to!

Depending on how this goes, there will be may more questions.

Here!

Yes, but keep in mind that only certain games are available on OSX.

Little to none! It basically does everything for you.

I've never heard of anyone ever having a problem with an exploit via Steam. I'd say you're good to go.

I have Steam on my Snow Leopard laptop. It works fine. But again, look at the individual games and make sure your computer meets the requirements!

Bigman, Steam is so well-made and maintained that you'll wonder how you ever managed without it. I run fucking Minesweeper through Steam. Also, it's my preferred chat client.

Also, Steam just changed things so that you can specify where to install things now.

Don't we already have a STEAM thread?

Also, how do you get to the year 2012 and not know anything about Steam?

I mean, it might be good for most of us, but how do you know if its a fit for you? I suggest looking into Origin and UPlay beforehand. Avoid GOG, though. For some reason they don't believe in DRM.

Worse, it'll sometimes give you three updates in a week.

Surprisingly, no! I checked. We have threads on specific Steam things (Greenlight, Big Picture, how much have I spent on things) but not on the service in general.

Steam is now available for Linux. Well in beta anyway. Now my life is (a little bit more) complete.

Hot damn! That's just what I wanted for Christmas! Well, Christmas 2013, maybe. We obviously know next to nothing about this thing, but here's my wish list for it:

- Not crazy expensive (under $500)
- At least as 3D capable as my current PC (shouldn't be hard)
- Available by the end of next year (???)
- Somehow compatible with wireless 360 controllers, at least via the USB dongle that I have for my PC (that might be a long shot)

If this turns out to be something really cool, then I will almost certainly buy one. I'm not very excited about the possibility of a next-gen Xbox of PlayStation right now, so this could very well be my next "console" purchase. I look forward to learning more about this...but if we're running on Valve Time, that might not happen any time soon.

EDIT: I forgot to add "small and quiet" to my list of criteria, and those are both very important. They're why I don't have my current computer set up in the living room, actually.

If it's compatible with all the Steam games I currently have, then I'll definitely buy it. I'd probably even forego the 720 and PS4 in favor of it.

That really comes down to whether it is Linux-based (which seems likely), in which case no, it wouldnt run your old games unless/until the developers update to include a Linux port.

I'm super-excited about the prospect, though (Steam + Big Picture + Linux becoming the "fourth console" was on my 2013 wish/prediction list, after all). If Valve can pull this off in a way where they stay true to their ideals (rather than becoming yet another walled garden), it could be just the kind of disruptive change the gaming hardware world needs.

Now we just need Steam for Android and a Valve-backed gaming phone to take on the handhelds.

Why would I want a console by Valve when I already have a PC with Steam?

Pretty much this, yeah. The key word in the whole thing is "turnkey."

Making the point by analogy:

I've had people argue to me that there is no reason to buy, say, an Apple TV to watch Netflix, etc. on your TV when you can just build a home theater PC that does even more. The thing is, an Apple TV is a turnkey device that basically Just Works, while a HTPC is more a hobby than an appliance.

I'm in the closed beta, and... well, there are several reasons it's in closed beta. Don't expect a Windows-quality gaming experience for a while yet, triply so if you're not running the preferred distro.

TF2 runs awfully nice, though.

I'll probably be in the market for a new PC within the next year or so, so I'll definitely keep my eye on it. It'll be interesting to see who this ends up being for, and if it will get into living rooms the same way consoles have.

I think Valve is smart, though, in that they recognize whatever this hardware ends up being is only one of several options people will be hooking up to the TV, and thus will push to make Steam a de facto install on all of them. That, right there, will probably be the key to success.

p.s. I really hope they use the name "Steam Box". I think that sounds rad.

Unless you've got an ATI card 4+ years old, which those asshats EOL'd with respect to Linux drivers right before releasing an update required to make TF2 run at all (and which breaks several other games if you do install it).

I don't say this enough: I am never buying another AMD card again.
